Correct me if I am wrong, in portrait mode the iphone 8 is narrower than iphone 7+ ?

It will be a big disappointment.. wider is better than taller imho. I think many uses the phone upright.. having to drag around to see to the left or right is a turn off :(

Yeah, this is one of the things that I'm not liking about "bezel-less" phones in general. They promise the biggest screen in the smallest footprint, but a lot are achieving that by making the display taller but not wider, since side bezels have always been pretty small, so the extra screen size comes almost entirely from adding to the top and bottom.

It's hard to tell based on "leaked" models online, but it doesn't look like the display on the "8" is actually much wider in portrait than the regular 6/6s/7, certainly not as wide as the Plus models.

It's difficult to say How I am going to feel about that. As this is a new design and I have not held an phone that will be similar to more of all narrower/longer chassis. But like anything, I suspect I will adjust to it.

There will not be a taller phone. They'll just reduce the bezels from top and bottom of a plus size phone. So the screen size will be similar to the plus phone without the bezels.

This year there will be only one iPhone 8, so it has to appeal to people who like the 7 and the 7 Plus model. They can boast that they've fit a bigger than 7 Plus screen in almost the 7's body. If it would've been as wide or wider than the 7 Plus, the phone would also be that size and the 7 Plus is just too big for many people. This is a good in-between option that will appeal to the masses. Next year there will probably be a regular and plus version of this new iPhone to restore the balance.

But it will be narrower, which is the OP's point. There's not much bezel at the sides to remove.
@Applegeeky Here is a picture showing iPhone 8 Display compared to iPhone 7S Plus.

It will be taller but less wider than iPhone 7S Plus display.

This is the comparison between the 7, 8 and 7 Plus:

So the screen will be narrower but taller than the 7 Plus. For Plus users the screen will probably feel smaller even though in theory it isn't.

Got this image from everythingapplepro video

How authentic is this source?

@Sunny1990. In fairness to Akash.nu's question, "EverythingApplePro" is not a source. He is an internet blogger that makes YouTube videos for clicks. More so, he actually is more someone that reviews and tests products, but nonetheless, he is definitely not an inside source at all.

Ming Kuo would be an example of a legitimate source based off accuracy with past predictions.

EverythingApplePro got it from Steve T-S on Twitter, who might not be a source, but is someone who has found a lot of proof in actual code. Other than that, the dimensions of the new iPhone are known for a while now and it will be 4mm wider than the regular 7. The bezel on the sides will be exactly the same as on the 7 and 7 Plus, so this means that the screen will be 4mm wider than the regular iPhone 7 and almost 7mm narrower than the 7 Plus.

yeah.. this may be a deal breaker for me .. narrower is like a step back .. weird Apple ...just like how they refused to come out with the bigger size phones for years .. I wonder if they r connected with what consumers really want.

Did you know it has scientifically been proven that consumers actually don't know what they want, and also have no clue about engineering and user experience related issues. They just say whatever they feel like.

The biggest example is Samsung. Look at their sales figures and look at Apple sales figures. Listening to consumers is not a good idea at all.

Believe it or not, this has been my personal experience with our development experience as well. People come up with things that just don't make any sense in a focus group. You end up literally telling them what you want to develop and then all of a sudden everyone / the majority thinks it's a good idea. I've had personal experience with such focus groups.

Noted.. but come on. Don't tell me that the narrow screen doesn't bite? Surfing the web will be a torture ..

Apps in landscape will look bad, but most of the time we use the iPhone in portrait so it shouldn't be a big concern.
But even in portrait there will be more room for vertical content, which is great for table views when you have a list of stuff, but not for watching content in detail.
That's one of the reasons why I may go for the 7s+ this year and hopefully the same form factor next year without bezels, it should be wide enough to provide a good user experience.

Lol, torture is pushing it a bit, no?

I get it, and honestly I think long term this new OLED iPhone for 2017 is more a replacement for the 4.7" iPhone, and next year we'll see the ~6.5" OLED iPhone which will likely be more of a replacement for the Plus.

I don't think they're necessarily trying to replace the Plus with a more narrow screen, rather that they're taking existing bezel and turning that into additional screen, which happens to result in a taller screen. Seems that most manufacturers who are going to bezel less screens are ending up with these ~2:1 screen ratios.

I'm familiar with Steve T-S. Makes sense EverythingApplePro pulled the size variants from someone else. But yes, I agree the dimensions have been discussed and well known while now. At least in terms of what we have seen from renders for the past few months.

This is what I'm worried about after owning a 6 Plus and a 7 Plus. I've adjusted to holding a wider phone. I feel like for typing this will be an issue. I have friends and family with the 4.7" iPhone and my fingers feel cramped typing on the smaller screen. I really like the bezel free look of the 8 and I even like the look of the top notch, but I wish they were making an 8 Plus as well.

I totally get what you are saying. I have a 7 Plus, 6S and 5S and once you get used to the Plus size it feels very limiting working with a smaller screen. However, you do get used to it after a couple of hours.
Next year I'm fairly certain they will have a "bezel-less" Plus model, but this year it's probably still too difficult to produce in large quantities.

This image was ahead of its time...not keen on this trend for phones to be ever taller and more narrow..

Hopefully there is an 8 Plus that has been kept a secret and will be the one more thing announcement.

But the iPhone 8 will not be more narrow or taller. The aspect ratio of the phone body stays the same as all current iPhones, only the screen becomes taller because the top and bottom bezels are removed. It has nothing to do with what happened during the transition from the 4S to the 5 where the screen was made taller while the top and bottom bezels practically kept the same size.
