Well I for one would be very happy for iPhone to be coming to Telstra. Yes Telstra are a bit more expensive than the other 'budget' carriers, but they have the best mobile network in the world (officially). There was always going to be a premium with the iPhone so why not have it on the best possible network. Furthermore if I am not mistaken AT&T's new 3G network is 850 which means Next G iPhone for us! I really like the idea of getting nice fast browsing etc wherever I am rather than just the metro areas. Also if we do get lumped with the 2G iPhone do you really want to use that on GPRS? Telstra are the only providers with an EDGE network... So who is slow on the technology uptake? Telstra had the first and only 2.5G network and the first 3.5G network. They also provide a heap of other services that the budget guys don't think are important.

I pay a premium for my computers and buy Apple because I get a better experience. I do the same for my mobiles.

By the way this was posted from my Telstra service on an unlimited data plan!

Australian store down

I don't know if anyone has noticed but the Australian Apple Store is down at the moment... Seems rather odd

Not only Australian apple store, but also all Asian (SG, JP, SoKor, HK, TW) apple stores are down. I smell iPhone in the air :D

Perhaps they're retro-fitting the site to be like the US apple store site.

Cool, I'll be moving over to Sydney in about a month :) It sounds like I'll be getting an iPhone sooner than expected; and I noticed a job description I would fit in ;)

ps. NL store is still up and running. Must be Australia / Southern Hemisphere specific updates then?

[edit]too bad; it's in Melbourne, and it's only a 2-3 month position[/edit]

Now I realise how much of a whinging bunch the Aussies really are, who cares which network you're on, all Telco are there to make money, Voda, Optus, 3, even OneTel I've been to them all in the last 12 years, but Telstra is still the most realiable and not too much BS marketing behind all of it's plans.

I've ben running my 1G iPhone on Telstar for 6 months now, no probs at all, just waiting for 2G and then I can pass it on to the wife, she's got my iTouch ;) but it's no fun(phone)

Yeh so if telstra gets the deal. I wont be getting one. As many other people wont. Telstra is hated in AUS. Scums

Telstra are hideously expensive even though they do have the best network size and speed. I'll pay what I have to to get the iPhone but for our friends from the US, this is what we poor Aussies pay for data:

Pay As You Go - $2 per MB

Occasional User Pack - $5 per month for 5MB then $1 per MB after that

Frequent User Pack - $10 per month for 20MB then $1 per MB after that

Heavy User Pack - $29 per month for 80MB then $1 per MB after that

That's our choices with Telstra - and those rates are ON TOP OF our monthly plan fee - which is currently around $80 for most phones, wouldn't surprise me at all if the iPhone is $100 a month.

Let's see how much data we all run up when we start using our iPhones all the time.

PS - US dollar is almost 1:1 on the Aussie at the moment so just read those prices like you were paying them in Greenbacks.

If I'm not mistaken most Vodafone cap plans have unlimited data, so that could be an option.

I'm on a $79 cap, I frequently use google maps, gmail and general browsing on my phone rather than use vodafone live and I've never been billed for data.

There is going to be more than one Apple Store!

This is fantastic, I don't have to travel into the worst driving areas in Australia to get to a store. But in typical Apple fashion, they have chosen this second store in the up market Chatswood Chase.

By the way, does anyone here live around Chatswood/North Shore?

I'm in the northern beaches. The Chatswood store is going in the new Chatswood Chase redevelopment which is still at the drawing stage. Don't hold your breath on that one. A while off yet.

Telstra was always going to get the iPhone. I heard from a source in Apple Australia that Telstra's Sol Trujillo went to Cupertino for meetings. The iPhone would be a perfect vehicle to promote their Next G network, which is impressive, even if Telstra themselves are scumbags.

I live on the North Shore and they've actually started on the new portion of the centre. Have been for at least a month now - redirecting traffic for the car park and doing demolition of the adjacent buildings....but it's definitely a way off.

Although if Telstra a still front runner.
It would explain why they Fitouted out a store with lots of space, timber floors and staff, and absolutely no customers.
Right across the road from the new Apple store in glass cube.

Darrel Lea is going to make a killing the day they release the iPhone in Oz

Telstra - not a bad thing...

In my optinion Telstra are the best setup to offer the iPhone. Best coverage, best 3g network etc. I know a lot of their plans are expensive compared to the others, but i can see things being a bit different with the iPhone. I would put money on them creating a special data plan just for the iPhone, just like they have with some other popular products. HIPTOP anyone.... Telstra offer a $30 unlimed data plan for the HIPTOP, includes all data, sms, email and IM messaging.

Would a $30 unlimited data plan be so bad?

Awesome! I will be able to fly off to Sydney from Wellington to get some serious support from Apple. Awesome, also good reason to visit family ;)

Yep absolutely right. The $30 unlimited data plan is perfect for the iPhone, it would be best if they included some calls for an extra 10 or 20 dollars, otherwise I'll just use that plan combined with my 3 mobile plan.

Telstra isn't so bad, no-one else is offering something as sweet as that 30 plan which is unlimited. Altho on three for $3 P/M I have unlimited MMS to anyone on three, which is most of my friends, so I can crank out literally thousands of messages each month for $3 (17000 since last march, to be exact)

I have a question. If Telestra gets the iPhone would I be able to buy it then put a different Telestra SIM card (I'm thinking pre-paid since I don't need data on the go, wifi will do) in it or will that require jailbreaking? Since it's still Telestra, it wouldn't need unlocking, would it?

I must be on the EXTRA Heavy User Pack of $59 per month for 200MB you conveniently forgotten to quote, plenty unless I surf all the time over telstra network - which I don't as I have plenty of Wifi around me  They also continue to go up but unless you get sh*tloads of spam from email downloads then it's not something most that has an iPhone can't afford
