With a virtual home button, I wonder what the sequence of buttons will be for a "hard reboot" and screen shot...

Probably have to schedule an appointment then take the phone to the Apple store. Then they will probably charge you for the non-warrently service.

Sooo.....they removed the chin on the hardware only to add the chin in software, so what's the great gain from this again?

We really don't know yet, but it seems the bottom area may be a software function area that could change depending on the current app. Developers could get pretty creative with use cases. Also, since this area can disappear, there will be times that the entire screen will be filled. Videos, games, anything really.

Didn't you just explain current Android?

So they put in a copy of the Android bottom bar, which robs the iPhone of every last bit of original identity it had.

Firstly the scales portrayed in these drawings are completely different to the photos of the apparent mock up devices, in those the iPhone 8 is much bigger then the iPhone 7.
....

The size rumors, from the beginning, have always been a slightly bigger than the standard iPhone with a screen size as big or slightly larger than the Plus. Perceived sizes from pictures of mockups notwithstanding. If you want the gigantic no bezel phone though, the s8 awaits. ;)

Never going to happen. Carriers are too vain and I'm pretty sure it's their requirement that the carrier name is displayed. They always want you to know who you're getting service from, and it comes in very handy to know when you're roaming.
Right. I forgot about that and updated my OP accordingly.

They need to dump the carrier name and battery icon. If I have the % turned on, I don't need to see the icon. Can't stand that. Doubt they'll get rid of the carrier name since that's an agreement with the carriers themselves. However, they could put icons up there that indicates what carrier you use. All major carriers have small enough logos.
Perhaps they could infrequently fade between the two as per my updated OP. :)

Haha, it seems we think alike.

I am not sure, I don't use a current android. If it works well, I don't have an issue with it. They have to come up with a software solution that works with an all screen phone. I am not sure why making a software change around the use of an all screen phone robs the iPhone of it's identity though. Maybe their implementation is better? Maybe the bottom touch area will be more advanced than what is currently on the Android side. Either way, it's still iOS and comes with all of the advantages iOS and Apple products have always had. I don't think there's anything wrong with Android's ideas.

If they have the UI on both sides of the screen without a black bar on the top, I'll be looking for a jailbreak tweak to fix that up quickly.

Aside from that, I look forward to having back buttons and general menu interface on the bottom of the screen. Hopefully that still happens. It gets annoying on these tall devices.

Tbh, the way Android has their virtual button area set up it is is very well optimized, I'm glad apple will be introducing their own iteration of this design. *Buttons hide when not in use (full screen video, game, etc)*

The resizing, etc, is understandable but hiding it completely is annoying unless that area is still active as a home button.

Next leak - you squint at the iPhone and the home button will reappear lol.

For the screenshot you wink at it.

So you're saying that the iPhone is being robbed of all identity because it will be able to hide its home button during a video?

Could we stop with this stupid brown-nosing of Ming Chi Kuo in EVERY single article? That idea did not begin with him... tons of people were speculating it. And hell, Ming Chi Kuo has been wrong about a LOT lately.

Such as....?

I agree, Ming Chi Kuo doesn't know more than many other people, just guessing as well.

He must be very good at guessing then..

Aren't they mostly South Korean? What are some North Korean suppliers?

Might want to check the map. That's like assuming if there is a big war on Manhattan, nothing to worry about in Brooklyn. South Korea probably has THE targets that North Korea technology can actually hit. It is highly unlikely that South Korea could be "business as usual" if there is a big war on North Korea.

Think of it like how Apple removed the hardware keyboard and made it software. This way the keyboard doesn't always have to be there, same with the home button. Could be great for a lot of reasons.

Not sure how I like navigation bars at the bottom though.

Errr... Do you even use a phone? The bottom is the best place for navigation buttons to be.... The top of the phone is the hardest place to reach when using one hand.

We don't all like using our phone two handed...

Thats why i stick with the smaller versions of iPhones not the plus sizes.

Yet more emphasis on visual appeal over usability. The great thing about the tactile home button is that you don't have to be looking at it to use it - for instance to unlock your phone. And just wait until apps can hide the home button to make it harder for you to dismiss them.

I think people said similar things to when we moved to a virtual keyboard. I think people will adapt. People are super fast typers without tactile feedback.

Is it just me or is all of this information leaked from the HomePod a little too easy?
Nah, that's perfectly normal. My Sony speakers just told me everything about the next Underworld movie from Sony Pictures and Kate Backinsale's split up with Matt Rife.

The home button functionality is the biggest mystery left for the iPhone 8. Sounds like Touch ID is gone, so all that's left is to figure out how I get home when I'm in the middle of cat videos on Instagram.

You force touch the home button area. It works like that on the S8 its a very simple solution and Apple have already got people understanding the use of force touch. whereas it was a new feature to Samsung users. But do you hear any complaints of no home button from S8 users? Nope.

Videos will use the full screen obviously, thats the gain. Returning to home screen would require force touch in home button area. Just like the S8...

Agreed so very, very much. I'm well aware of what carrier I have, and the battery icon is completely redundant. In the rare case of roaming, turn the bar blue with the name of the new carrier or give me a persistent banner notification until acknowledged or something to signify it. I've never understood why such valuable screen real estate is wasted on displaying these two things.

Wouldn't you think Apple has a strong enough upper hand to tell the carriers their name won't be persistently displayed anymore (at least as a user option)? I really doubt a carrier would go to the mat and drop selling the iPhone over that...

I just wanna know where the dang clock is going to be.

i'm with you. i want to know where it's going. my assumption is the "notch" won't be there...hopefully.

Call me a Luddite, but I still miss the keyboard from my env3.

I press the home button multiple times per minute when using my phone. If that becomes a multi step process it will be an enormous headache. I also frequently unlock it without looking at it. Being unable to do that even if there's still Touch ID will bite.
