This happened to my wife's iphone several weeks ago. Talked to Apple, Att, Apple again. Finally tried ATT one more time and was eventually put in touch with their "expert", a nice lady who fixed the problem in about 10 minutes. The details were over my head, but she said something like "a call sometimes gets stuck in a cell tower acting as a block to any other calls" I think she completely took the phone off the ATT network and then put it back. Probably a real dumbed-down explanation but everything has worked well since.

That would seem to sit with what O2 told me about pulling the sim they said it reset there end! havent had it happen with the `nokias ' ive had before which would seem to suggest its a problem with the Jesus phone.

Gbourla, let us know if new SIM helps out.

It didn't. Same problem 30 min later. So i went apple, they said all is fine. So i went back to att store. They had no answers, even a guy working there said he has been getting voicemails today without the phone ever ringing about 2 hours after the call. They had no answers. Its ridiculous that no one knows why, but i guess it is mainly and Iphone problem. They had a guy today with the same problem. They tried a new sim and new # for him and it didn't help. Hopefully it clears up soon or I may be forced back to vzw. I love my iphone but can't just not get my calls and sms.

I did spend like two hours with ATT, after two hours their top tech support told me that if she increase time before my voicemail picks up it will solve the problem, so from standard 20 seconds she did increase to 40 :mad:......Who is going to wait 40 seconds for answering machine, who is crazy here????? After that I told her to check my IMEI and guess what it was wrong, it was from the old phone...I am not sure why did I even had to tell her to check that but I guess they are not so much trained on iPhone. So i was happy I was hoping my phone is going to work.....NO!
10 min later same story, my phone is not working.

I really dont know what to do, I am stuck in the contract and my phone does not work. I think something is wrong with my phone # something is messed up and thats it. My girlfriend does not have any problems. Do I have any options here?

Is the new phone using 3G? Can you turn that off for a day or two and see if that works?

If it works fine on EDGE (like your old phone did) then it may prove that there are problems with the 3G network in your area. That's not a solution, but at least you can stop trying to fix your phone.

I did switch it to EDGE and still same story its not working :mad::mad::mad:

I will post an update here on what my local Apple store has to say, got my appointment set up Friday morning, so by evening I should be able to get back here hopefully with some good news ;)

Great let us know, I will try schedule one myself. But I am sure apple guy in the store will think I am crazy when he see me for the 5th time in the store with the same problem.

Well just so you don't feel bad, I've been having this same problem with my Razr for the last year. I don't think it has to do with the hardware at all but something in the service.

I never have mine on silent, don't have call forward or anything like that.

It also has begun to happen with increasing frequency.

They will probably just give you some generic answer that doesn't really help much. Like "sometimes the service can be buggy because of blah blah blah..."
Good luck though.

have you updated your phone to the 2.2 firmware?, i know i used to have this problem all the time in southern california and they told me to upgrade to the most recent firmware and it fixed it...
:apple:K

apple store

I went to the apple store today and they had more info to give than att did. They hooked it up to the diagnostic and said i had 91 modem resets since my last restore. ~10 is acceptable so they warrantied out my phone as well as my wife she had 70. He said that number and the people with the same problem in the area is related to a new tower activation in our area 83rd ave and Deer Valley road for those from the phoenix area who may have the same issues NW Valley. They seem to be working fine now. Only time will tell if this is a fix or if something else can be wrong.

Is this firs time they have replaced your phone?

My phone's modem had 60 resets when they checked. I got a new phone but still the same problem. For me, at least, if i turn off 3G then it will wake up when a call arrives. That's the only solution i can offer at the moment.

Oh, I called apple support today and my rep talked to an engineer and they claim they've never heard of this problem occurring. Please... read your own forums, Apple!

But were u missing ALL calls or only calls while the phone was in sleep mode?

Ok now I can understand why some people hate the dilemma of going to both AT&T and Apple. So Friday morning, I walked in my local Apple store, of course I explained my scenario first and apparently the genius who I was talking to has experienced the same kind of problem with some iPhone users.

So what he did was a diagnostic test on my iPhone (for a couple of minutes) so I patiently waited, after which to my amazement my iPhone was really in top condition, almost no drop calls, strong antenna & signal blah blah (the Genius continues on) and then he goes it's probably some network issues. He told me to drop by an AT&T store which is also within the area, and ask them to do a SIM swap.

So I left the store, went to the AT&T store right. This lady greeted me and I've explained my situation, told her that I was just from the Apple store and again it seems she had this scenario lots and lots of time before because she goes those people need to be educated, it's not our network, it's their hardware. She kept on going and going, telling me that the SIM swap wouldn't solve the problem, instead you need a new iPhone while along the way I'm confused why these two are pointing each other  So she gives me a new SIM card, replaced my old one and I made sure my contacts were still intact (of course it should be) and she finally bid farewell and good luck.

So right now I have a new SIM card (that lady had tons on her counter apparently being swapped left and right by iPhone customers) and so far it's working fine. I will update any changes or if this doesn't ring problem happens again. I'm still thinking about what happened earlier about those two. The next time this happens again, I'm gonna pull Apple's supervisor and AT&T's supervisor to talk to me with regards to this blame it to someone issue (they're just a few blocks/stores to each other)

Please report back as my wife has a 1st Gen that does this often (Reno, NV)

I had this same exact problem and it's frustrating. I did everything Apple and AT&T told me to do. Changed the SIM, restored the phone, reset network settings. AT&T and Apple gave me the run around but then I called up and threatened to disconnect my service. They put me in touch with a special technical support department (I do not remember the name).

The tech support agent was really friendly and seemed to know her stuff. She went through the cell towers in my local market and found that my cell was stuck on a couple of towers in my area. So sometimes it would forward the calls to that tower but because my phone wasn't there, it wouldn't ring through on my end. She removed me from those towers and reset the setting on her side. I also reset the settings on my side.

Since then, I have not had this problem. All of my calls come through 99% of the time. If not, they go directly to voicemail...the way it should be...

Good luck. Call AT&T and try to get to an escalated support center and tell them you want them to go through the towers and remove you if you are stuck on one...then reset the settings...

If you need help getting out of your contract, PM me and I will give you some tips on how to get out.

Ok...I did call Apple support and after 30 min of talking with the tech she got another tech (iPhone Product Specialist) who did chat with me for another 30 minutes going back and forth consulting other tech's. At the end he did set appointment for me at the Apple store on Monday and this time they are going to test my phone and hopefully figure out whats happening. Also I got his direct email and phone for the follow up. So lets see what is going to happen on Monday.

One thing that I did like about two (apple) people I did talk to is that they did not blame ATT at all, it was - What can we do, to resolve this....So I will post update on Monday.

I am having the same sort of issue, however I know that it is my phone's problem. Sometimes when in sleep mode I will not get any phone calls or texts. When I awake the phone it seems sort of frozen.

1) "Slide to unlock" does not move
2) It will show a cell connection, but a second later I will not have any bars, wireless connection, or will "ATT" display. Then I will get text messages that were sent while I was in sleep mode.

Another problem I have whether related or unrelated is that my battery will flash while in sleep mode displaying a low battery. I then check the phone and the battery is fine and nowhere near depleted. I noticed once that these two problems happened nearly at the same time.

Read my earlier post (above) if you want to fix the problem. I experienced the same thing, dealt with the run around from AT&T and Apple...This will solve your problem.

Its not limited to AT&T, I am in Canada(so Rogers) and it just happened to me.

My mom called and I have a missed call, I have a voicemail entry but the phone never rang or vibrated. Weird ****, and it has happened a number of times before to me.

One call is really not the same thing, was it in you pocket?, It might just not have got a signal for a few seconds when the call came in sent it to your VM and then got the signal and alerted you to a VM, happens with all cell phones.

I just got back from the Apple Store. According to the Apple guy at the store this has been known ATT issue (last 10 days) in the Phoenix area and they have been instructed (by Apple) not to swap iPhones any longer. According to him ATT installed new tower and many customers have been experiencing problems. When he connected my phone to the computer i had 11% drop calls and 89 modem resets, and the average modem reset should be less than 10. Proposed solution is to turn off 3G until is resolved.

ATT is supposedly working on this issue and it should be resolved in the next few days. Can anyone else confirm this?

When i call ATT they are AGAIN blaming Apple and they have not knowledge about this issue...who is crazy here?
