It should be up to the market regulators to enforce that, not the individual companies. Especially when it could be used to kill the second-hand market
That's essentially what is happening. However, more power to Tesla if they can enforce it. If one doesn't like the terms, don't buy the product. As with an iphone a Cybertruck is a lifestyle product.

EU should develop also a punishment system for iPhone users avoiding all shops except Apple Store otherwise their plan can’t work smoothly!

Thanks EU, but I have more than enough applets in Apple Store . side loading ? I ’m not interested
You're free to stay within the App Store...

...or misinterpret the purpose of this regulation entirely.

About time! Thanks EU.

Hope it comes to the UK… lol

And for those who are about to wail and moan: don’t use it. Simple!
This simply isn’t true. Inevitably, there will be some mission critical app that decides to not use the App Store that you will have to enable app sideloading in order to install it. And the big companies that want more of your data and don’t want to be limited by Apple’s privacy restrictions will likely remove their apps from the App Store and only offer them via sideloading. Arguing people will be able to not enable sideloading doesn’t really hold up when that happens. Scammers trick the non-technologically literate to grant them access to their computers via VNC software, how much more of these kinds of scams will exist when scammers can convince people to install malicious apps that will be less obviously scammy than granting them full access to their computers…

The walls are still there. There just happens to be something on the other side. Stay in the garden if you want to. Or don’t.

Every other platform out there allows side loading, or as it’s more commonly called, installing. And the sky hasn’t fallen. So bored with the drama and narcissism around the side loading issue. I miss the good old days when tech fans weren’t so fearful.
OK, so should be warning as if something after side loading came wrong- in such case warranty will be terminated even for 1 day old iPhone

By choice. I don't need any new apps, and I'm no longer low-income.

I have zero app subscriptions and I haven't bought an app in a couple years. So good luck with whatever your selling.
Me the same, I have about 80 applets in 10 years on iPhone- I bought them and paid full version without advertising-don’t need any junk

People keep comparing this to MacOS but don't seem to be smart enough to realize the data on your phone is significantly more sensitive than the data on your MacBook.
Or maybe that's just simply not true for everyone. Personally, I'd say what's on my Mac is at least as sensitive, if not more so, than the data on my phone, not to mention that there's a lot more of it on my Mac.

I wonder how many will install questionable apps and then blame Apple for data loss. You will see how many people will say that iPhones are no longer as secure.
I can already see the headlines in the manipulative media :)
That would be stupid. Android already has APKs and if Apple implements something like that(and isn't deliberately making it an easy entrance for viruses), it shouldn't be an issue.

Good and well ofcourse, until developers of important / required apps start removing their apps from the Apple App Store and require you to use theirs.

For example I know for a fact that Meta is working on an App Store of their own. I don't want Meta's "privacy" on my phone. And getting my family, friends and collogues all to switch to iMessage is quite impossible. Also I don't want iMessage to connect to Meta because of the same issue!

Because of this I am looking to import my next iPhone from the US. Or change my account to the US if it's connected to the account.

And before you say "that will never happen". It already IS happening with PC games. Epic gives a lot of money to (indie) game developers to exclusively release their games on the Epic Games Store which is filled with Chinese (Tencent) spyware. And this goes as far as these companies removing their games off of Steam or other PC games outlets.
They haven't done it on MacOS. Or the Play Store. Meta is shooting themselves in the foot if they move it to there. And most people won't go through the effort of sideloading.

Absolutely this^

The majority of iphone users are not geeks, and couldn't give a flying rats backside about 'sideloading' or 'installing' or whatever you want to call it, and probably wouldn't have a clue how to do it (or do it safely) anyway.

This absolutely puts the security and privacy of iOS at risk...I can just see the future headlines. As usual the EU makes more bad decisions.
Companies will likely stay on the App Store. Unlike Android, most of the userbase is on the App Store.

Apple should take a stand & stop selling iPhones & iPads in the EU until this provision is withdrawn. Enough of big government sticking their noses into to private businesses & trying to tell them how to operate.
Tim Cook will never come back to Apple. Investors will pretty much pull off a coup if he does that. Also, it's not doing anything bad. The government should step in when a company refuses to do something that should be included on a phone. If Apple cripples video sent between iPhones and Androids, the government should mandate that they improve it if there is no viable alternative. If Apple allowed sideloading, it would be a PR victory, just like USBC.

Lol what relevant game is only available on Epic? Everyone eventually gets back on steam because it provides a superior experience for users even if more expensive than Epic store.

This is all Apple needs to do. Have an AppStore that is better than the others.
Having all the killer apps on it would make sideloading useless for most. Apple could do this.

It wouldn’t. You can have all the killer apps you want, but if they are crippled compared to other stores won’t save it.

Just take the mac AppStore and steam. Apple had the killer apps and still succeeded in suffocating itself by self sabotage

Except it already is an issue on all non-iOS platforms. Malware is a trillion dollar industry.

MacOS and the Play Store don't have the same privacy protections as the App Store, so Meta has different incentives on those platforms.

Most of the userbase is on the Play Store for Android.

They don't have a store on MacOS, because the market isn't big enough on Mac. They don't have a store on Android, because they would want to unify their mobile efforts. (so not until they can also do so on iOS)

On Windows it's not necessary. Also you might not know, but Whatsapp is the most used communication app in Europe. Above even iMessage and SMS.

They might absolutely force users to a "Meta Store" if that means they can sell more ads. It's not 100% sure that it's going to happen, but it's also not 0%. And that is scary enough.

Only two things that could help us:
1. Meta is also a gatekeeper, and especially with Whatsapp.
2. GDPR might block this.

But that would be relying on the EU to fix problems caused by the EU.
