In select U.S. states, residents can add their driver's license or state ID to the Wallet app on the iPhone and Apple Watch, providing a convenient and contactless way to display proof of identity or age at select airports and businesses, and in select apps.

Starting today, the feature is available to residents of West Virginia. To set it up, open the Wallet app and tap on the plus sign in the top-right corner. Next, select Driver's License and ID Cards and follow the on-screen steps.

Apple says the feature requires an iPhone 8 or later running iOS 16.5 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 4 or later running watchOS 9.5 or later.

I was an early adopter on this in California and have yet to use it one time anywhere. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think I read it's generally not accepted by law enforcement, so I still need to carry my DL everywhere.

It's also still referred to as a "pilot program" by the California DMV.

In my observation brilliant people can be found living in many places. Metrics are skewed to reflect the average score without catching the both tails (high and low).

Here i think they had more room for creativity to those responsible govt people to work with apple in implementing this. There might be other states with people who can pull this off but stopped with slow bureaucracy of higher ups.

Meanwhile me getting charged wrong fees at dmv and getting a refund 1.5 years later.
Found it. New dmv head appointed in 2020 making big changes.
He is coming from auto industry (general manager at GM) for 30 years).

Probably governor didn’t block his crazy futuristic ideas.

Perfect example when opportunity meets preparation.

Upon looking at WV dmv site it just reads as a tech website.

Those folks even have car registration card in their apps/apple wallets.

I could certainly use car registration card being virtual. You can show your id to buy booze - like apple pay.

What I find amazing is that for some reason religious types are linking digital ID with "being satanic" and "being the mark of the beast" and all kinds of other nonsense. There's serious pushback from the children of the corn types on this.

Apple Wallet IDs can also be used to show proof of age or identity at select businesses and venues in the U.S., but there is no list of locations.

So you still need carry your physical ID....soooo

1. Is this REAL ID compliant (in all/any states?)
2. I think you can just look up your state's request for proposals for contractors to work on this, and if it doesn't... is there a way to make an unsolicited proposal that you'll be the developer/contractor who supports it?

Waiting for this to come here and also work for n the Apple Watch.

I usually only take my Watch when I go out as I can pay for things and message friends. Leave my iPhone and wallet at home (only bring DL for ID) so no chance of either getting lost/stolen.

ID on my Watch would be the last thing that lets me only take a single device with me.

In before someone says “I’m not handing my phone to a cop!” 🥴

For those having a hard time imagining how this works and to quiet the paranoia in this thread, here you go:

View attachment 2518503

It doesn't unlock your phone, you DO NOT hand your phone to anybody, nobody even needs to look at your phone because you're not showing them a picture of your driver's license, you're authorizing access to specific information from your State's database.

You tap the terminal, it tells you what it's requesting, and then you agree to send just that information with a Face ID confirmation, just like Apple Pay. Your phone remains locked and in your possession.

I have yet to find a single place that will actually accept my license in California. Great concept, but the execution just isn't there. The state should mandate to businesses that they have to accept it.

This is REAL ID compliant, but the license doesn't have to be a REAL ID to use it, and it can be used for non-driver's licenses too, ie state ID not for driving.

However its usage is limited now to TSA check in at a few state's airports, and age checking in some apps and websites, and perhaps some venues have the ability to scan this and use it as acceptable ID to get into say a concert.

Please don't bother your DMV with an unsolicited proposal. They will say no.

Those US driving licenses are beautiful, especially compared to dull, functional UK ones.

Come on Louisiana... We have a virtual one already. Just let me add it to my wallet. I'll even give you a couple bucks to make it work.
