It's called installer error

This happened to my friends car
He thought he would be slick by wiring his car charger directly to a "always on" 12V line in his camry so he could charge his phone even if the car was off

A week later he tells me that after going over a bump his dash starts to smoke.
Luckily he realized it was probably something he did recently and unplugged his battery.
Called me and I found his handy work (image below)
Basically the charger was connected to a live 12V line ( that is always on, ie like being connected to the battery) without using a fuse >_<

Not sure if anything else was damaged , but I bet this is what happened with the OP car

This is a note from a local chemical plant employee that had a bad experience with results that could have been tragic. This is also a good reminder that all garages should be equipped with working smoke detectors or fire alarms.

Just saw this post, our suburban also caught on fire a little over a month ago. And right now we noticed our new expeditions charger was super hot and had that burning smell to it. Same ihome charger brand we used in our previous car that burned. This isbwhat our vehicle looked like afterwards.

I hate the plug in lighter chargers as they have no fuse. The only fuse there is for the lighter and that fuse is way too big for phone charging.

Anyone mention the brand name and models of the charger that created this fire?

Fake news, "chemical plant employee"... yeah right, pour chemicals on the phone, light a match, and boom.

Trolls need to get a life.

I have a 2010 Vauxhall Insignia, sells in the US as the Buick Regal i think, and it has a USB port under the flip up arm rest. Had the car for 3 and a half years and for a good 3 years of that there has been a non Apple USB cable plugged in all the time so i can just jump in and plug the phone in if i wish. At no point has the car burst into flames so there is something not quite right here. I've even at times whilst on road trips left it with my old iPhone 5 plugged in constantly whilst using it as an iPod and that didnt cause any issues.

More to the story here than just leaving a cable plugged in to the 12v outlet.

Most likely difficult to find details about a vague story from 8 years ago.
