In select U.S. states, residents can add their driver's license or state ID to the Wallet app on the iPhone and Apple Watch, providing a convenient and contactless way to display proof of identity or age at select airports and businesses, and in select apps.

Starting this Wednesday, November 19, the feature will be available to residents of Illinois.

The announcement confirmed that the Apple Wallet ID will be accepted at Chicago's O'Hare and Midway airports, as well as at Lambert airport in St. Louis, Missouri.

Illinois' Secretary of State's office is launching a free Mobile ID Verifier app for businesses to check proof of age for restrictive purchases, such as the sale of alcohol. This app will be available in the App Store starting tomorrow.

To set up the feature, open the Wallet app and tap on the plus sign in the top-right corner. Next, select Driver's License and ID Cards and follow the steps.

Apple says the feature requires an iPhone 8 or later running iOS 16.5 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 4 or later running watchOS 9.5 or later.

Below, we have outlined information about the feature's availability.

Supported States

Get ready for all the "I am not handing my unlocked phone to a cop" :D comments
What these people fail to realize though is that just like with anything else when you do the double tap to open the wallet, it requires authentication in the form of Face ID/Touch ID or your passcode in order for the card to actually be active

Simply opening up the wallet from a locked phone without doing those things will do no good

Announced 4 years ago…… yet only 13/50 states.
And every single American with a passport, which is about 45-50%. Add everyone in the 13 states that support this (including big ones like California and Illinois, and moderate ones like Georgia, Arizona, New Mexico) and you’re easily looking at the majority of the population. Not to mention the fact that anyone who wants this feature can get a passport and have it; you don’t need to wait for your state anymore.

Apple has no control over when, or if ,states opt into this.
The whole thing is a typical, wasteful, govemental mess. Something like this should just be a Federal law, digital ID's as an OPTION. It should have nothing to do with Apple, just a set of secure requirments, that Apple, Google, Samsung, Garmin etc needs to meet to be valid. Instead you have this crazy list, and in some places that state has its own "wallet" app for ID's.

Does Android have an equivalent to this? The ability to have a digital ID shouldn't be proprietary.
It’s not proprietary, it’s based on which states choose to develop this with each platform. There’s a difference between something being proprietary (meaning one party owns/controls the technology) and being open but not being universally adopted because some platforms just suck

As with all things, Pennsylvania will undoubtedly be among the last, dragged kicking and screaming into something resembling the future.

Agree, it is a mess, but the US Government has bigger things to worry about than this. Just my opinion.

Anyone know how to get the middle name to not show on the digital ID? Mine shows Firstname Middlename L. Looks like it’s an Apple thing, as it applies to both the state and federal digital ID. If they don’t want to display someone’s full last name for privacy reasons, why do they need to have my full middle name? None of the example photos show middle names. Is a middle name really that rare these days that they just haven’t thought of this?
