No, it wasn't just carrier deals. at least here in the USA there was a deal for unlocked iPhone air at BestBuy.

and this was from about two months ago. from reddit.
"I’ve been shopping around for a new phone for weeks, and last Monday an unlocked 256 GB Air was on sale for $849 at Best Buy, but only for a few hours. I checked again this morning and it’s the same price til the 25th. I went ahead and put it on AfterPay and I’ll be picking it up after I get off of work. I’m on an MVNO and don’t want my bill to go up, but if you’re on AT&T or Verizon you can get it for $749."

yeah the deal I wanted was a carrier deal but there was still that unlocked price that was available too. but now both deals are over.

Same I hate the Air 1 because it had so much promise but Apple compromised too much for the price they decided to charge.

Smart phones that cost $350-$400 have stereo speakers, dual cameras or more and on some occasions better battery life.

And if not, it’s got the worst battery out of the line.

So charging $999 and then $1,099 is an insult to their customers.

That said if they fix those issues and be fair with the price of $999 I’d consider it.

Also I think there was a rumour recently that Apple might discontinue the iPhone 18 altogether making it so the line is.

18e (budget)
Air 2 (mid tier replacing 18)
18 Pro and Pro Max (high tier)
Duo (super high tier)

It would make sense in my eyes as the Air is a beautiful phone with a lot of promise but its first gen in a lot of ways was worse than the 17 and the Air 2 if all issues addressed is too similar to what would be the standard 18.

Guess we’ll find out in the spring.
