I use my iphone while lifting weights and its fallen out of my pocket numerous times without any damage. I don't use a case either. You have to be reasonable, obviously if you drop a barbell on your iphone it will break--but so will a nano. Many gyms have a rubberized floor and when the phone is likely to fall is when you're pretty close to the ground anyway.

It's so funny how people treat their iphones like they are made of eggshells.

I'll tell ya what is slick. My motorola S9 stereo blue tooth headset and iPhone 2.0 with AD2P. Oh, and a treadmill. If one thing was going to kill my iphone was swinging or catching my headphone wire and launching it across the room.

Power lunch: Treadmill, iPhone 3.0 and headset. I can watch video, listen to music, answer emails, texts, surf the web...and work out...all in my own little word with no wires!

I can walk around to about 30 feet and still get a signal.

Risk factor: Sweat getting into the headset. Could be a real downer. Hopefully new 'work out' style head phones are in the near future.

I took my 3G to the gym once. It didn't break or anything, but it was a bit too bulky for me to carry around while working out.

Now I use a Shuffle, but I wouldn't go bigger than a Nano. ;)

Just wondering how many of you use your iphone to workout at the gym? Do you find it too bulky when doing weights/cardio? I have a nano and find it works well, but will be getting the new iphone. What I cant decide is if I should get a shuffle for the gym, or just use the iphone for it all...

comments? Thanks.

I'd say don't use the iPhone at the gym, not because I think you'll break it or drop a weight on it or something, but because I don't think you want to be constantly pulling it out of your pocket (and touching the screen) in order to simply change tracks. It's so much easier to have something tactile to just press from your pocket. On that basis, especially if you wear gloves, I'd say just get a shuffle. Besides, with all the sweat you'll probably void your warranty by triggering the water sensors or something. :p

After watching my work Blackberry hit the treadmill and fly across the gym, I decided to leave my iphone in the car and I bought a new shuffle. The shuffle is more than adequate for the gym.

I have an iPhone but I like to use my smaller Nano at the gym. I'm actually considering getting a new tiny pod because it could just clip to my t-shirt. The only thing holding me back is I like my over the head headphones as the pods don't stay in my ears at the gym. So soon as that is possible I will switch. Sometimes smaller is better.

:D Sorry.. :p

I've seen a lot of people take their iPhones in the gym but another reason I don't is because I fear that when I would put it down, the iPhone would get crushed in the exercise machine or something.

Or you can just use the button on your headphones to skip tracks and don't have to take it out of your pocket at all. 2 taps for next, 3 for previous.

Then don't set it ON the machine, lol. Keep it in your pocket.

i use it at the gym all the time but it really depends on what you're doing or if u have some sort of arm band.

if u don't have an arm band, it's no problem with most cardio i've done. but any exercise where you have to lie down on a bench, you'll probably want to take the phone out and lay it on the floor since it'll fall out of your pocket.(probably).

definitely use headphones that have the clicker too, soooooo much better than reaching for your phone to change next song. i thought about using a shuffle in the past but i need my phone with me all the time so why carry both? plus answering phone calls while listening to music is a breeze.

edit: note i don't have an armband. i just usually keep it in my pocket.

I'm working under the assumption that he doesn't have those kind of headphones, which most iPhone owners probably don't because click-able or not, Apple makes terrible earbuds. You also don't have to take a regular iPod out of your pocket either - just reach in, find the button with your finger tips and click. This is, of course, one of the shortcomings of touch screen technology - you almost always have to look at what you're doing while doing it.

I don't find any difficulty using the iPhone during workouts. When it's clipped to your waist it's not noticeable.

95% of iPhone users I've seen at my gym are using the Apple earbuds, so I wouldn't say most iPhone owners don't use them. No Apple does not make the best earbuds but I find them suitable for the gym.. I don't need mega bass or anything when working out, just music that can play loudly.

I mean most people use the regular buds (the ones that don't have any volume or track controller on the cord) - so yes, I agree with you. My post was in response to the post about people getting the buds that have the click-controls on the cord. I said that most people don't have those kind of buds, and even if they were to get them they're not that great anyway.

a belt holster clipped on to your gym shorts or an arm band work great in the gym for iPhone/iPod Touch. I use mine all the time, no problems.

I use my iPhone at the gym every time I go. I normally have it in an InCase Slider, but I switch it to an arm band case that I got at the Apple Store. Doesn't get in the way and it doesn't weigh enough for me to really notice it.
