Every time this list shows up I see it still has Utah on it. Utah canceled their digital ID program. This isn't happening in Utah and it shouldn't be on this list. In fact, the only thing Utah ever committed to was funding one person's time to consult on what it would take to do the thing. Utah has never committed to actually doing this. They ran a small scale digital ID test that allowed, for example, for using digital IDs at liquor stores in certain areas. In the end, it's just being scrapped.

Sorry if you're a Utahn and this is sad news for you but at the same time, given the direction this country is going, do you really want to make it even easier for fascists to track your every action? It's probably a good thing to avoid these systems.

Still available.

As for the airports, I have used my Arizona digital ID in SLC, so it works there too. And this was only two weeks ago.

How well does using this digital DL work in the real world. I'd imagine some people refuse this, whether they should or not according to state laws.
Honestly its worked for me pretty well. I don’t drink, so I can’t really tell you there. But its worked when I got pulled over, and its worked at every airport I flown to (in the United States).

I've tried it a few times at SJC, SFO, LAX, DEN... For some reason it never worked with the TSA facial scans, then I had to resort to my physical CA license and the facial scan worked just fine. What gives??

I have yet to find a single place that will actually accept my license in California. Great concept, but the execution just isn't there. The state should mandate to businesses that they have to accept it.
chicken and egg.... just like Apple Pay, will eventually be there

What I find amazing is that for some reason religious types are linking digital ID with "being satanic" and "being the mark of the beast" and all kinds of other nonsense. There's serious pushback from the children of the corn types on this.
Uh, where?

In select U.S. states, residents can add their driver's license or state ID to the Wallet app on the iPhone and Apple Watch, providing a convenient and contactless way to display proof of identity or age at select airports and businesses, and in select apps.

Starting today, the feature is available to residents of West Virginia. To set it up, open the Wallet app and tap on the plus sign in the top-right corner. Next, select Driver's License and ID Cards and follow the on-screen steps.

Apple says the feature requires an iPhone 8 or later running iOS 16.5 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 4 or later running watchOS 9.5 or later.

Below, we have outlined information about the feature's availability.

Supported States

The following 12 states offer driver's licenses in the Wallet app:
The feature is also available in Puerto Rico.

Future States

Apple and state governments have previously announced that the following U.S. states have signed on to adopt the feature in the future:
  • Connecticut
  • Kentucky
  • Mississippi
  • Oklahoma
  • Utah
  • Illinois
Participating Airports

Apple says travelers should refer to TSA checkpoint signage to confirm availability of the feature.

Apple previously said Wallet IDs can be used at select TSA checkpoints in the following U.S. airports, but it no longer maintains a public list:
  • Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)
  • Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
  • Denver International Airport (DEN)
  • Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)

I used it last week at SAT - San Antonio Texas. Interesting I do not see that airport in the list. Iowa license for me, I had left my wallet at the hotel and had a minor panic arriving in the uber with no ID. Fully expected additional screening to be able to fly with no ID when the agent let me know they accept digital ID. Tapped my phone and alas was able to go right through security and PreChek. It saved the day for me. I had previously tried it once a few days earlier and the tap gave me an error and I couldn’t get it to work at a different airport so I used physical ID.

As tech-minded as I am, I'd still much rather reach into my wallet and hand anyone who needs it, my actual drivers license.
Why? It is more secure, only lets the person requesting your ID see the information they are required to have by law, and does not risk anything falling out of your wallet (or pocket) when you pull it out?

Both a bit paranoid and a bit confused at the same time. Any place that checks your id for proof of age or ID verification, scans it and knows exact where you are. In addition, you already carry your phone which provides a full record of where you are/were.

Please don't bother your DMV with an unsolicited proposal. They will say no.
I'm kind of thinking along the lines of contacting every state that doesn't have it... you only need a single yes, and once you have that, you have some leverage on the others.

Granted, probably anyone who has done the states that are supported so far probably already tried, but the worst that can happen is you can be told no.

If that was your plan, I would start by implementing Apple’s Digital ID APIs in an age verification app, and then you would be able to say you had already worked with it and show your app as an example. :) Unfortunately, if your name is not Accenture, Booz Allen, Price Waterhouse Cooper, EDS, Perot Systems (or some similar company), and/or you did not give a lot of money to the campaign of the guy running the DMV, you are not a likely candidate for the contract.

That's an interesting point... from what I've seen in the news, it doesn't take much to bribe such low level people. Invite them out to a steakhouse... "bribe" isn't even the right word, it's just socializing and becoming the barest of friends with them.
