iMessage is just so dead simple and doesn't care if it is talking to a different platform. Of course when texting to non-iMessage users, they won't see some of the goodies. To me that is a big plus. Add in that it is synced across all my Apple devices just makes it sweeter.

3rd party apps can be better as long as the other side is using the same thing. And with iOS 11 iMessage is supposed to sync even deletions which it doesn't do now. I tend to text mostly from an ipad or computer and with iMessage it is a consistent presentation. I've tried various 3rd party apps and just never found them to be as good overall though they often had a feature or two that was better.

Of course all of that is my opinion and worth every penny you paid me for it! :)

If the Pixel 2 really is in the running, it means you should wait.

But I'd say you're ready for a change. Certainly the ip8 is a very fine phone, unlike the iPhone X...so why not?

iMessage: I'm an iOS convert and like iMessages but surprisingly enough I like Verizon's messaging app. It just seems really good. I don't use it on my iPhone because iMessages is so integrated but have it on my Windows computer and my iPad Pro (allows phone calling without the iPhone being turned on, I made calls before I owned an iPhone using it).

So iMessages is nice especially if the people you message have iPhones too but Android has plenty of messaging apps including Verizon's. So for me it isn't really a factor.

Go for what you want and can afford.

This is the issue. I can afford both and I predict the pricing of the Pixel to be the same as iPhone (it was last year, and rumours have already earned us that the price is rising from last year just like iPhone).

The main thing keeping me hooked is the potential of the Pixel 2 camera, which was great in Pixel last year. I don't like what I've heard from rumours saying that Google is omitting OIS once again in Pixel 2, however, but of course it is just a rumour. But then there's 4K60 video that I know for a fact the Pixel 2 won't match because the SOC doesn't support it.

I was ready for a change last year and ordered iPhone 7 but returned it due to finding out that I would be losing my job days later. I knew about Pixel 2 back then but the lack of water resistance meant that I wasn't very interested (something rumoured to be fixed this year). It's just the fact that phones have become even more expensive in the meantime in the UK because our rubbish currency that makes it harder as it's a bigger investment this time around. I do still have the 14 day return window to fall back on though.

I'm not a prolific texter to be honest but iMessage would still be a nice bonus as is better than the alternatives. Thanks for sharing.

I've had lots of experience with iOS already as I own an iPad. My main criticism of it is the notifications but I think it's something that I could grow used to with time especially because it would mean that notifications sync up with my iPad which they don't at the moment. My iPad Air 2 still feels really nice to use to this day and it's quite old in tech terms.

what particular thing are you looking for from a phone?

Good camera, fast performance and regular OS updates.

Also, I’ve realised that Pixel 2 gets announced on the 4th October and iPhone 8 is released on 22nd September (12 days difference) meaning that feasibly I could return the iPhone within the 14 day return window if the Pixel 2 really caught my eye and I’d have a chance to trial out the iPhone and see how it goes. That might be a good option?

Certainly doesn't hurt to wait for the Pixel 2 unveil before deciding...if you can stand it. :)

I don't think though the Pixel 2 will beat the ip8 in taking pictures. At least in a demonstrative clear-cut way.

The OIS, 4k and everything else Apple is bundling in...it's keeping up with the other players. At least.

Given how good the Pixel 1 was at taking photos it may go the other way. Though I agree neither are terrible at taking pictures but I think the original Pixel was amazing in taking photos the Pixel 2 will hopefully surpass it.

Have you seen how good the Pixel was on it own against the iPhone? It was rather quite good better more often then not IMO. I think they are close enough you will be happy with either for sure but I don't think one can really dismiss Google's camera system so quick at this point.

I read some comparisons last year with Samsung, Google, LG and Apple cameras and actually, I gave the edge to the LG camera overall.

Samsung and Apple won 2 tests apiece (don't remember if the Pixel won any) and the LG wound up winning 3...AFAICR. It's very subjective what one likes.

By all means the OP should wait for the Pixel 2 if he can. But I also think he will be happy with the ip8, by and large.

Oh totally subjective especially when it comes to people's color preferences. I doubt anyone could be unhappy with a flagship phone camera now days honestly unless a company really flubs up.

And it's a testimony how good the Pixel's camera is w/o OIS.

But having that feature is better than not having it. Ymmv.

Absolutely. Thank goodness for 14 days return.

I certainly concur. I think OIS is absolutely vital now days on our mobile devices. I think it was my biggest issue with the Pixel camera on the original one. If they do this again I would be shocked. It almost takes effort to put out a flagship cell phone camera without OIS especially if that phone is $700 or more. Its pretty much why I even started with the 6S Plus I wanted OIS. Then I wanted optical zoom which is why I went with the 7+.

Personally I was a long time Android user then went to Windows Mobile. Loved Windows Mobile but it's... dead essentially. Switched to iPhone and now looking at doing an iPad and a mac

Even though I have the 6s+ with OIS, I really like the Nexus 5x camera which my husband has (well, had, he sold it in preparation for the Pixel and before it started bootlooping). If you're not hooked on Apple's ecosystem, I think the Pixel 2 is a great option.

As superficial as it is, I am part of several iMessage group chats, and I would hate to switch to Android and be "that one person" who takes away all the fun features. Even though other cross platform options exist (I use Hangouts a lot too), if you're the only Android user among a mass of iOS users, it's hard to get everyone else on board with anything but iMessage.

It was one of the biggest weaknesses of last year's Pixels. There are situations where the Pixel still struggles in low light because of no OIS (see this comparison versus Galaxy S7 from 06:35 onwards;
).

It really helps with my Galaxy S7, I wouldn't really want to lose it.

Keep in mind that the Pixel 2 will be announced October 4, but who knows when it will reach consumers' hands?
[doublepost=1506299274][/doublepost]I really need to upgrade as my Note 4 performs like a dog and my 3rd battery likely won't last long. Right now, camera is a really important feature to me due to a 14 month old. My wife has an iPhone, so iMessage would have some conveniences. I love Google services and macOS is not a thing in my household, but I feel Google services are almost as good on Apple devices anyway. I hate iOS notifications on our iPads. I am perpetually disappointed by the Google Play Store, but I enjoying getting a lot of cheep Android games from Humble Bundle. 5.5" feels like a downgrade and I love my screen real estate. I was very disappointed to see that the so-called 5.8" screen of the X is a bit of a scam with those ears and is considerable smaller than the 8 Plus screen for most applications. I would jump on an X Plus, if it existed.

Right now I am leaning heavily toward the iPhone 8 Plus. I am also probably unwilling to wait a few more months for a Pixel release. iPhone resale values is also very appealing. I will likely get the Plus and hope someone releases a near 7" screen phone a year from now.
