Now LG's Viewty 2 is also rumoured to be released in June. The 32GB and 8MP+xenon sound good, but that relatively small 3" display stops me...

You haven't listed my favourite of the "iPhone-killers". Personally I really like the look of the HTC Touch Diamond2. If it's good and works out cheaper than an iPhone, I would be happy getting that. I mean, I can live with Windows Mobile if it's slightly cheaper...

UGGG windows mobile SUCKS BALLS imo

I don't think that matters much since the concept of the iPhone will stay the same, and so will the competitors. So wether iPhone 3 will be revolutionary or a big disappointment, I will compare it with the same phones as I do now.

EDIT:
Sorry, I forgot to react to the BlackBerry Storm: it hasn't got Wifi, so it's off the list immediately.

Really? And all the other phones have WiFi? I got the blackberry storm a few weeks ago, but the only reason i got it instead of the iPhone was because the iPhone is with Rogers, which sucks overall here in Canada because of their high rates, and lack of an unlimited data plan, and also especially suck in my area because of their poor coverage.

I also got a killer deal on an unlimited data plan and am with the best carrier for customer service (in my experience) and coverage.

One thing that i do like about the storm is that it is cdma and gsm (i'm on cdma) so if i went travelling into the states i could pop in a pay as you go sim card, and get to keep the carrier i like when i'm at home.

But i would still have gotten the iPhone had that have even been a reasonable option for me, i am getting a $25 a month unlimited data plan btw so there is NO way i'd go to rogers and pay more than i am now, just to get a 2 gb plan, and then add on unlimited texts for another $15 and then $15 for visual voicemail.

Just get the iPhone, you'll be happier in the end, because of how slick the OS is compared to everything else

It's not that I'm doubting about the iPhone, I will get it most probably anyway. But as I said, I want to know what the concurrence is and what they're capable off. I just want to be 100% sure about my choice since it'll cost me at least €30/month (two years long) and €75 for the device. So it's not so bad in Canada Ebouwman (btw, are you Dutch?)!;)

What's more, if same Idou user will come to me and say "Haha, you don't even have xxx" I can say what he doesn't have. Copy/paste or MMS is one of the arguments now, and I'm sure there will be something else with the new iPhone.

I think most will talk about lack of multi-tasking for a long time. Maybe it will come in the 4th generation phone. I think we really need that to keep the flow of apps. For example, my kid was playing with some Easter Egg app and she said "Dad, you got message". I opened and read the SMS and when I closed the message her app is closed as well. I had to re-launch her app. Most apps usually go to where we were before which I think is still not in good flow of what we are used to with applications. But this easter app lost all the work she did. She had to start over again.

I am not sure if there is a work around to this but it's something all iPhone lovers will have to get used to.

Yes that's terrible. Maybe they will support a bit of multi-tasking... I really think you should be able to read a message whatever you're doing.

When you're doing something within an app and you get called, after the call you return to your app right where you were left, right? I don't see why they shouldn't do this mail and other basic stuff.

The lack of multitasking is making to think of getting an android phone over iphone. I will wait until june/july to decide. I want to see how integrated iohone 3 OS' push feature works with 3rd party apps...assuming that is possible. I also want to see if the slingplayer and skype over 3g with the iphone.

Yes, it works with calls. So, the ability seems to be there but not utilized. With the support of Push Notifications in 3.0, this lack of going to previous screen can cause more frustration to users.

Depending on what you do mostly with a phone will eventually drive your decision. But, sometimes you need to own the phone for a month to find out what you are missing and if you can live without them.

First time I owned iPhone I returned in a day as I just couldn't accept the width of the phone as I preferred candybar/sliders plus no MMS killed it for me. Over the months I changed between several smart phones and I changed to accept larger phones. Knowing 3.0 Beta is out with MMS, I grabbed the iPhone.

I am into my 3rd week with it now and I have to say I love almost everything iPhone CAN do. It does it almost perfectly except the MMS interface could have been better to include smileys, animations, audio clips, etc. But few things that it is not doing are driving me crazy at this time. Like some of my friends I may have to compromise on those features over the great things it can do. But, I don't think I will compromise if any of the new phones in summer are going to be good :).

For example, I like to be able to see my calendar items always on Standby screen or at least the calendar should show count of tasks left for the day with a number like it does for new unread messages. Also, I do take lot of pictures and upload to Smugmug or Flickr. This is a major pain in iPhone as I have to leave the app running until the upload is completed. If the new iPhone has higher Mega Pixel Camera the uploads will take even longer. Also, I am hating how I have to reopen apps I am in when a message pops up or I go to view it.

I have 2-3 months before new iPhone comes and I might find work around to my problems or might just adjust to live with them over time as I like most other things it does. But if some of the new phones are good I will surely check them out but I doubt if they will come with AT&T 3G till the end of the year.

Completely agree with that!

what about the Toshiba TG01?
Thanks, completely forgot about that! I will add it in the opening post

The device is huge though...

I will buy a new phone in a month of 3-6, and of course I'm looking forward to the next-gen iPhone. But, I want to be good informed of the competition...

What's important for me, is that the phone shouldn't have any mechanism, so slide-phones like the Palm Pré are out of the competition.

What do we have:

Huawei/T-Mobile G3
+ Design
+ big capacitive screen
+ 5MP camera
+ Android
- definite specs?

HTC Magic/T-Mobile G2
+ Android OS

SonyEricsson Idou
+ 12MP camera with xenon and LED
+ opensource Symbian
- definite specs?

Samsung OmniaHD
+ 3.7" OLED capacitive screen
+ 8MP camera with 720p video recording at 24fps
- WinMo
(- Samsung i8910 will be identical except the OS which would be Symbian)

LG KM900 Arena
+ Small size
+ Multi-touch input
+ 5MP camera

HTC Touch HD
+ 3.8" screen
+ 5MP camera
- resistive screen
- big
- WinMo 6.1

Toshiba TG01
+ good battery
+ 4.1" screen
- resistive screen
- big
- WinMo 6.1

Next-gen iPhone
+ Mac OS
+ Mac design and quality
+ Multi-touch
+ App Store
+ magnetometer
- Camera?

So my question is, what other phones could be a good competitor for the iPhone in my case? And/or did I forget some strong points or disadvantages of some phones?

you forgot Nokia N97.

No, I said I don't want any (slider-)mechanism, so phones like Palm Pré, Touch Pro 2, SE Xperia, Nokia N97 fall off... But thanks!

So it's not so bad in Canada Ebouwman (btw, are you Dutch?)!;)

Actually yes, my dad moved to canada from holland when he was a teenager ;) I still haven't been there yet though :(

As for the topic of multi-tasking i think that it's the app's fault that it didn't return to the same spot. When apple went and said they didn't want apps running the in the background they did it for a good reason. In my blackberry if i'm not careful to close each thing once i'm done i could have a bunch of apps sucking my memory dry!

I think iphone equivalent phone to be Nokia 5800. Nokia is cheaper than iphone and have lots of exciting features with it which iphone lacks.

I don't think you miss much! :p But it's always good to have been once in your life in the place "where you're from".

Only problem is that i don't speak dutch...

I'm sure that if i stayed in the main cities i'd be ok right? Or i'd have to go with my dad.

I have just splashed out on an HTC Touch Diamond 2 (as well as my iphone).

Would definitely recommend it, Winmo is even more hidden than in the touch HD, great form factor and free upgrade to winmo 6.5 promised. Also, no lag that earlier winmo phones seemed to suffer from.
