iPhone Driver's Licenses May Soon Expand to Another US State

Driver's licenses and IDs may soon be available in Apple Wallet for iPhone and Apple Watch users living in Oklahoma. MacRumors discovered signs of an Oklahoma ID in Apple's backend.

With input from Apple, a House bill was passed in March 2026 that allows Service Oklahoma to issue mobile or digital versions of state identification cards, driver's licenses or permits – suggesting this is Apple taking preparatory steps for future Wallet integration.

The digital equivalents are not intended to replace physical licenses or state IDs, meaning Oklahomans will be required to keep the latter, while using the mobile version as a "companion option."

Other states planning to add support for driver's licenses in Apple Wallet include Connecticut, Kentucky, Mississippi, Utah, and Virginia. MacRumors already spotted signs of Utah and Virginia in Apple's backend.

Multiple states have already implemented support, as has Puerto Rico:

  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • West Virginia
Digital IDs and licenses are accepted at select TSA checkpoints across the United States. They can also be used at some business venues and in select apps that require ID verification for services or purchases.

In states that do not support licenses in the Wallet app, iPhone users can add their U.S. passport to the Apple Wallet app with the iOS 26 Digital ID feature.

Also, I thought I read on here that one state, GA maybe, was requiring all law enforcement to have equipment to accept these electronic licenses relatively soon (EOY 2027 maybe?). Kind of a chicken & egg thing. No sense to equip places to accept these until they are pretty common, but no sense in people signing up for one if you can't use it anywhere.
 
Used the MyID app for Utah, it was kinda neat. Various levels of ID depending upon what was required. My name, photo and birthday (liquor store), more data for airport, and full disclosure for a bank or buying a home.

Passport was surprisingly sophisticated. So far, I'm impressed - will see how handy this will be when actually travelling.

Adding your passport is almost impossible without someone else helping you since I kept moving the phone when it wanted me to turn my head to the left. I thought adding your passport to airline sites and for visas was hard but Apple takes it to a new level of difficulty.
 
Slow movement, and will sadly take a hundred years before it comes to UK/Europe. UK citizens are particularly against a digital ID. Scandinavian countries have digital IDs, but they're controlled by the central banks, so doubt Apple will be able to convince them to open up their APIs.
 
At least the way that California has implemented this makes it such a PITA to maintain that I’ve given up and just reverted to using my physical license, which has worked just fine for almost 40 years.

Lets say you are in a rush to catch an early 6am flight so you forget your wallet on the table at home but you have your driver’s license on your iPhone, enabling you to get thru TSA and make your flight where it would’ve been impossible to drive home and back and still make it

I would say that’s a potential use case 😎

Anecdotally, I have found that the general public has slowly become aware that this is a real thing.

I wouldn't (and hope not to have to) try it with law enforcement, but for simple age verification at grocery stores and such, people finally seem to recognize it and accept it.

It's just like Apple Pay at first, I had so many people so confused at what happened, but register says OK so they didn't have to know what it is. Now I see people use it and nobody bats an eye.

The way it's currently set up where you have to go in and display card information is clunky and could be better, but at least people seem to understand that it's not just a simple picture.

It would be nice if Apple could somehow integrate age verification into the Apple Pay process so one tap covers everything.

Of course that might lead to a lot of unintended consequences. But those seem to be coming anyway.

Because it isn't done... When it is, and there is something to announce, I'm sure it will show up.

It just passed the state house in April, with strong bipartisan support, and is now in the state senate.
