Apple introduced the super thin iPhone Air today, and MacRumors videographer Dan Barbera was able to test it out after Apple's event. He shared some initial thoughts, giving us a first look at the device in the real world.

Unsurprisingly, the iPhone Air is indeed "Awe Dropping" at first touch just because it's so lightweight and thin in the hand despite the 6.5-inch display. Even though it's light, it still feels like a premium device, which is expected at the $999 price point. The iPhone Air is 5.6mm thick, which makes it the thinnest iPhone to date, and it weighs 165 grams.

Apple added a new 18-megapixel front-facing camera that has a square sensor, so you can get more into the field of view. It's useful for group selfies and video calls.

There's a camera "plateau" at the back of the iPhone Air for the single-lens 48-megapixel rear camera. According to Apple, that area holds the front-facing camera, rear-facing camera, and some other hardware, enabling the thin design. The frame is titanium, and Apple says it won't bend. The OLED display offers 120Hz ProMotion refresh rates.

Other features include Face ID, Camera Control, and an Action button.

Apple added a custom N1 networking chip for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, a new C1X modem, and the A19 Pro chip to optimize battery life. The iPhone Air battery lasts for up to 27 hours when watching videos, and you can extend that if you pay another $99 for a MagSafe battery pack. The other iPhone 17 models have longer battery life, but the iPhone Air does have a better battery than the prior-generation iPhone 16.

The iPhone Air will be available for pre-order this Friday, and it'll launch on the 19th.

Yes looks beatiful, i don't care much about photography, my last phone was apple 11, so time for update

You take away our mini, then tease with this Air but you can't just put the 6.3 "normal" screen for us, you have to go bigger. UGH.

And just call it the 17 Air. Not just "Air". UGH.

And $999. Again, UGH.

Looks like the "e" is the model for me. I don't want to spend those kind of $$$.

So I keep my 13 mini another couple years.

This guy gets it, I hate how much my 14 pro max causes my pants and shirts to sag
There are a lot of options smaller than an iPhone Pro Max, without having to go as thin and function-deprived as the Air!

Like others have said, for those who want one, congrats, knock yourself out. However, I don't think that current phone thickness has been keeping many consumers up at night with insomnia.

it looks beautiful. i love the polished sides. but a single speaker and that unimpressive camera are misses imo. i wonder whether or not this thing is top heavy.
It’s not unimpressive to those that don’t care about the cameta
The pro models are much thicker and heavier. My 16PM feels like a brick sometimes and the new models are even bulkier.

There are probably too many compromises this year for me (e.g. one speaker, usb 2, no mmWave) but a second generation model that addresses those concerns and maybe adds in the macro camera from the regular model would be a killer phone and way more appealing than this year’s pro.

The camera bar still brings the ick but the 17 Air in cloud white with polished titanium looks way better than I thought it would and makes the clunky pro design look terrible in comparison. Still embarrassing to ape the pixel’s design but c’est la vie.
You get mmWave on your location?

The magic number is 6 ounces. The last iPhones that weighed less than 6 oz. were the 16e, the SE line, and the mini line. All of them had compromises. The 16e is a surprisingly good-seller because the screen is not considered as much of a compromise as it was for the others. Now comes the Air which weighs 5.8 oz. with a 6.5" screen. It should sell quite well regardless of the limited cameras or possibly questionable battery life.

It's not that one phone weighs one or two more ounces than another. It's that the 14 Pro weighed nearly 50% more than the 5/SE 1st gen (5 oz.) by comparison. I live in Arizona where we wear shorts 9 months of the year. I feel the weight. Cases make a difference too, that's why I've been going thinner and thinner with each iPhone size increase. Whatever the phone manufacturers can do to rein in the size and weight creep without making their products fragile is worth the effort.

I'm a pro so I, off course, use only things monikered with Pro....

But most importantly, I want THIS. And I feel I'm ready to step into a life with less phonebulk in my pocket. Less heft in my hand.

I am already using my phone less as a primary device, moving my usage over the to my iPad, Pro off course seeing I'm pro, for a more immersive experience.

I seriously am starting to "despise" all the Phone Zombies around me at all times..and I dislike myself being one as well. I'm trying to be present instead of online. My phone I will use as auxiliary. Tickets, quick chat, general stuff that's quick actions. Surfing and movies are definitely now a no go.

My only sadness is the cameras, but after checking....I use my main camera more than 90% anyway. So it's more the feeling of loosing than actual loosing.

Battery will, hopefully, not be an issue as I intend to be conscious about using it less.

But I want a carbon road bike first, then I'm hungry for a iPad Pro 13 M4/5..THEN a thin phone.

But thin is where I'm headed I feel..

Honestly, the iPhone Air should be the regular iPhone.

Solves the "gap-issue" up to the Pro's. Gives the majority of people more than they actually need anyway.

Makes the decision much easier for everyone.

I have no interest in using Android.
I don't think it's about interest really...Android is on par (minimum) with iOS now. You're just emotionally attached to Apple, which is fine. As a Windows user since 286 chips, I do feel the same. There's no real reason to pick the one over the other anymore...but the feeling of allegiance is still strong on both sides.

Look I think it's cool.. I guess I don't understand the tiering of the phones. Is this just to appeal to those that want form factor? I guess what I am saying is, why not get the pro.. do we need an air phone? Does it really fill in some gap that was in the lineup previously? Obviously its not for me - it's pretty though.. I'll give it that.
Yes. It's all about a lightweight form factor. I've got a 14Pro (had an 11iphone pro prior) and it's felt uncomfortably heavy and thick from day one. Just never liked the feel and weight. The percentage of time I use the triple lenses compared to the time lugging a pretty heavy and cumbersome smartphone for daily tasks has made me crave something thin and light. I very well may be a buyer of the Air instead of the new Pro.

I haven't used an Android device since 2009. I am sure it has come a long way (in many regards) since then but, I don't like the fragmentation, the lack of meaningful updates for whatever flavor of Android the phone happen to come with, not to mention all the bad risk just using the Android store. And most of all, Android lacks the seamless integration and hardware support, and customer service that Apple offers me. Granted I have to pay the Apple tax to get those things but, for me, it is currently worth it. If down the road that changes, I don't have a problem taking a look at something different.

The huge camera bump still looks ridiculous and defeats the purpose of a thin iPhone. Just don’t get the point of a thin iPhone when most people will use a case anyway which will bulk it up to a normal size.
