9to5mac points to a new job listing from Sensis, the search engine division of Telstra, Australia's largest mobile carrier.

Sensis is looking for an iPhone developer for their Australia-only search engine:
We’re looking for a BA with a technical front-end UI background to help us design cutting-edge search applications for the iPhone.
9to5mac reasonably suggests that this is because the iPhone is coming to Australia. No timeframe is known.

This might just simply be their reaction to the release of the SDK. I highly doubt this is anything Telstra/iPhone release specific, it would be them trying to get a jump on other local search providers.

Then again, we always be hopeful :D

Telstra...Oh man that sucks.

If Telstra gets the deal, Australia will let a collective moan.

Thinking of emigrating actually, but know nothing about the telecom market out there. I've got a UK iPhone, so if push comes to shove I'll just unlock it if the service proposition out there is guff.

I already have an iPhone running on Telstra. Got it at a cheap price, I have a cheap plan, nothing like what telstra will offer. Except I can't compete with internet wherever I am with unlimited data plans. That would be awesome.

I'll let out a woohoo, buy it, and then promptly jailbreak it. It'll just be nice to have them of a decent price and the possibility of a warranty.

edit: I was checking out the progress of the Sydney Apple store last week. Looks like they've finished putting the glass panelling on the outside of the store. From what I could see on the George street side it's going to be great. I assume once that's completed it's a matter of doing the internal fit out. Can't wait to see it once the covers come off. And I'm still hoping for a simultaneous store opening and iPhone release-extravaganza :).

Telstra?? Oh dear god...please tell me this doesn't include NZ (overseas people tend to slot us together). I want Vodafone instead *crosses fingers*

I was almost celebrating at the sound of the iPhone coming down under...

Then i see "Telstra"... well i think i'm just going to have to jailbreak it...

But it'll probably be expensive.. (heads to Hong Kong or China)

Perhaps so, however it is not like big old Telstra to be so up to speed with new technology or in this case the SDK.

It's cos there's big bucks at stake. Bucks that will only come with an Apple/Telstra deal.

Plus, the job offer is for 2-3 months. This coincides with the iPhone software 2.0 release in June

Well the stores not meant to open till June right?
And iPhone 2 is due to out in June.

Just hoping not Telstra.
Wouldn't Telstra get Apple to write Apps for them
or help the find and train some people for them?
If they had the contract that is.

I assume it will come to Telstra when it does hit Australia, but this article adds little proof in my mind. Sensis has always been somewhat independent from Telstra and would need to have an Yellow/White Pages app on the iPhone even if Telstra were not the carrier, in order to try to maintain their phone search advantage. So they are just out looking for a dev to help with that app.

I was thinking the same thing, the Sydney apple super store (all glass staircases and all) should open mid year ie June. Nicely timed for the 3G Iphone launch. They will need (well it would be nice) a much publicised hero product (ie iphone 2 3g) to launch the store and the iphone with a splash in Australia.

The planets are aligning it seems. The clues are so obvious now, I'm certain we'll have iphone 2 in a couple of months or so.

This will be the first apple store in the Southern Hemisphere. When you think of it the iphone isn't available oficialy in the Southern half of the planet...not good

Man..if telstra gets the deal, all we're going to do is jailbreak and go with optus or something.

tel$ra. Bloody hell. The biggest rip off merchants in telecommunications (it's why I still have shares). Wouldn't be surprised if the minimum monthly was close to $100.

I will just jail brake it. Anyone but tel$tra.

edit: Have to agree with earlier comments though: this is just a commercial directory service wanting to build apps for the iphone. The fact that it is owned by Telstra prompts the scary headline.

I will probably buy the iPhone even if it is Telstra. It's just such a groovy piece of tech.

Telstra will get the iPhone unless a 3G model comes out...and yes i hope it's soon

for those that don't know, telstra was the government telecom company in Oz until it was sold off with all the other amenities. consequently they own all of the infrastructure and can do as little as they want while still maintaining profits

coincedently, no infrastructure has been built in Oz in 30 years...

please be true, please be true, please be true, please be true...
Telstra is a really good phone network, although I like 3 better

Who has more subscribers in Aus?

Apple tend to go with the network with the biggest numbers.

Of course Tel**** is gonna get the iPhone. Sucks, i know, but was always gonna be that way,.

This is great news though, I'm thinking iPhone2.0 June, Australia gets iPhone shortly after.

Yipeeeeee! (and my current phone contract is up in August, so yay!)
