I'm also a 6 to 8. Skipped the 7 to wait on the 8, I guess you might wonder why not the 7 if it's cheaper. Well cheaper is loss in value sooner than the 8 IMO.

I know this is crazy, but the reason for upgrading from 7 to 8 seems to be able to use it without a case finally. It will not slip out of your hand all the time like lighter, aluminium backed iP7 does. For me, thats an upgrade over the 7. But only if I can sell my iP7 for a good price of course.

The iPhone 8 got an entirely new design, because I do not need a case anymore.
Gruber does say the 8 is less slippery than the 7.

without even reading the review, that was my reasoning. Its a very minor update to the 7. I'm not knocking the 8, just pointing out though apple really didn't add anything compelling to the 8 (other then wireless charging).

Agreed. People are going to spend so much $ getting a new iPhone this year if they own last year's models. It's sad because as good as the X can be, it is still so overpriced that you might need to go elsewhere or stand pat to avoid denting your wallet.

Have 6S+.
Going back to SE for 6 months as experiment.
Need to spend less time on my phone and when I need to do things with a larger screen I have an IPP and MBP.
SE has the camera I need in a phone.

Anyone who knows me knows I am ALL about some iPhone tech.. I fought my way onto the device team at ATT when the iPhone launched..

WTS... combine my need to back off tech and these minimal updates and phones over $1K now.. I need to check myself .. logic is going out the window IMO.

Ok but people need to stop with the “this isn’t a compelling upgrade from the 7”. I doubt Apple is expecting most 7 users to upgrade to the 8.

Ok, but I didn't suggest that and secondly... upgrading to the 8 from a 7 is still a valid option.. and the validity of that something that is best discovered via a review... which is why this review is required, which is where I originally disagreed with you and started this convo :)

I think part of the problem here is that going from a 6 to a 7 was actually a step of two generations, two years. There was a 6S in between. So many people probably did see the 6 to 7 as a default upgrade, especially given how common two-year contracts are.

Apple has chosen to call the new phone 8 rather than 7S, probably because it has a new chassis. By that logic the 7 should really have been the 6S&S - it was more like a second increment over the 6S with no new chassis.

Anyhow, Apple is inviting these comparisons and unreasonable expectations due to it's naming choices.

Also, it's important to remember that the "7" wasn't really fully available/refined until earlier this year. By that I mean you couldn't really get a Jet Black iPhone 7 with Airpods and full Portait mode until recently. Now, in September, you could get that package for a decent price.

Read the review and I see nothing wrong with it.

I'm leery of the ip8 battery life (compared to the ip7)..it wouldn't surprise me if the real world usage...the ip8 turns out to be not as good w/the battery.

There's really no compelling reason to buy the ip8 if you always own a ip7.

As said before, Apple should have called this...the ip7s.

I doubt Apple is expecting most 7 users to upgrade to the 8.

And what makes you say that? Apple is counting on a strong showing from the ip8.

As for "why upgrade if you have a ip7"...
I'd also say the same thing, "Why do it?"

Save your money.

I'm staying with my 6s another year. I have the headphone jack and I can charge the phone and listen to music (using the 3.5mm jack) at the same time.

I don't want or need BT earphones...it's just another thing I have to charge and who needs that?

If you ask me...the ip6s/+ is still Apple's best phone to date. Only weakness is the battery life if you have a Samsung CPU. (Sadly, I do.)

Verge scored it 8 out of 10

His final thoughts

After spending a week with the 8, I can’t think of a single compelling reason to upgrade from an iPhone 7. The 7 is still extremely fast, offers virtually the same design in a lighter package with a bigger battery, and will get almost every feature of the 8 with iOS 11. If you really want Qi wireless charging, you can get a slim $15 case that supports it. And if you’re dying for Portrait Lighting, there are tons of photo apps in the App Store that offer similar effects. Of course, if you're upgrading from anything older than an iPhone 7, the improvements in the camera and the overall speed of the phone are going to really impress you.

Performance wise the reviewer didn't see a big difference from the iphone 7

ARKit? Face Tracking? Animoji's? iPhone 8 will never have that. Sounds like the reviewer had a bias.

And that's exactly what I'm doing. Going from a dying, three year old 6 Plus to an 8. Should be a big upgrade all around.

iPhone 8 will have ARKit. All iOS devices with A9 and up will have it.

As a 6s+ owner, I'm upgrading to the iPhone 8+ because it only cost me $119 to do so with the Apple Upgrade Plan. I'm looking forward to the additional camera, wireless charging, glass back (going to go caseless if I can!), and .... yeah that's bout it. If it had cost more out of pocket, I definitely would have kept my 6s+.

Monthly payments on my 6s+ with the Apple Upgrade Plan are $44.xx and the 8+ will be $45.xx (close to $46).

The 8 will run ARKit apps just as well as the X. From what we know so far, the "animoji" front camera (vs. Touch ID) is the only functional difference between the 8 and the X.

Yeah... I've got the 6s Plus with a ear speaker that is starting to act up... glad I passed on the 7 last year. For 6 owners the upgrade makes a lot more sense IMO. My 8 Plus is on the way...

I got a $300 Verizon trade credit for mine... and payments are $40 a month 0% APR.

Wow, just 1:30 into the video and the reviewer has made so many excuses on the review as to why this isn't the X, and how the X is the future (I'm not saying its not). It's like he's begrudgingly doing the interview but doesn't really see the need
This is why consumers' review have more credibility over these 4K editing brand tech reviewers.

Bluetooth 5, better speakers, better camera and now I get wireless charging without having to get a qi case and can still use my wallet case. And I get a new phone every year so it's good for me!
