I think this is going to be the archetype for the new regular sized iPhone, and there will be a bigger version to join it eventually, aimed at upgrading plus users. That's why it's approx the same footprint as the 6/S/7 - much like the 10.5" iPad Pro replacing the 9.7 in a similar sized package.

Lol, torture is pushing it a bit, no?

I get it, and honestly I think long term this new OLED iPhone for 2017 is more a replacement for the 4.7" iPhone, and next year we'll see the ~6.5" OLED iPhone which will likely be more of a replacement for the Plus.

I don't think they're necessarily trying to replace the Plus with a more narrow screen, rather that they're taking existing bezel and turning that into additional screen, which happens to result in a taller screen. Seems that most manufacturers who are going to bezel less screens are ending up with these ~2:1 screen ratios.

Never thought of that .. ok patience.. must resist .. wait for next year! Haha

Yeah, this is one of the things that I'm not liking about "bezel-less" phones in general. They promise the biggest screen in the smallest footprint, but a lot are achieving that by making the display taller but not wider, since side bezels have always been pretty small, so the extra screen size comes almost entirely from adding to the top and bottom.

It's hard to tell based on "leaked" models online, but it doesn't look like the display on the "8" is actually much wider in portrait than the regular 6/6s/7, certainly not as wide as the Plus models.

Yeap, tried a One Plus 5 lately, a wider screen, 5.5" just like the iPhone Plus but with zero side bezels, and smaller China but still chins and it felt great.

It should be 4mm wider according to leaked schematics.

The 7+, while a solid phone, is a two handed phone. As time has gone on I've gone away from that and prefer the smaller phones that can be used with one hand. I think that Apple is going for that with the 8. A smaller footprint with the intention of one handed use. It's not a downgrade, it's just different.

Also, I'm hearing that a 6.45 screen plus model is coming next year anyway.

I totally get what you are saying. I have a 7 Plus, 6S and 5S and once you get used to the Plus size it feels very limiting working with a smaller screen. However, you do get used to it after a couple of hours.
Next year I'm fairly certain they will have a "bezel-less" Plus model, but this year it's probably still too difficult to produce in large quantities.

Doesn't Samsung already have a 7+ sized oled phone?

I just want to be able to comfortably operate the phone with one hand. Doesn't really matter to me if its thinner.

Yeah they have two that are about 7+ sized.

Even their smallest phone is 5.7" now but that more competes with the small iPhone. They've been using OLED for years now.

I think the concern relates more to aspect ratio than phone physical size.

I currently have the galaxy S8+ and iPhone 7+.

Positives and negatives to both designs. Just a matter of preference. I will say usability has a slight advantage on the iPhone due to the keyboard being more splayed.

Then fortunately for you Apple will offer multiple sizes in the 7S model or other models to accommodate that.

The more I think about it, the more I'm drawn towards the 7S model over the 8. There's just too many new tech on that device for me to be able to comfortably buy on the first go.

Can someone kindly explain .. it's narrower but the pixels are wider than plus .. so how does that works?
