I never turn my cell phone off on airplanes and it has never caused a problem...so just go ahead and use it anyway. :p

Airlines don't allow cellphone use on planes because of crowd-control purposes. They just keep up with the "radio communication interference" lie to instill the fear of death into passengers in order to get those phones off.

If they ask you to put your iPhone away during "Pirates" just ask how one is supposed to dial without "keys fixed in plastic."

In this day and age, anytime you fail to follow the rules on an airplane it is stupid. You act slightly suspicious and before you know it they're landing the plane and escorting you off in handcuffs ...Having a cellphone powered on mid-flight is especially risky for two reasons: 1) it's illegal to begin with, and 2) they may believe that you're using it to remotely activate explosives.

...And quite frankly, I don't see how you could honestly forget, considering that the airlines remind you repeatedly.
Hmm, the 'they could suspect you of terrorism' is actually a semi-valid point in this ridiculous country. Then again, I doubt I'm the only person who forgets.

FYI, I have never USED my cell phone on the airplane (unless before takeoff/after landing). It's not out. It's sitting in my bag untouched during the entire flight. So I don't think they would suspect me of remotely activating explosives, unless I'm somehow remotely accessing my phone psychically...

As for why I forget, on the airlines I've traveled, they don't say cell phones specifically, but refer to 'laptops and other electronic devices,' which apparently my brain does not natively take to include cell phones.

The FCC and FAA beg to differ.

Yu don't seem to be interpreting this correctly. ...Some airlines will allow the use of cellphone ONLY when in 'airplane mode' and other airlines ban the use of cell phones COMPLETELY.

No airline will allow you to use the wireless functions of a cellphone mid-flight.

Yes EricNau, but as I stated before, the iPhone isn't just a phone, but it is also an iPod. So if you didn't use the "wireless functions" on your iPhone and just used the iPod portion to listen to music, there's nothing really they can do about it then.

Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see how Apple addresses this issue.

Which is illegal (and very stupid) to do on an airplane.

no, that's a myth. it's not a question of safety (if the airlines navigational equipment is disturbed by something as easily as cellular antennas, there are some more serious fundamental problems that need to be addressed) but a question of economics (roaming fees being one example) and to a lesser extent social concern (who the hell wants to sit next to some ass talking on the phone for two hours?)

Actually, I thought that if it is airline policy, it is (in the U.S.) illegal, as it is federally mandated that passengers comply with crew member constructions. I'm half-asleep at the moment, so I could be very wrong... as evidenced by my above post, which replied to someone who had already been replied to.
Besides the fact that I and a whole slew of other travelers will either have you removed or beat you senseless. If you are so important you can't be off the phone for a couple hours, fly private jets.

I never tried to imply that you wouldn't be able to use the iPhone as an iPod during flight.

If you read my other posts, you'll see that I was just claiming that it's stupid to do anything illegal on an airplane these days.

Should I mention that making cellular calls from a private airplane is illegal as well? :p

Hmm, well let's all just hope for Skype then. Skype is the IM I wish everyone would switch to, because I think they've made a MUCH stronger effort at cross-platform compatibility than any other company, and I feel like that sort of effort ought to be rewarded.

Too bad their video quality sucks.

I'd rather have AIM/Yahoo than Skype.

It will still do that on surfing the net.

And for menu vs coverflow mode for music. I just noticed they've changed the video tour on apple.com/iphone too. The Office clip doesn't start in portrait mode. Maybe they just realized there was no point to portrait mode for videos, so why waste the battery involved in the switching?

According to the FCC:

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules prohibit the use of cellular phones using the 800 MHz frequency and other wireless devices on airborne aircraft.

I'm curious as to whether 'use' includes the phone simply being on?

But the iPhone would technically have to be on if you wanted to use the iPod portion, as the phone and the iPod are integrated into the iPhone. So that's why I'm saying it'll be interesting to see how Apple addresses the issue.

I'm assuming just like every other cellphone ...an "airplane mode."

I don't believe it is on any of the pages that were posted, but I read at the end of the book it said there may be more features added at the release and AT&T employees will be notified of them. :)

I believe that Apple still has a few features that they've yet to tell us about. There's gotta be at least one secret still. It'll do wonders for their stock price on the 29th if they unveil something that's perceived as useful/innovative.

I'd just like to voice my offense at your comparison of mapquest and google maps. Google maps is elegant and uncluttered. Mapquest is crap.

I just meant in terms of it being like mapquest in that it uses predetermined starting/ending location information to guide you, unlike GPS which tracks your movements. It is possible for two online map services to have such minor similarities.

I'm surprised some people are sticking up with apple/AT&T's decision to disable MMS.

I don't care which solution is technologically superior, give me both and I'll see for myself which one I'd rather use. From what I understand SMS and MMS are charged a flat fee only if you use them while email requires you to sign up for a data plan. While there's no doubt in my mind a data plan is almost necessary to take advantage of the iphone's features, I don't like companies crippling the products I buy for the sole purpose of making more profit on other services.

There's no way you can spin this fact to convince me this decision was taken in the consumer's best interest.

I see where you are coming from, but I really think Apple is going to have something set up so it's a very seemless easy process. Also, if you give people 2 ways to do something - one old and standard and the other new and consequently harder to initially understand and use - people will stick witht eh old one (epecially if the new technology does essentially the same thing as the old without any obvious advantage). By only giving you the new and setting it up so you don't have to choose anything and making it very seemless, it guarantees people will begin using your new technology. Although I understand that makes the purchase a little more risky, hopefully Apple can pull through on it.

Personally I'm not worried because I'm waiting until at least September to get one so I'll know the full deal by then and I can make a much more informed decision.

I was of course being facetious.

oh but wait, i can't send a pic or vid of my daughter doing something super funny because… why? who knows? i am getting kind of sick of the Apple, what we don't tell you is good for you.

The iPhone is a platform. They'll be adding new features over time with a simple software update.

It has always been like that!

Regarding video playback, I liked it better when it would rotate based on the orientation of the device.

Maybe that wasn't working reliably or something. Too bad.

It was always like that since it was first revealed. Video from the beginning has always played in only wide screen, you can even see in the keynote. It is other features like cover flow and whatever else that sense the rotation and change. And I might add, i think it would be really cool if when you rotated it while the keyboard is up, it went to a wide screen bigger keyboard for those with big fingers, and you could see what you are typing above. :)

Cindy, thanks for the entire packet! You rock!!;)

Everyone else, we've never seen the inside of the "settings" menu yet, so don't argue about airplane mode yet.

This didn't really reveal too much but it's just reassuring that nothing has really changed yet. And remember, if Apple were to put new details into this, there would be ZERO suprises.

why would u leave it on anyway??? you cant get or make calls that high, I tried once to see if it was true because of the whole flight 93 conspiracy lol. anyway... its true, you can't!!!
