So I have this usage and standby time being the same issue on my iPhone 8 Plus. I just can't figure out what is causing this. It did not do this when I first got it. So here is what I have tried.

1.Restored from iCloud back up. usage and standby same. wifi on
2. Restored back up from iTunes (encrypted). problem still exist. Wifi on
3. Set up as new device and not use Apple ID - problem solved. Wifi on
4. Set up as new device and use Apple ID - problem still exist. Wifi on

Clearly I think it's something with my Apple ID.

Also when I step outside of the house and not connected to wifi, then the problem stops, but when I come back then it continues.

I do want to note that my other iPhone 8 Plus does not do this at all and not sure why it's doing this on the other one. So I'm just baffled by this.

I really hate to lose my back ups and I'd really hate to find out that it's my current Apple ID that's an issue and if I had to create a new one.

Also I'd hate to return this one because it's a perfect phone in every aspect. No yellow tints, no screen scratch out of the box (I'm very OCD and if I ever receive one with a scratch on the box, it goes back to Apple), home button perfectly aligned (meaning all sides are perfect, not lopsided where one side is lower than the other side, you can definitely tell), and no gaps between the screen and the aluminum frame.

Any ideas? There is a thread in the imore forum where someone had this same issue and found it out was the iCloud in the laptop that that cause the standby and usage going up at the same time whenever he is in office. So I'm not sure what the culprit is.

If I can't find the solution, I may as well set up a genius appointment and see what they say about this.

Update: So I put my phone on airplane mode and let it sit for a while without wifi, bluetooth, and cellular on and the usage time didn't go up. I turned off airplane mode and let it sit for a while still does it, usage and and standby time going up at the same rate.

Put it on airplane mode again, issue stops. At least for now I turned off airplane mode and the issue stopped. But I think this is just a temporary fix for me. I'm afraid that if I reboot the device, it will come back. I've seen some post in the 11.1 beta that I'm not the only one to have this same usage and standby time issue.

But I'd still like to find out what is causing this issue. Clearly something is stuck behind the process for icloud.

Update 2: Issue is back when back on wifi. I'm just about ready to just return this phone as the other one doesn't have this issue.

Phone is probably syncing something related to your iTunes account, which requires WiFi.

Actually I found out what the issue was. It was the auto-brightness setting. No wonder why screen brightness didn't adjust accordingly. I turned off and turn it back on and resolved the issue for now. I'll keep an eye through out the week and see it goes.

[doublepost=1513724029][/doublepost]I was having the same problem periodically. After reading your post I toggled the auto brightness on/off and turned location based alerts off. So far I’ve not had the usage and standby times the same. I did a hard reset after making the changes.

Not resolved, wondering who else is having the problem

Maybe not an issue. People seem to focus incorrectly on the "Standby" time.

The term "Standby" is misleading. Standby is time since last full charge, not how much usage time left. If you pull the phone off the charger and start using it, and pretty much don't stop (eg. starting playing music, lots of notifications), the Usage and Standby will be the same. Real test is to charge the phone before bed, remove from charger, and look at the value when you wake: should be a fair sized gap. Or charge overnight, pull from charger, then putter around the house for a few minutes (ie. make a cup of coffee) when you should see a few minutes difference.

Can do the usual things to limit drain. Limit notifications. Facebook app is notorious for battery drain (stop background for it, no notifications; assuming Facebook Messenger is equally bad for battery). Limit background activities.

Yeah, way way ahead of you, but thanks.

Yes, charge it to 100%, let it sit idly and not use it at all for 3 hours and then pick it up and it says usage 3 hours and standby 3 hours with all notifications turned off and push and everything conceivable turned off, etc.

Go to check location fitness tracking, after downloading a walking pedometer app my standby and usage times both read about 15 hours after a days usage, I tend to ignore it but it does mean the only number of hours you can see is the hours since your phone was last charged
