There is more to stereo sound than speaker separation. If whatever you are listening too especially music/movies/etc were recorded with a stereo track a lot of fidelity will be lost when reproducing via mono speaker.
Sure not a twelve foot separation. But I can sure hear difference between stereo iPad and older one. You ears must be blown out.

Of course if they are close and not deaf. Just like I can hear them talking on phone or into ear plugs as they loudly yap at person on other end of line. What's your point?

That playing your music via your iPhone's speakers with people around you, is selfish and anti social.

Course everyone walking around staring down at their phones for any number of selfish reasons is promoting our social skills and making us a more caring society. It used to be, people talking to themselves were considered not right in the head. Now a days they are talking over their blue tooth head set or yelling into their phone socially allowing me into their side of the conversation.

You could take it that I am a sharing and caring person allowing others to experience the joy of my wonderful music selection. In matter of fact, I have had more people mention they like a tune rather than object. Go figure.

Besides it's all Apples's fault, the proximity sensor should shut down the speaker anytime it senses others in my proximity.o_O

What are you talking about? Try rereading my post...I feel like your profile pic.

The nicely positioned second set of holes on the bottom of the Ip 7 LOOK like there is an additional speaker there and all the promo stuff says, "stereo speakers", but I suspect that there is still just one speaker in the bottom, in the original location and they use the top earphone speaker as the second one. I have an HTC 10, and it has a similar setup however the top speaker is only in use during media playback, not phone calls. I am wondering if the Iphone has the same setup? And why did they put the holes there? Cooling? Or symmetry?

There was renders/technical drawings where one set of 'speaker' holes weren't actually holes at all, just done for symmetry. It's been confirmed the second stereo speaker is in the earpiece recess at the top of the phone.

You are correct, one speaker where it used to be and one up top. The other holes improve the mic pickup apparently as well as being symmetrical.

im wondering if noth speakers are functional on the bottom. Or is the one where the headphone jack was not "working" and just cosmetic.

No, the iPhone 7 uses the bottom speaker on the right and the earpiece speaker on the top to give you a stereo effect. I think the speaker holes on the left of the device are there for esthetic purposes. The holes are most likely not drilled all the way through.

And the rest of us probably understand that they're there for the microphone.

According to Apple's own graphic, only one of the left-side holes is the microphone, with no mention of what the other holes are for.

Yes, one of the holes would contain the microphone. It could possibly be on the right side together with the speaker to simply design for the water resistance. We won't know until the phones are released.
