What about the durability though? A crease really isn’t the main problem with Foldables, it’s the durability.

If this phone is scratchable with your fingernail like every other foldable out there, and falls apart just from looking at it funny it’ll be dead in the water, and Apple’s reputation will be ruined forever.

Some Foldables can be peeled like an orange…

After all, if you’re paying more than double for this phone, and it isn’t as good as, if not better than the pro models what would be the point?

Not sure what you’re on about. Maybe years ago this was a thing. I’ve had a Samsung Flip 7 for six months and no scratches or other issues. I don’t even use a case.

When there have been a few iterations of this new iPhone I shall pick one up on refurb. But I would want Face ID and water proofing like todays iPhone and a better camera system like today's iPhone has.

Even if I had the money for this, I wouldn't buy it anyway if that's the way it turns out. It's too big, looks too heavy, and just ugly to me. But until I see the final product I guess I'll bite my tongue. I hope those that do get one enjoy it, though.

So, you've never owned a foldable before. Got it...

“That thing I said? Yeah, don’t expect that thing I said. But DEFINITELY expect all the OTHER things I said… until, you know… when I let you know not to expect them anymore.”

Swing and a miss not supporting iPad apps when unfolded.
Just remember, you’re reading that from the same person that said it would be creaseless and now it’s not. 🙂 Not supporting iPad apps would be JUST the type of thing that people would copy and paste and comment about… almost like they’re making it up for attention.

I don't think "crease-free" is physically possible. Like, I'm sure Apple will launch something better than the competitors, but last I checked, Apple can't simply break the laws of material physics (yet). But on the competitor front, what I really don't understand is - if this technology was made possible by Samsung. Why on Earth wouldn't they have incorporated this into their own product lines? It just doesn't add up for me.

On the foldable device aspect in general, am I the only one who just doesn't get the appeal? When I take my FLAT phone out of my pocket, I usually have to blow some dust and lint from the screen. Now, imagine pull after pull, 1000s of insertions into your pocket, and thousands of pulls. There's just no way you're going to be able to stop small particles of lint and dust from inevitably compromising a hinge, regardless of how seamless its design.

The jokes about a lack of crease write themselves. Personally, I don't want a device where I cannot see the entire screen at a glance, without manipulating something beyond a twist of my wrist. I got enough to deal with in my life.

Cue the pessimists. Every single time Apple tries something new the same crowd shows up to declare it dead on arrival. No one wants this. Too expensive. Who would buy it?

News flash just because it’s not for you doesn’t mean it’s not for everyone else.
Some of us actually use our phones as serious tools. A foldable iPhone that opens into an iPad-mini-style workspace could be incredibly powerful for productivity, multitasking, reading docs, email, travel, business you name it. And yes, it’ll probably cost $2k+. That’s fine. People drop that much on Starbucks in a year, golf clubs, handbags, or gaming rigs without blinking. Different people value different things.

Personally, I think this is one of the most exciting directions Apple has taken in years. I’ll be buying one day one and using the heck out of it in my career and day to day life. If it’s not for you..great. Don’t buy it. But the constant this will fail because I wouldn’t buy it mindset is honestly exhausting.
You're probably one of those guys that said this about Vision Pro, the most ridiculous DOA product released under Tim Cook.

Is there a single positive thing to say about this product? Seriously.

- Won't have Face ID (understandably)...will have Side Button Touch ID, the worst UX currently shipping on an Apple product now comes to the most expensive iPhone. Great.
- It opens to (almost) the size of the worst iPad, and also won't run iPad apps. It will run some new pseudo phablet UI for home screen and apps, that will need to be manually adopted. Great.
- Won't be crease free as originally thought.
- Has a terrible aspect ratio for the folded-phone itself.
- Will cost more than a better iPhone and a better iPad combined.

Oof.

Probably will sell big in Asia. Just watch Korean, Japanese and Chinese movies and tv shows... fold phones everywhere. OTOH the competition will be tough so who knows?

It’ll be fun to look at it if I happen to be at the mall and walk by the Apple store, and wow did I just learn what a struggle it is fighting iOS to not capitalize “Store” when placed after the word “Apple.” Lol. Anyways I don’t have two thousand dollars so I hope all you rich people enjoy the device.

Since the ultra-thin glass on modern foldables don't have a crease from the factory, it's really about supporting the section of the screen in the middle where the hinge is. If you remove the inner display on modern foldables, you will see there is no actual crease in it, since it never gets folded completely over (the hinge prevents this). The only reason you see a slight valley down the center of the screen on foldables is because there isn't anything underneath it hardware wise to support the screen where the hinge is, like there is everywhere else (battery, etc.). They would almost have to implement some type of tiny piston system built into the hinge, which would raise up add support underneath the screen when the device is unfolded. That is the only way I can think of to completely eliminate the crease/valley.

Honestly don't mind if we have a crease I wouldn't plan to walk around in direct sunlight with the inner screen open. As long as its running iOS and I can add Apple Care. Both reason's why I didn't opt for the Samsung Fold 7 especially warranty claims Samsung are virtually impossible as they will try and get out of it anyway possible reading bad reviews online. As long as it has magsafe, dual camera set up, all day battery life and either face id or touch id take my money!!!!

Just curious. Has Apple ever had a mishap in the past that ruined their reputation forever and what makes you think if this did happen a trillion dollar company will lose users in droves especially people who don’t even buy it. Really interesting take….
They haven’t, that’s why this would be huge if the foldable was a dud. Apple stuff isn’t as perfect and it would be strange to release a phone that breaks as easily as foldables do.

It was bad enough with antennagate, remember that?

Ain’t hard to look up reviews buddy. Name me one that doesn’t have durability issues, with proof to back it up?
All displays experience failure, earlier foldables were prone to failure because it was a new technology. Foldables today are more durable than they were when Samsung first introduced them. Oppo FN6 certification for water resistance with IP56, IP58, and IP59 ratings and additionally, the phone is rated for 1 million fold cycles. Honor Magic V6 holds the highest IP rating among foldable phones with an IP69 rating which is similar to what regular phones are rated at these days. But that does not mean you won't experience a failure rate as all devices do but now foldables are almost on par with regular slab phones with glass screen.

Come on, a simple google will tell you they all have plastic screens. They scratch like a mother

If you use a hard object to operate the screen yes of course it would deform, that's not a failure but a symptom of material physics. Nobody is defying the laws of physics here.
