I've not checked those links, but the one thing that really annoys me in the press coverage about the iPhone is that they keep going on about how expensive it is. In the cost for the phone they add in the monthly contract fees from the tariff. As if at the moment everyone gets their phones for free every month. Most people I know are on a monthly tariff which costs them money and they have a 12 month contract.

Just lazy journalism.

There's also been a lot of discussion on other sites about how poor the iPhone is following the Gadget Show review.

There was a little piece in the Sun last saturday and i mean little like 6 lines in the corner of one of the pages.

It said that the iPhone had topped Stuff magazines poll of most desired gadget to own this year and they put the price down as £595. Where the hell did they get £595 from:confused::eek:

That is just lazy journalism in my opinion not checking what the price will be on launch. It is on the o2 site how much it is going to be where had they been reading.

There's gonna be a lot of marketing on the opening weekend that I know of.

I'm not sure about the build-up to Nov 9th - but like I say, you can expect to see various bits and bobs locally over the weekend. :D

tbh i don't think their start advertising for at least a week after the release, think the fanboy purchases will carry them through for a while, once they start dying down then i think we'll see the ads starting, trying to bring in the non fanboy buyers

I think O2 will run full page adverts in the papers this weekend and then probably Thurs and Fri next week.

Like most people I hope they don't start advertising until after the iPhone is released so there are more for us :D

I hope there's enough stock like in the US though - btw what time will people start queuing? I will be going to my local O2 store at about 4pm I think but only start queuing when other people do. If there's no one there at 4pm I'll just hang around town until it's time to start

It hasn't been announced as yet, but there are 20 carphone warehouse stores which will be open until midnight on the Friday.

(Not sure which they are, but I can imagine larger stores which aren't in shopping centres)

I was on the phone to O2 Upgrades/CS earlier today and they have no information on the credit check procedure for current customers or about anything else concerning the iPhone. The girl I chatted with told me that they have as yet not had any training.

Sneeks,

The training and the credit check information I referred to earlier is being rolled out as of today, so that's probably why.

We won't have more information with regards to failed credit checks other than what I've mentioned.

I think if anything, more information about this will be known when it happens.

Sorry I don't have more, but you can imagine information at the moment is dripping through slowly

The strange thing is that as a existing O2 customer they will happily upgrade me onto any other new tariff and give me a new handset without a credit check, this will apply even if I was to fail the iPhone check.

I'm hoping this does not happen but I always tend to think 'what if' when I am looking forward to something :D

I've wondered about this as well. I can't remember the last time I got anything on credit or even had a credit check which ironically tends to count against you when you finally want to get something on credit. It will be just my luck to fail the credit check!

In the US I believe there was a way to pre-check your credit before you purchased the iPhone and then you simply entered a reference code when activating. Anyone know of a similar thing here in the UK?

Would make sense, especially for existing customers. I don't understand how doing the credit check after buying the phone is good for anyone involved!

on the advertising side, the Apple store in Birmingham has two massive iPhones in the window, both running video of the iPhone features. The staff are wearing iPhone T-Shirts with Nov. 9th on them, the macs in store are showing the countdown to release date.

Bugger all in the O2 or carephone warehouse stores.

I still think its a fairly niche product in a lot of ways. Lots of people won't have £269 to just buy a new phone. Its the month before Christmas so lots of people are being even more careful with their money. Many people won't be able to get out of their existing mobile phone contract. Many might be on PAYG at the moment and not want to or be able to afford the tariffs. Others will be happy with their own phones and iPods.

It will be really interesting to see how busy the stores are on launch, but I think this will be a steady seller over time as the above circumstances change and also as word of mouth spreads. I think the launch will be one for the Mac fans as much as anyone.
You make some very good points and I believe that your conclusions are correct. We'll know for sure in just 8 days.
