I'm treating the water resistance as insurance against accidental water, rather than going swimming with the thing.
IE, if I get caught in the rain I don't have to be as careful. If it falls into the pool on accident it'll probably be fine.
When water dries it leaves whatever was dissolved in it behind. This means your speaker, mic, lightning port will all start to accumulate crap that's difficult to clean. It's not worth it, folks. Treat it as insurance against accidental water damage and don't ruin your phones.
