While returning it remind yourself the U.S. owes China BILLIONS in bail-out money they've loaned us.

I'd suggest tucking a couple of twenties in the box (your share of the debt) when you take it back.

As an aside for everyone else, aren't you grateful the iPhone was designed in California and assembled in China? I'd hate to see what they'd be like if it was the other way around.

Why not use those twentys and buy an american made product instead? Maybe they woulndt have to bail us out if we supported our own economy.

I agree with you in theory, but the down and dirty of it is America doesn't assemble the iPhone. China does.
I wanted the iPhone.

Done and done.

If electronics products were made in the USA, they'd be twice the price and half the quality. Hence the design being carried out in the USA, Japan, Europe etc. and the manufacture in China, Taiwan,e tc.

Then why even mention "designed in califorina by apple" does that mean the quality of the design is not as good, so if it were designed in china it would be better?
Yes, building it in the US would drive up the price, but it would give more people jobs who then could afford to buy more stuff.
It cost apple a little over 200 to build the iPhone, then we get shafted and get it for 700 here no wonder the company makes a good profit.

I agree with the OP and others about supporting US made goods, but honestly some things you can't buy american.... electronics (consumer electronics) is one. I remember when I bought my first Apple product, an iPod Mini, and on the box it said, "Designed by Apple in California". I thought for a second it was actually made here or assembled here :D

Rubbish, if the manufacturing cost is 200 bucks, then 700 for the final consumer unit in the shops is fantastic value for money.

The dealer and Apple need a profit margin, and think of the cash Apple spend on marketing, etc.

I used my experience of various American cars as a basis for my comments...

Same problem the UK car industry faced - lazy, overpaid, striking workers producing dated, badly designed inferior cars.

Yeah, you're right about that. Unions had their use at one time, but they've messed up a lot of our industries with their insane demands (and no, I'm not going to argue with anyone about unions). I worked at one company where they were told to make a certain amount of a product for their shift, and what they'd do is make that amount and then stop for the day. That didn't include the 2 hours getting ready for the day with their coffee and cigarettes and then the 2 hours getting ready to leave at the end of the day taking a shower and lining up to leave at the gate (I'm not exaggerating).

Please, no Apple employees on this thread, your subjectivity would be suspect.

I don't work for Apple. But I've been in business for many years, and know full well that the cost of manufacturing a product is only a small part of the overall cost, and doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the retail price point.

OOOH!! Retail Price Point!!! Fancy business catch phrase for how much it cost the consumer. Yep, you definitely work for Apple, perhaps marketing?

What the hell are you talking about? You don't sell products at cost, that's common sense. It may pay Apple $200 in parts and labor to build an iPhone, but they still need to pay the people who designed the hardware and software, pay for all of the marketing, and pay for people at the Apple Store who will sell the phone to you. Then there's also the people who answer your tech support calls who need a paycheck. And freight/shipping costs to get the iPhone from the factory in China to the retail stores, and many more costs associated with the product. Anyone who's passed Business 101 with a D- knows there's more in a product's MSRP than the actual cost of putting that product together. And no, I don't work for Apple either, I just happened to have passed middle school.

ItsaA matter of integrity

Well Apple is a US based Co., the fact that they mention that it has been designed in the us is to let the public know that they still active in the USA psychologically, and it makes it look good!!! Assembled in China that's what its written there not made in china!!! ;) Thats a huge difference for the consumer!!

Manipulation thats it!!

Also keep in mind that Apple may pay $200 in hardware and other things to make an iPhone but there is still a bit more costs involved tht have to be covered like shipping, designers, publicity ... etc!!! there is always a reason why they look somewhere else to cut costs!!
