Great sound will come from the bitrate first.

one of their acquisitions from 2013 I think was a company dealing with digital compression, so I would only assume that the fruits from that would finally appear? I know there have been rumours of lossless files on iTunes for some time now, so I guess they're just fine-tuning the hardware to give the files at least some kind of a bump for the average consumer to feel the difference in compression type.

Apple's sound chip won't be better then samsung's galaxy S + voodoo. (yes the original). Before throwing out the word revolutionary, let's see if apple can at least try to beat the competition.

I could see Apple pitching the loss of the headphone jack in this manner. If they could do speakers like the iPad pro it would make sense as to why the jack had to go (and to some extent would be welcomed moreso by me at least). I could see them marking it up as some sort of mobile Audio revolution at the keynote. My concerns with them developing their own wireless solution over bluetooth is we'll be stuck buying Apple/Beats branded headphones to use with our phones. At the very least they should design it where bluetooth OR the new Apple wireless tech can be used by Apple's headphones and allow the tech to be reasonably implemented by third party manufacturers. This way old bluetooth headphones will still work until eventually you can upgrade to some that implement Apples better wireless too. Either way, I think they should sell the lightning port as the secondary solution that's reserved mainly for audiophiles. Provide an adapter that can go on the end of their expensive headphones and be relatively out of the way.

Slightly off topic, but I wonder if we would see bluetooth EarPods that can be quick charged via the lightning port in the same manner the Apple Pencil can be in the iPad's lightning port. That may alleviate some of the concerns of battery life.

Apple's own crap never took off and will never work. Fireware, thunderbolt, even lighting, none of them replaced open standard. Even Apple's own lossless audio format ever really replace nor better than other lossless formate.

As other points out, 3.5mm jack is not the limit factor of sound quality. So simply committing 3.5mm isn't going to do anything about sounf quality department. Before Apple talk about how revolutionize audio department, Apple should try to beat the competition.
