I'm sort of in your situation; I'm gonna be 18 next week and will probably get an iPhone the week after or so. I was probably going to put it on the parent's credit card and then cut them a check, that way everybody's happy.

However, I'm holding off a couple of weeks *just in case* Macworld sheds some light on updates.

Just thought it might be a good suggestion to wait and see what happens.

If you don't mind, and no offense, why do you need an iPhone when you're only 15? Besides the iPod part of it.

If he wants one, I see nothing wrong with him buying one.

My sister used cash, two gift cards, and a credit card to buy her iPhone. All they want is some of the purchase on a credit card so they can log who is buying iPhones and not activating them on AT&T. As long as some of it is on credit, you should be fine.

Well, keep your fingers crossed! Thanks for everything, everybody.

Sounds like you have it all worked out. Come back and let us know how it goes, and how you like your iPhone.

At 15, I'm impressed that you knew enough to check all of this out. You did alot of research, and were smart enough to know you could have an issue at the store.

Nice to see the MacRumors forum community helping out too...

If they don't let you buy it the first time just try back again the next day or so and ask a different person :). You will eventually find someone who will help you.

I have figured out all the nice people at my local Apple Store, so whenever I need to go get servicing on my iphone/macbook/mac I always call up in advance and make sure that the nicer, more helpful mac geniuses are working that day.

Get a debit card to make the purchase. I'm 17 and bought my iPhone this way. I'm almost sure, though, that you will be able to use your gift cards and your dad's credit card.

first of all, why do people waste so much energy worrying about these types of issues when a quick call or visit to apple will answer the question?

Second, the op should get his own credit card and then these issues go away. I'm sure a parent can cosign the application and then he can responsibly build a credit history that will make life easier later on.

I don't need an iPhone. I just wanted one, so I saved up (without help from by parents, btw...) and bought one. In fact, I'm typing on it right now. I don't think anyone really needs an iPhone, its just nice not to have to carry around an iPod and a cell phone. (and to have them in a device which is better at being both things than an actual cell phone and ipod are.)

My experience with buying an iphone with cash: it didn't happen. A clerk was ringing me up, when another clerk walked by and said "you can't do that." (That was after asking three clerks if I could, all of which said yes.) The guy who rung me up folded under pressure, and cancelled the transaction. Luckily, my dad had enough money on his card to pay for it, so I just paid him back. I think the only reason he did it is because we drove for an hour to the nearest Apple store, and he didn't want to go through that trip for nothing.

Anyways, I now have an iPhone, and I love it!
