I wasn’t annoyed. I just wanted to give you a heads up in case you didn’t know that the environment around here can be kind of hostile to the way you presented everything. Oh well whatever, I’m not here to edit your posts or tell you what you should have written instead. I write very poorly and get into plenty of sticky situations here, myself.

And nobody’s attacking you...yet. I mean this is all kind of minor. They’re just explaining how posts usually are formatted and giving you a bit of ribbing. But I’ve seen it get way more heated and hostile around here. This is nothing. You’re actually getting a pretty positive response and discussion going now that you’ve explained a bit more why this got to you.

Your post status has you as a “newbie” but I could swear I’ve seen your user name here before going a ways back. Are you a returning forum member? Well, whatever, it’s good to have you here. Sorry if I in particular made you feel unwelcome.

No worries, I accept your apology.
The name is a character from a movie, so others have probably used it. Why is there so much hostility? People are very sensitive about their Apple products evidently.

Ah, that explains the familiarity of the name! I haven’t watched very many movies or tv over my lifetime. I’m sure I’ve missed some great memes and characters. I’m missing all of the Game of Thrones references these days. Sigh.

Well it’s not so much that we are like this all the time. Around iPhone release time the forum often gets flooded with trolls. Among the many new iPhone owners with sincere questions and concerns, there are some people who make up some really odd issues or problems so they can bash Apple Quality control and promote other phones. After wading through post after post like that, which are so negative and just posted for the purpose of trolling, patience and tempers get frayed.

Actually we encourage discussion about the merits of other phone brands. I own several Android phones and am always interested in them and we talk about other phones a lot on another part of this forum. But it’s usually done with a certain decorum. Not “Apple sucks, buy Samsung”.

Not that you were doing that. Not at all. I did think your concern was genuine but there was a way you went about making your concerns known that I could see might hurt your credibility as a new forum member. It’s not easy being new anywhere. I made lots of missteps myself. I was trying to warn you, but I did it with kind of a stuck up snide tone, to be frank. I didn’t realize it as I was writing it, but now that I look back and re read my post to you it stares me in the face. I don’t know where my manners went! There is no excuse for it. I’m glad you accepted my apology and I do hope to see you stick around and get any help or advice you need in the future.

We really are very nice and helpful here. I have learned so much from other members and the many articles and discussions on this site. This is just a challenging time to welcome new members. I hope you bear with us. And welcome!

Ah that makes sense. I honestly was not trying to troll, I cannot stand trolling. I have always owned Android and my wife has always used Iphone. I was tired of my Android always needing to be rebooted and laggy. Also, my battery life was awful. I must have spent $100.00 buying replacement batteries for my previous android phone and I was sick of it. It seems there is a learning curve with the Iphone compared to what I am used to. I must admit the camera on this thing is far superior to any smart phone I have ever owned.

I hope switching over to iPhone works well for you. To be honest, on the newly released iOS 11 my battery life took a huge nosedive but to my relief the latest update seems to have helped a lot. My husband has a lot of apps for work and financial services on his Samsung S8+ and has been battling some lag. It creeps up when he least wants to deal with it, so he’s back on his iPhone 7 Plus. The iOS 11 hasn’t been the smoothest rollout I’ve seen, but it’s brought some new features I like and am trying to familiarize myself with.

Yes, I saw an article on the DailyMail the other day about users complaining about iOS 11 causing issues with battery life. I think I will like the Iphone once I learn how to use it. It has some pretty nice features and its a solid reliable phone. I used to be into "rooting" android devices so that is why I always used Android. I have grown tired of that hobby and do not wish to modify my phones any longer.

Just keep it.

Look at the bright side, it already has a micro scratch in the coating...you don't have to cry about the first scratch now.

LOL, excellent point. I dont believe it is a crack or a scratch in the glass. I shined a flashlight directly into the screen (while it was powered off) and you cannot even see the scratch under the screen protector. I am thinking it is simply a scratch in the coating. I know this is all so lame and I am sorry for posting a new thread for something so trivial. My wife doesnt even want to talk to me about it anymore because she told me to return it and not apply the screen protector and I didnt listen. So, because I didnt take her advice she doesnt want to talk to me about it anymore.
[doublepost=1506728549][/doublepost]Maybe I misunderstood the purpose of this forum, I thought it was for support and things like that. Based on the name of the site, is it just a discussion site? I swear the threads that I read about the 7 and the 6 with micro scratches were from this forum. At any rate, I did not mean to cause any trouble.

You didn't, don't worry. Lol, talk about karma...I just discovered a blotchy scratch in the oleophobic coating of my Samsung S8+ and I frowned so hard I cracked my face! I had kept it in a wallet case up until about two days ago when I put it in a more usual case. I don't have a display protector on it because it makes VR look funny. Anyway, I was upset to have this blotch because I'm a little worried it's going to be magnified in the Gear VR Goggles. Oh well, it's not a big deal compared to anything going on in the world or even the rest of my life, but it's one of those little aggravations that make you go :confused::mad::(:rolleyes: (The stages of grief over dinks and scratches to shiny new toys as rendered in emoji--everyone don't let me near animoji!).

Take care and I hope your weekend is a nice one. Give my regards to your wife. I'm often rolling my eyes at my husband and he does the same with my foibles. It's human and well, that's marriage. :p

Hello All,

I just got my first Iphone last night. I got the 8 Plus. I peeled the plastic off and there was a small scratch on the screen. It is small and I cannot tell if it is in the coating they put on the screen or into the actual glass. I pulled up videos and pictures and it is not effecting resolution or anything.
No dead pixels. I put a OtterBox glass screen protector on it and you cannot even see it.
I think it was just in the olephobic coating and not the actual glass.
Verizon said they will exchange it due to their 14 day stress free guarantee.
I just dont want to hassle with going to Verizon, doing an exchange, removing the screen protector and buying a new one for the new phone.
How can you tell if the scratch is actually into the glass or if it is just in the olephobic coating?

Same exact thing with my 8 Plus. Like you indicated, it’s easy to ignore and I suspect it’s on the coating and not in glass.

Just living with it. I put a glass screen protector on and called it a day.

I honestly didnt think posting here about it would be a big deal.
I just wanted to see what others thought about it.
I didnt expect so many people to get upset.
This is my first Iphone so I wanted to see if others had similar experiences.
I have seen threads about it happening on the 6 and the 7.
What I wanted to know was, how could I tell if it was in the glass or the coating.
Thank you all for your replies, even the annoyed ones.

I don't think your post was anything for anyone to get upset about but I've learned being here that some people just can't help their rude replies. I completely understand not wanting to go through the hassle of returning the phone, etc. just if the coating is scratched. You were simply asking how you can tell if the coating is scratched versus the glass considering this is your first iPhone...I'm not sure how to tell which is scratched but if it were me personally I probably wouldn't exchange it since it's not visible or effecting anything but I also completely understand wanting a perfectly new phone for how expensive they are.

Well, I couldn't stop obsessing about it. I decided all the hassle was worth it to scratch the itch in my brain. I am sure my psychologist would have encouraged me to keep the phone but I couldn't do it. I took it back to Verizon, told them the whole story. The associate took the screen protector off and claimed she couldn't see a scratch. I found it and showed it to her. She said her manager might not approve of the exchange as the scratch was not significant. I was ready to lose my **** if she came back and told me no after the chat representative told me last night it wouldn't be an issue. She swapped out it. I asked her to keep the plastic on the new phone. I am afraid to peel it off. I told her I suffer from OCD and I couldn't stop obsessing about the scratch. I hope I can move forward now. I will have to spend another ten bucks to get a new screen protector on Amazon.

I’m glad you were able to get a new phone and get everything resolved. It does suck that you have to buy a new screen protector but $10 for a peace of mind? Sounds like a good deal to me

Sometimes screen protectors are the best way to go, even if I feel like they make the device look cheap, they do serve a purpose for those who need it most.

That was my thought as well. 10 bucks and an hour of my time is worth it to stop the obsessions. On a lighter note I have been playing with the phone and Siri is pretty cool.

LOL.

Seriously? A tiny scratch that might be in the coating and that Verizon offered you the opportunity to exchange?

You cannot be serious.
Well, this person spent a lot of money on a phone. Yeah, I would be angry as well. Although that person could exchange it or return it within 14 days. To some people, it wouldn't bother them, but not everyone could afford current smartphones. So, yeah. it would be a legit complaint for some, and we can't knock those people for that.

How do they make device feel cheap? Can you explain?

I use screen protector on my all iPhones and i don't feel they make my device feel cheap. Being how protective they are against scratches and shatters.

What kind do you use? I have a great one on my SE. you can’t tell there is even one on it. But the ones I have tried a film one and a tempered glass one and you can tell there’s something there. It’s hard to keep the edges from attracting crud.

These really don’t need screen protectors. I am glad you were able to get a replacement. I knew this would annoy you and, as I said earlier, something like this is hard to ignore in a device you use as often as you use a smartphone.

Enjoy your new phone!

Oh, I totally understood him being unhappy about the scratch. I was utterly baffled as to why he wouldn’t just swap it since his carrier said he could. That was all I was confused about. :)

Cheap Chines one which sells for 6-7 bucks! on Amazon :p

Is there no way to force landscape mode?
Like on the home screen or in the app store? I am so used to holding my Samsung galaxy s5 in landscape mode. I had an app that could force landscape. Doesn't seem to be an option on iPhone. Anyone know of a work around?

I was at first wondering what the hell you are talking about, of course there is a landscape mode. Then I just turned my iPhone 7 Plus on iOS 11.1 sideways. Holy Schnitzel, it's gone! Or so I thought. Then I tried it again on the home screen and like molasses going up hill in January, the view finally turned on its side. At least on the home screen, but not on the App Store. Emails definitely still have a landscape mode. As does Safari. Now it seems to be turning on its side fast enough on the home page but it's like it needed to wake up for the first time I tried it. I have no idea what sorcery is afoot on the iPhone 8 to prevent you from getting a landscape view, but keep us posted.

Edit to add...you didn't happen to lock your view to portrait did you? I forget how to do that myself but I remember it could be done.

Unlock the view so it’ll automatically go from portrait to landscspe when you rotate your phone.
