The idea is to replace the physical card. But the reader infrastructure has to be in place. I don't think we're there yet.can these not be used in a car? Is it only for flying?
The issue I am concerning with is obviously the direct integration with Apple’s wallet system, not by creating another app and their own system. With Apple Pay, one just need to verify the card with bank to add it to iPhone. Not possible yet with the same process for other license. We must live in two different Australia’s. NSW has had a digital drivers license through the Service NSW app for a couple of years now.
And I have had Apple pay set up with all, of my banks for ages, and never once found a vendor where it didn’t work.
Im in Scotland, but if you don't have licence on you, you need to turn up to a police station and show it later. Also it's just really useful ID, with proof of age and address etc. Useful for so many things. digital licence is the future. You don't need to carry a drivers license to drive in England.
Why do you need a credit/debit card? That already available on the iPhone. ??This is just so disappointing. I've been looking forward to it. I am down to carrying three things on me at all times - a credit card, a debit card and an ID. I would love to carry less and this would be a big push in that direction! Great technology. Needs more adoption.
Sorry, not handing my phone over as ID to anyone.
Why do people keep saying this? No implementation of this involves handing your phone to anybody. Some states' apps use a QR code to scan, while the Wallet uses NFC. There is no handing your phone to someone.I’m not a fan of ditching my physical license all together. If a cop pulls me over and asks for my license, I don’t want to hand them my phone.
What year was this? I've had no problem going like 90% card only in Japan. Got my first suica card with a cc and have had no problem since reloading it with one.I don't know about that now. There are a lot of cash based societies out there. People say Japan is so far ahead technologically but it is very heavily cash based. I remember heading down to the subway at Narita Airport looking to get a ticket for the train into town. Cash only. I was like... wow, ok, I guess Japan being so far ahead technologically was never true.
I agree with all that. Point is, when a law enforcement encounter is imminent, I want to turn off my phone (to prevent involuntary bio-metric access). So my issue is not access to the digital ID, it's access to everything else on the phone. So, phone off, plastic ID is the best solution.I suspect if a cop waves a gun in your face, it's not going to matter if you use digital ID or not. They're gonna make any excuse to do so. Therefore digital ID isn't the problem, the cop and/or the criminal justice system the enables this is.
Good thing is, if you know your rights, you tell the cop they don't need to have your phone in their hand. There are states that implement digital ID and accept it for driving, and they specifically had to change their state laws to allow the driver to give their ID via a QR code in their state app, or hand over the good old fashioned plastic ID. If a cop in one of those states demands your phone, you can tell them you know the law and you know for a fact they scan the QR code and you don't hand your phone over. If a cop flips out about you not giving your ID, it's no different than a cop flipping out because you didn't consent to a search of your car, it's still a right, and a cop that goes out of their way to violate your rights can be called out on it.
Now if they shoot you, that's not so good. But I would suspect they would look for any reason to shoot you. Imagine you gave your ID, they say "It's fake" (even if you know for a fact it isn't), they arrest you, you appear to 'resist arrest' then they shoot you. Not too different a situation.
I'm a "belt and suspenders" person. If my wallet gets pinched I still have my phone. And vice versa. Is carrying a physical wallet that much of a burden? (I'm an Oldster). Why do you need a credit/debit card? That already available on the iPhone. ??
You can hold the power button and volume up button a few seconds to lock out biometrics. So if it looks like they’re gonna grab it from you, you can lock out biometrics quickly.I agree with all that. Sorry for the delayed response. It was summer 2019.Why do people keep saying this? No implementation of this involves handing your phone to anybody. Some states' apps use a QR code to scan, while the Wallet uses NFC. There is no handing your phone to someone.

Apple Pay isn't as prevalent as you think. Why do you need a credit/debit card? That already available on the iPhone. ??
It works. Also “Clear” isn’t a bad way to go either. You skip the line. And at DIA the line is always horrible. I mean bad. And they don’t even ask for you ID. They do it randomly. I once flew from Denver to Orlando and back without my DL before they did the on phone ID s I left my my whole wallet at home. Didn’t need it in Florida as everywhere I went I knew the people.Getting ready to trip to LAX, tmrw, from ATL, and I'm finally gana be able to give my Mobile DL a go
Seems TSA only allows ATL, BWI, DCA, DEN and PHX to accept IDs in Apple Wallet . . . since I'm only flying-through ATL, that's my one testing point.
I couldn't--for the life of me--successfully add my ID to my AW6, so I can't test that.
Got a lot of things to do (and places I need to be) on a schedule, and I'm definitely taking my cards with me in my own wallet
I'll report back, when I can...
