I was waiting on this, but in all honesty, the iPhone is a little bulky to run with I found, so I bought a Nano and the armband to use with the Nike kit.

Ah yes, but connecting Nike+ via an external accessory and having it directly integrated into the iPhone hardware ( as it is in the iPod Touch ) are very different things. This would still give the edge to the iPod line version of the Nike+.

How? That was the way the nano has done it from 2006. With the option for external accessories able to communicate to the iPhone wirelessly and also through a direct dock connection like the nano's Nike+ sensor - don't the lines between the hardware inside, and hardware outside blur?

yeah, it's a little bulky. but it would be nice to have your phone with you when running, just in case something happens to you when you're out on the trails

The way I read the article you posted was that the Nike+ integration would find it's way to the iPhone via an external dongle which to me is very different than the internal integration we've seen a la the iPod Touch.

I would love to have nike+ on my iphone, I'm sure if you get a nice arm strap for it you wont even feel the bulkyness. I really hope they make this happen at WWDC, syncing my runs without having to go to the computer would be great.

let's hope that we won't need the dongle, just like the ipod touch

exactly. and they could even integrate GPS with it, but i doubt that they will.

I'd say with the Bonjour and BT, Apple has no need now for any dongle in that regard - manufacturers inc. Nike can play with what they've got (or will have hehe)

Still await this - Nike+ for the iPhone 3GS - but no word on iTunes updates, no word on Nike+ integration into iTunes, no word really on hardware accessories beyond TomTom's dock/holder - is the Nike+ sensor it?!

well at least we have nike+ support now! better late than never i guess. i wonder if it's only with the 3GS though?

According to my iPhone 3G after upgrading to 3.0 the "Accessory is Not Supported" when I plug in the Nike+ dongle. ANNOYING!

I still think either we'll find out more next week (and presumably if not then, then around the new Touch update, though that could be around the iPhone 3GS release too). For all the ballyhoo about the accessory framework, they're ruddy schtum about it. Here's hoping the info will pass from the Made for iPod and works with iPhone Group to the iPhone developer section - makes no sense to have them separate, as many apps will soon be designed to be an accompanyment for a hardware accessory (e.g. see TomTom dock and the TomTom SatNav app etc).

Anyone have any experience running with an iPhone? I never thought I would (just thought I would stick with my shuffel) but with the 3gs and Nike + I am seriously considering doing this but would like to hear if anyone else has been running or working out with there iphone and if so what arm band/case they use.

Which case do you use?

Now that the new iPhone has Nike + I am seriously considering getting it just for this but am a little concerned going from running with a shuffel to an iPhone. But I guess if I get a good case/armband it wouldnt be that big of a deal.

Isn't bad at all. I usually run with it in a pocket/hand, works fine (RunKeeper Pro works like a charm, tough i've only done up to 10k with it, the battery life is good enough for a marathon).

EDit - looks like PhatRat - and Vock - the group who said Nike and Apple infringed on their patents over Nike+ has a named joint patent with them from 4 months back. Has Apple been working on sport sensor tech in secret? Or is this just patents to write and file away?

Sorry, as of the 3.0 GM no dice. At this point I don't think they have any plans on supporting Nike+ on the iPhone 3G.

That's the strange thing - couldn't the 3G do this via it's BT anyway? Otherwise, aren't they just opening up the market for competitors to market for the x million off 3Gs out there? It's like it's falsely limiting the feature, and saying it requires it inbuilt.

Yes. I use an armband. There are several well-rated bands on Amazon. Works well.

dang. i can still hope that it'll be there with the final release of 3.0, but probably not.

Have you considered trying runkeeper? That offers pretty much the same functionality as Nike+ and doesn't require mucking about with extra accessories as it just uses the built in GPS. There is even a free version of it that is just supported by ads but retains almost all the functionality of the full ad-free version (the only bit it doesn't have is the voice prompts telling you how far and how fast you're running).
