Considering I haven't used the port on my iPhone 15 Pro Max to transfer data, not even one single time in the two years I've had it, complete non issue for me.

In fact, I haven't used the port on a phone to do this even one time in the last 5 years.

I have a 16 Pro so I’m not upgrading this year but if I bought an Air, I wouldn’t care about the USB 2 speeds. In 10+ years of using iPhones I’ve never transferred data off an iPhone using a cable. In my case I literally could not care less about the USB 2 limitation. And if I don’t care, it’s not a stretch to say that the vast majority of people will not care. Most people simply don’t know the difference between USB 2 and 3. People here commenting on MacRumors are not like the average consumer.

For some people it will be an issue. They’ll need to decide if it’s an issue they are willing to work with.
My sense of time is off lol. When you put 10 years my mind went to first gen iPhones and was like those definitely need a cable to setup and transfer data, and then I realized 10 years ago was 2015 haha

The last time I used the port on my 15 Pro was to connect to my rental car for Apple CarPlay.

Of course I did the same thing many are doing here — whining about how it’s unbelievable that the 2025 Genesis G70 lacks wireless Apple CarPlay. Come on!

It gives people something to be “outraged” about.

I’m surprised they kept the port at all.
I'm thinking it's still needed for wired CarPlay. That's my only use case anyway. Otherwise it's wireless charging and iCloud data transfers.

On the bright side at least it didn't take 25 years for them to include a 120hz screen on a baseline iPhone 17. Only 8 years since phones first started getting them.

Before complaining, do you iPhone 17 users even have a cable capable of 10 GB/second? The charging cable in the box has USB 2 transfer rates.

This is a non issue. <1% of iPhone users plug in their phone to their computer.

To the people reading this, who are about to complain, you are part of that 1%.

Ask any random iPhone user - they won’t even know that it’s possible or what you can do when you plug it in to your computer.

When doing a backup with my 16 Pro it seems the USB 3 speed doesn't even make a difference. Seems you only benefit if you're transferring large or many files or using certain accessories.
May be in part because they basically never update their desktop software.

Doing a physical backup shouldn't require a computer at all (time machine has existed for forever on a Mac), but backing to an encrypted flash drive/external SSD at USB 3+ speeds might hurt iCloud revenue, so we'll never see it.

tbh I don't see the issue with this - the port is basically a charging port.

the last time I plugged in a phone to transfer data was about 10+ years ago.

For those doing high end photography or video you're probably on a pro model anyway for the cameras.

Imagine not paying Apple a monthly fee for iCloud... Apple's done a good job of getting people to forget that other options can and should exist.

Do you think a lot of people with non-Pro phones are shooting in ProRes?

Seems to only exist on the Pro models, right?
ProRes no, video in general, yes. Any longer video in 4K (non-ProRes) is already a pain to get off the phone.

We have USB4 now which is close to Thunderbolt speeds. It’s inexcusable to ship new devices in 2025, at this price level, with USB2. This saves Apple a few bucks or cents on the BOM, but it makes the experience significantly worse for the customer.

This is done deliberately to “persuade” customers into the next higher price bracket where they perceive a better value. Meanwhile, the higher price bracket items contain much more markup for Apple. - That’s Tim Cook’s Apple where profits come at the expense of the experience of an Apple product.

I use my iPhone for content creation and transfer videos to my Samsung t7 ssd drive which I then edit from on my Mac. Other than that I rarely use the usb feature and don’t think the average user will be bothered, especially as they can consider airdrop.

Still don’t understand the whining about this.

If faster USB speeds are important to you, get the 17 Pro.

If you want a really thin phone, get 17 Air.

Find the one that best meets your needs. Or none of them. If a Samsung meets your needs better, buy it.

Disappointing to see the lower speeds on Air. It is a premium device. Not surprised to see the lower speeds on the base model as this is something that Apple usually does.

I don't think it is an issue for 95%+ of the iPhone user population. It is only a big deal to the usual complainers on MR and the YT creators who fret over a few seconds extra.
As expected, the same old argument to not evolve. You should have stay 4 legs.
