What am I missing from the Air vs standard 17. Standard 17 is only 12gms heavier, you wont notice that and it has two cameras.
Also, smaller dimensions, except thickness.
As a mini lover, it does seem the regular 17 to be the closest to get back to that loving feeling

Why does everyone always add in "I'm in the minority" when talking about wanting a new mini? I don't remember anyone asking for a thinner phone, but there has been a low yet persistent request for a mini since the iPhone 14 came out.
I've wanted a lighter phone since the 12 series. The mini worked with compromises, then Apple got rid of it. We'll see if the same fate awaits the Air. If it does, back to the drawing board. If it's successful, Apple started a trend (though Samsung was technically first).

3% of sales figures the year the 13 mini is pretty self explanatory. Mini owners are vocal as hell on here and other forums, shame forum posts aren’t representative of $ amounts.

I'm not disagreeing, I'm pointing out that the Air is Apple in search of a problem, while the Mini is an existing problem that Apple is choosing to ignore.

Apple appears to have optimized for ASP per device, but they're failing way behind on the "Apple sells devices that I want" metric.

Absolutely, no argument there.

The people complaining about a speaker for content consumption on a 6.5" device speaks volumes (lol) as to what most are using their phones for. IE phone calls are secondary to watching videos and scrolling social media.

I've tried the newer devices every year and have fallen back to my mini each time, since I got it at launch. Air is overkill for my uses, but I'll be damned if it isn't a nice change, and a premium one at that.

This is hilarious… like… let's make the battery half as thick and charge extra, and call it the thinest iPhone ever…

It's like a trailer for a car. You only use it for a few days in a year. The rest of the year you have a cool, little car.
Much better than buying an ugly pick-up.

If anyone buys this battery pack, why didn’t you just get a slightly thicker phone? Because with this thing attached, it’s fatter than a Pro phone 😄

The Air has way too many compromises.

350 days of the year you have a lighter and thin phone.

Some of us don't buy a phone to handle everything, but are happy to accessorise and spend a lot of money to handle edge cases.

iPhone Air customers are summed up with one phrase “more money than brains”. 😂

Increase the iPhone Air asking price then charge more for an external battery pack to get through an unrestricted day of usage, at that accumulated price might as well go for a Pro.

What you don't understand is that for some, reduced weight has an enormous value.

An iPhone Pro will weigh more 100% of the time. A solution like this might only be used 10-15 days a year by me.

Reduced weight and size is only noticed initially, the human brain and body muscles are a marvel as both will adapt unless you have a degenerative condition most will adapt within a short period of time.

Do people complain that clothes, jackets etc are heavy too these days? 🙄

If the Air is indeed Apple’s proof of concept that they can release a good foldable that’s really thin, then this phone is worth it to them regardless if it sells or gets discontinued in a couple of years. Since Apple works at least two phones ahead, we can expect an Air next year. After that depends on the success of the Air’s sales.

Just a heads up that it is not heavier; the new current MBA design is slightly lighter.
Ah. Fair point. I have the new 15” model, versus the 13” I had for the wedge model, and the screen size is nice. The size:weight ratio seems oddly higher than it needed to be for the bigger screen. I suspect that’s just due to the squared shape and the layout of the innards.

Yes they do. Layering and the usage of heavy coats are real phenomena. Seasonality tends to obscure that.

More wasted energy but hey apparently being convenient and eco-friendly are contradictions at Apple HQ.
So based on Apple accepting the popularity of inductive chargers and ignoring all of Apples efforts to be eco-friendly in other areas you think that Apple isn’t trying to do what it can for the environment?

Of the energy that you use throughout a day, how much of that energy do you think goes into charging your phone. How much difference does it make if your occasional use battery pack can only supply 65% of its charge? Perhaps that is an inconsequential issue and there are bigger fish to fry, though of course in an eco-friendly fashion.

Do keep in mind that they mothballed the MBA and spat on its grave with the “new” lame idea of the Air. It’s a joke of a case design and one Apple should be ashamed to call an “Air”. It’s a stupid mini-Pro. Not an Air. It’s heavier, it’s boxy (hello IBM!), and just not iconic. I got one and I shake my head every day I look at it and grimace with “gah, this thing…”.

All the innards are nice and sexy.. it’s just the body shell that’s hideous and reeks of lazy industrial design.
Perhaps some facts would help you.

Weight
13” M1 Air 2.8 lb (1.27 kg)
13” M4 Air 2.7 lb (1.22 kg)

Thickness
13” M1 Air 0.63 in (1.6 cm)
13” M4 Air 0.44 in (1.1 cm)

Apple managed to make the newer Air both thinner and lighter than that older Air while giving is a larger screen. That’s not so lazy after all. Just because you personally like the old wedge shape doesn’t mean that this new design is bad.
