So, what did you do after replacement phone did the same? Did you exchange it once again or what?: )

Why you have to be like that? I paid a fair amount of money for a premium product. It should work properly and should provide a great experience. I’ve had other iPhones, none have exhibited this behaviour, including my last phone also on iOS 11. If it’s a software issue, then fine fix it. I came here and asked if anyone was having the same issue; I wasn’t getting responses. I checked a demo iP8+ in store, and two different Apple employees said the dimming was odd.

I’ve noticed mine doing this sometimes too. Neither nightshift nor true tone are turned on. It doesn’t bother me though. Just a minor curiosity. Will probably be fixed in a software update.

It seems that you misunderstood my comment. I am having the same issue and I also think that phone MUST work properly. I just wanted to know, what did you do next?

I hope it’s fixed. Personally I find it really distracting. Especially outdoors in the sun, or anywhere with above dim lighting.

Oh I thought you were making fun of me. Apologies! Haha. I am hoping it’s going to be a software fix. Even though it’s been a few weeks, it still annoys me. Very distracting. So far, I’ve just accepted it as it-better-get-fixed-soon. I use my phone extensively for work so I’m always on it.

One of the reasons I went with the 8 Plus over the X was the assumption the 8 Plus was a refined design that had been introduced, honed, fine tuned. I wasn’t interested in a first Gen product with whatever issues etc. So while some don’t seem bothered by this issue, I find it incredibly annoying.

Phone is working great so far, like it - except for one annoying thing.

I have a black and white skyline as my wallpaper. After unlocking the phone in a brightly lit area, a few seconds later, the wallpaper picture dims.

If I am in regularly lit area, the dimming doesn't happen. If I change the picture to one of the crazy bright colour ones under wallpaper-stills any in the third row, they don't dim. If I change the wallpaper to wallpaper-live, the third picture then it dims. If I turn off auto brightness no dimming occurs.

I'm using the same picture on an iPad Pro no dimming issue after unlocking.

Anyone else seeing this? Super annoying me.

I'm not sure what you mean by just the wallpaper dimming, but I've discovered that when there's a high power draw and the screen brightness is set to full, the phone will eventually limit the screen brightness to max 50% to conserve battery life. When the phone draws less power and cools down, the display brightness will revert back to normal. I've had this happen on my 6 Plus as well as 8.

When I first noticed the issue, I thought it was the wallpaper dimming. In fact it’s the entire display. Bright location + unlock = display dims abruptly three seconds after unlocking.

Yep, that's exactly what happens. I'm not sure if it's a high power draw, high temperature or a combination of both that triggers it, but I'm pretty sure it's a safety mechanism to prevent damage to the phone. I don't live in a warm climate myself so it's usually triggered when I'm doing CPU intensive stuff like gaming or restoring an iCloud backup while having the brightness set to full.

If you disable auto-brightness, try and see if that eliminates the problem. As stated, my hope is that it is a software issue that can be corrected. I would have returned this phone after my initial exchange, but I don’t have an alternate, and I need it for work.

i have experienced the phenomenon of the display brightness dimming when it is full brightness in order to cool down when i was using my 6s but I can assure you that this is not the same issue as my 8plus. the issue happens even if i am in regular office lighting, maybe just not as noticeable.

Happy to see that i am not alone to have the exactly same issue you describe. When unlocking the phone, 2-3 sec later the full screen (and very visible on the wallpaper which is the ios11 moon) dims and gets darker / with more contrast.
I reset the settings and the issue was / is still there, even after ios 11.0.3
Looking forward to having a fix
Cheers

Came on this morning to make a thread about this and yours was top post, ha.

I just replicated the issue 5 times in a row with the phone sitting flat on my desk at work.

Simply put my finger on the Touch ID - phone instantly unlocks to home screen - 3, 2, 1 and screen changes brightness abruptly. I use auto-brightness and happen to like tru-tone and use it almost all of the time - but, Ive never noticed this happen on my 9.7" iPad Pro.

It is minor; however, can be distracting as myself and others are clearly stopping to think about it.

The thing that bothers me is that - I'd then lock the screen. And I could repeat the above process and it happens time and time again.

What I thought it might be is that if you were in a certain environment - put your phone in your pocket or bag, etc - then moved to another environment - the sensors would take a second to get acclimated and adjust accordingly. THAT I could understand. But, the fact that I can replicate it over and over and over again in the same spot with no changes in lighting - that makes me scratch my head a bit.

hopefully, someone who knows more about this stuff than I do can come up with something as to why it's happening - or is it really a defect?

mehhhhhhhh lol

I really am enjoying my iPhone 8+ otherwise.

Where was everyone a few weeks ago! Would have saved me the hassle of returning the first one! I hope it's fixed. Nothing similar on iOS 11 on iPad Pro 10.5, or previous iPhone 7 Plus. So there is something with iOS 11 on the 8 Plus, or something with the sensor.

I believe it’s a software issue, as it doesn’t happen all the time. The question is not “why screen dims”, but “why so sharply”. I wrote a feedback to Apple, highly recommend you all to do the same! Maybe they responds to the issue faster.

Your phone does it with auto brightness off? It's nearly impossible, as this issue is related to autobrightness.

My autobrightness is off. It took me a bit to find how to shut it off after iOS 11, so I know it’s off.

And yes if my iPhone is asleep and I go over and press the home button for a second the wall paper is dull, not the date and time. Then the background brightens to my desired setting.

iPhone 6 Plus.

Edit: I’m speaking about a phone being asleep mind you. It’s never done this before iOS 11.

My 6 has been doing this since iOS 11 update. Can’t wait until next week.

I know for sure that the issue that most of us are talking about does not happen if auto brightness is off. I've actually tried this experiment in many demo phones in the Apple store. I tried the same on a display iPhone 7 and it did not exhibit the same behavior. Strange...

I think i found the fix.

Set both your wallpapers to "still" as opposed to Perspective. It seemed to have fixed it for me.

My iPhone 8 Plus is doing this strange dimming thing as well. I dont use True Tone, I dont use Auto-Brightness and I have my screen brightness set to 100% and it STILL dims! I have already had one replacement phone and this second one is doing the same! I dont know what to do. Its driving me crazy as I cant see the screen in sunlight!
