Of course Tel**** is gonna get the iPhone. Sucks, i know, but was always gonna be that way,.

I don't think Telstra will go for it as the iPhone would compete and cannabalise their own product offerings:

Telstra had BigPond music; iPhone has iTunes Store

BigPond Music is in .wma format; iPhone/iPod music is in .mp3 format

Telstra has BigPond Movies; iPhone has iTunes Store

Telstra has 3G network, iPhone is not 3G (at the moment)

If you look at all the carriers who offer the service in other countries, its not usually the biggest or main carrier that has the iPhone contract (am I correct?)

Legal issues: the nature of the restricted iPhone plans ie: you can ONLY use this product on only THIS network sounds very close to "third line forcing", and according to Section 52 of the Trade Practices Act - is illegal.

Will Apple be required to sell unlocked iPhones by law??

And anyway, all I have said is moot as the potential price of any plans is going to be so exhorbitant that not many people are going to be able to afford it anyway. There's no such thing as "unlimited" in Australia; every byte of data, upload and download is counted and chargeable!!

On the other hand, wouldn't you want to be a fly on the wall and watch Telstra and Apple shirt-fronting each other as they try and screw each other over the iPhone deal. LOL :D

There are ways around that.
Maybe the easiest and maybe strangest would be for AppleAust to be the "phone company", Selling you a bundle of phone and plan, which has been used a number of times to avoid "third line forcing" issues.

They could buy wholesale from Telstra or any of the others, and then really just act as a billing company much like so many other "phone companies".
Which might be interesting as Apple could then organise their own provisions for international bandwidth the driving cost for most internet plans in this country.

Or they could just sell and unlocked one for more just like EU countries.

Telstra

I know Telstra is crap, but do they know that?? i rekon it would be a good idea for Jobbs to make a new phone network, or buy another phone company and design it just for iPhone. I mean there is obviously going to be more thing to come out for iPhone and apple all together and it would be worth while in the end, with all the ipods they have sold in the past its bound to get even bigger.:)

Get ready for Apple Chatswood!

It's coming sooner than I thought. Not many details at the moment, but there's a big black Apple logo in front of the store. I'll post a picture when I can...

--- I love my iPod touch ---

BTW I talked to one of the staff members from the (official) Optus Store and she said (if I promised not to tell anyone - whoops) that it would be out in June and on the Optus network exclusively. She also had a few iPhones unopened out the back, but wouldn't show me them. Sounds pretty solid, right? Would love to hear (or rather, read) your replies... :apple::apple::apple:

Sounds like she was making fun of you. Why would they store iPhones 'out the back' if they're not going on sale for two more months?

On the hush-hush

It is extremely likely, in spite of what would be best for us consumers, that Australia will get a technology dump of 2.5G iPhones from Telstra.

Sorry.

Why do you say that? The rumored launch date (June) corresponds with the rumored date for the 3G version.

It would be a daft move on Apple's part as well. We're not quite as technologically backwards as the US (at least as far as mobile technology is concerned). The GSM phones simply wouldn't cut it over here.

Edit: Sorry, that wasn't an attempt to be insulting, it's just that launching a new 2G phone over here would be very, very silly.
