I won’t even need the car fob. Electronic key on phone if I want to be safe I take it in case phone dies.
Digital Key works even if the phone is off or has a dead battery, as long as express mode is enabled.

On the BMW, I can’t see using a watch since you must place the phone up into the center console to start the car. Also at random intervals Apple requires you to reauthorize the access of the car to the NFC. Its not worth the pain to use over the keyfob.
Digital Key Plus in my 2024 BMW features ultra wideband so I just get in my car with my watch and/or phone on and go. There’s no tapping or placing any device anywhere. The car even unlocks when I am walking up to it and locks when I walk away.

It's hilarious to see some responses to this from people who are essentially like "wElL iF yOu HaVe NoThInG To HiDe" about this basic right to privacy and unnecessary search. As others have pointed out, handing over physical control of your device to the police is always going to be a bad idea, especially if your phone somehow gets unlocked or already was unlocked when pulling up this Apple version of the DL.

if it were tap to phone where the police get the wallet on their device and you don’t have to give your device to them..that’d be cool.

Giving your entire phone to a cop seems like moving backwards not forwards.

What good is it if you can't use it to verify your age when you get carded at a bar?

Then, the next step, injecting the ID under our skin like we do with our pets.
Joking aside, with all the hacks stealing all our information and the likelihood that our biometrics might also be hacked in the future we should probably be looking into hardened IDs (chips, hardware tokens, etc.) that can be reissued if lost or stolen. Some European countries already have national ID cards with embedded chips (like credit cards, RFID, etc.) that can be used for authentication online. Some people might choose to get those tokens embedded under the skin. There's been people doing similar things already. Obviously non-mandatory.

Tesla doesn’t have express mode afaik

Just what we've been asking for: a reason to hand our phone (with all personal information about our lives) over to law enforcement 🤦‍♂️

It's amazing how many people applaud new "features" that enable authoritarian rule.

@Supercyborgninja has mentioned the next step that would make this more universally acceptable and more practical.
before i read his/her comment i was thinking the same thing.
it would make it so easy to prove identity this way, without handing over a phone or watch physically.

with "tap-to-prove-identity" there would be a way to even hide the actual identity related numbers or even name from people if at a bar or store, with the only detail you allow to be readable on the bar or store's terminal is age, for example.
TSA and police would be able to get all the numbers and name and address. but in other situations you could select what info to be passed. much like in share contact details you limit who gets to see your profile picture.

Most Australian states have digital driver licences, although at this stage they are held within state government or DMV apps rather than the Apple Wallet. We do not need to hand over our phone to anyone. Police or venues can just view the phone or they can scan a time-based QR code (ie. a screenshot will not work). We can choose what we information will be shared or scanned by choosing age, identity, or licence.
Age shows your face and confirms you're 18+
Identity also shows your name, address and signature
License also shows your licence number, expiry date and date of birth

BMW Digital Key Plus - "You can use your iPhone or Apple Watch to unlock, lock and start your [vehicle]". You do not even have to touch your Apple device to the car, unless the battery is dead in your iPhone or Apple Watch. Disappointingly, the uptake of digital car keys has been slow by most car manufacturers.

For those interested, here is the list of cars that support digital keys: https://www.apple.com/ios/carplay/available-models/

If Nevada doesn't get it soon ... then I will go back to California.

You do not hand over your phone, you scan your phone. This is Apple Pay but for IDs. You do not hand this over to anyone any more than you hand over your phone to a cashier to use Apple Pay.

But police do not accept the Apple Wallet ID system, not a single one. This only works for the TSA in a few airports in the USA. However, some states have adopted a digital ID system separate from Apple's, and some have changed their laws (ie Louisiana) so that you scan the barcode on their app and that is accepted ID for police departments. So you still don't hand anything over, you only need to let them scan a barcode on your phone.

The Poh-lice like to exert undue control and hold you hostage by keeping your physical documents. It will take LAWS to stop that BS and force them to accept physical ID scans. There is absolutely no reason to still need a physical license other than obstinance.

Here is a post by Victoria Police (in Australia), themselves saying "do not hand over your phone". I'm getting close to not needing to carry any cards or my car keys. Maybe one day I won't need house keys either.

Someday, chip under the skin. Then we are back to handing ourselves over.

Most 2022 and newer cars use UWB so no NFC needed.

Yeah, California still doesn't show up in Wallet. You can use the Ca. DMV app which has the option to add a digital copy of your license but it is NOT the same thing as having it in Apple Wallet.
Its on Google Wallet now. They are probably rolling out the implementation slowly.
