Can anyone remember how long it took for the first firmware update of the old iphone from release?

Also how many firmware releases where there prior to 2.0

1.0 - June 29, 2007
1.0.1 - July 31, 2007
1.0.2 - August 21, 2007
1.1.1 - September 27, 2007
1.1.2 - November 12, 2007
1.1.3 - January 15, 2008
1.1.4 - February 26, 2008
2.0 - July 11, 2008

I agree that the battery runs out very quick....and 2.0 has some lag in places..but Im sure 2.1 will be here fast..I just hope Apple can improve the battery.

The biggest qualm I have with 2.0 is that whenever I try to listen to music while surfing safari my music suddenly skips and my iphone becomes totally unresponsive....its really unacceptable and after the BS response I got back from the genius at my apple store I'm really fed up with this new microsoft attitude that Apple has. If the new blackberry touch device is really as good as people claim it is and is itunes compatible then im there.

so will restoring my 3g iphone , thus giving me the newest firmware cure my small issues? Specificly the texting, and how long it takes contacts to open?

if not then i can just wait until apple releases the downloadable update.

no problems on 1st gen iPhone running 2.0

I haven't noticed any decrease in battery life, or stability issues. When it's fully charged in the morning the battery icon looks full till night (it's full right now). This is with occasional music and internet surfing (maybe hour each).

I agree. Do you have your contacts sync with an exchange server? Mine do and I wonder if that is part of the problem as well (Phone access the exchange account to see if there are any changes).

No, it just syncs with my personal iMac. I even tried taking off push for contacts and calendar, and it is still slow as molasses. It is very annoying. Hopefully Apple will get this fixed soon.

Mine always freezes up when I first enter the contact screen.

Same here, its a real pain.

Not true. Just last week, I lost all my email messages on my BB pearl due to the darn memory leak it suffers from.

Ditto that. Twice I got my inbox totally wiped: on a 7130e and later on an 8703e. Both times the rest of my week was thrown into mayhem. It certainly didn't "just work." I would've thought this was a fluke, but I see now that someone else experienced the same thing on a much more recent time frame.

I am now seeing a of couple of glitches on 2.0: my SMS keyboard (but not my mail or Safari keyboard) is a bit slow but does keep up, and I have had safari quit on me once, taking me to the home screen. But compared to the catastrophic issues I've had on Palm, WM and Blackberry at one point or another, these two things are non-events.

My REAL beef is with MobileMe, which is totally botched up for me right now. iPhone push works great, but the web interface tells me my username doesn't exist. And I can't cancel my trial, because doing that requires you to log in over the web... which I can't do. Greeeat.

I have to say ... I read somewhere that uninstalling the game JirboBreak fixed some sluggishness and freezing up. I uninstalled and voila, my phone seems to be doing ok. Knock on wood.

A fair number of quirks for me:

Sluggish keyboard
Random reboots (just twice so far)
Laggy feeling in parts of the interface
Sometimes doesn't accept commands
Refuses to switch between portrait & landscape sometimes

...and yes, I'm on rev 347. I'm just holding tight and hoping for a nice bug fix release to come out.

I'm always confused about the Maps app - I know it tracks me when I press the locate button.. but unlike 1.1.4, when locate button is off, it still seems to track me around. I don't want it to!

It's official. I'm waiting until after blackberry releases their touchscreen phone before I make a decision.

I was cursing all the crazy maniacs waiting in line for hours on end just to get the iPhone, but I'm now thanking them, because I would have otherwise made a bad purchase.

Thank you, loonies.

The iPhone is still amazing and a great phone even though the 2.0 software is a little sluggish. This will be fixed very soon. But hey, go with Blackberry, their phones are probably more for you.

i have a gen 1 iphone. it works great, but i've been wanting something that's 3g-esque, and thought that the answer was the iphone 3g. unfortunately, it seems that it is an astronomical dissappointment.

regarding my next phone upgrade - i don't care who makes it, apple, rim, or mickey mouse. i have no allegiances, just give me a product that works - and for sh*t's sake: if the battery life sucks, AT LEAST ALLOW FOR A USER REPLACEABLE BATTERY, FVCKING DUH!

i hope (but am not hopeful) that this experience causes people to think twice before diving blindly into a company's "latest and greatest" just because it's XYZ company - it's bad for consumers. apple is getting lazy and it shows.

ladies and gentlemen, apple is the new microsoft.

Disaster? Far from it.

Buggy? Sure but who expected it not to be? Too much was being released where it wasn't going to have some bugs

I think the lag on text messages is absolutely ABSURD as some other annoying errors but overall I am very satisfied with 2.0 and hope they can fix the bugs soon

The phone has it's share of bugs but I think calling it a disaster is a bit dramatic. Seriously, if you want one that's nice and smooth, return it and check back in 4 months or so. Apple's not going to be fixing much of anything this soon into it so what's the point of banging your head against a wall?

Per the battery specifically, when people stop staring at their new toy 24 hours a day, battery life will double. Follow any phone launch. People complain about battery life for a month. Then they get bored with the toy, they're not constantly playing with it and then it can go 2 or 3 days between a charge. Also, Google Maps is worthless, turn off your GPS. If you don't have or don't use a bluetooth headset, turn off bluetooth. Wifi uses less power than 3G and it's faster. If you are around wifi, turn off 3G. If you're putting the phone away for a while for work, driving, whatever, turn off 3G and wifi. Turn the screen brightness down.
