It already is affordable.

Amen. $1 a day. Thats it. Maybe it seems like a lot when its a one time payment of $30, but think of how often you needlessly spend money during the day. Or, take $1, and set it aside each day. Then when the bill is due, you have $30 set aside already.

Why No Data Plan?

Data does not have to come over 3G - my son is on campus with WiFi everywhere. I live in a community with Wifi everywhere around the city. We both have iPhone 2Gs, which, until recently, were without a data plan.

AT&T has decided that ALL iPhones require a data plan, regardless of whether you paid full retail ($600) or the subsidized 3g/3gs price of $199. It sucks!

I was planning on upgrading to a 3gs, giving my 2g to my other son, but not if I have to pay for a data plan, when WiFi is everywhere here. This is why I bought the 2g, as you could shut off the data plan. I even shut it off on my data plan on the AT&T configuration page of myAccount. Now that option is gone as well.

I had confirmed the ability to shut the data plan off, many times with the AT&T customer support. Now they say that the CS staff was "misinformed".

BULL! If I have to pay for services that I don't want or need, I want the subsidized price. Where do I go to get my $400 per 2g iPhone (the difference between the $600 and the $200 3g/s subsidized price).

The iPhone experience, software, and iTunes ease of use, make the iPhone an unparalleled device, but I am seriously considering leaving AT&T after 9 years, because of this debacle. It is no wonder that people hate AT&T - customer service like this is sickening.

I heard they want to make it more affordable any idea when this is happening.

What's the point of an iPhone without a Data Plan? You can't check emails, you can't check weather, you can't get visual voicemail, you can't use Safari, you can't update apps, you can't download apps, you can't use apps such as iMob etc.. online.. et al.

Yeah you can over WiFi but you might as well just get an iPod Touch then and some other cell phone if you have to be hooked up to WiFi to use it.

Yeah the iPhone is cool and yeah a lot of people want it who can't afford $30+ extra a month, but without the data you lose the whole iPhone experience to the point that it's not worth the switch.

It's a SMART PHONE!!! You have the same "debacle" (bad term) going on with BlackBerrys. A smart phone requires data to be worth anything. Without data it's a dumb phone with a fancy look.

It is sickening, and should be illegal. This was already discussed ad nauseum (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/741909/), complete with all the idiots who don't realize that the iPhone without data still has the ability of being a cell phone (unlike the iPod Touch). Also included, are the idiots who think the data plan was required on all iPhones from the start regardless of subsidization or not.

Maybe not worth it to you, but to others it is. Try to think beyond yourself, so many people don't have that ability now-a-days it seems. The only thing you lose with data is network abilities while mobile, and many apps save data for off line use. Anyways, with the amount of wifi hotspots around, if you do need a data connection you can typically pull over to an AT&T store, Starbucks, etc to get one.

Solution? Get an iPod Touch (as others have said) so you can use your WiFi thats "everywhere", and a normal cell phone. Problem solved.

From my experience push will not work properly without a data plan. I just added the data plan back to my phone and im getting all push notifications instantly. A side note, even though on my account it showed iphone, on the ATT reps computer it showed I was using my nokia phone, I had to provide my Iphone IMEI number to the rep.
