It's interesting, but as more info is coming out, I'm finding it less and less appealing. I will likely stick to Pro Max models for the foreseeable future. I am quite aggressive with storage management and 256GB works very well for me, and for $1200 to get a phone with the specs and capability of the 17 Pro Max, it's hard to justify another ~ $1000 for a fold. I can get a new Pro Max and Watch Ultra for the projected cost of an iPhone Fold

The 5.5" exterior display is really turning me off. I imagine that being on the go I will interact with the exterior display most of the time.... And after being used to the 6.9" PM for a while now, going down to 5.5 will be a no-go for me.

No one is gonna buy a phone thats $2,000 or more......this is why no one likes apple. Ive been saying theyre gonna go out of business by 2030 cuz theyve been bad with ios updates and phones. Tim cook ruined apple after jobs died sadly
You think a company with a market cap over 4 trillion and over 54 billion cash on hand....is gonna go out of business in the next 4 years?

Screen Size
single screen: 6.4 inches

dual screen: 7.9 inches

triple screen: 10.2 inches

It's so hard for Apple to do a 6 inch screen or bigger on the outside? They know it too. If Huawei or others were inside the US, then lots of people would switch away.

i kinda wish they would make this with two separate displays rather than a constantly folding plastic screen. with edge to edge displays, the brain would begin to overlook a tiny line in between and it would be way more robust. using multiple displays for years it’s not really a big deal. also if i was really criticality watching a movie or something it would probably be on a larger screen anyway. i also don’t want to have to worry about constantly flexing a screen every time i use my phone.
I agree - Apple could have focused on an ultra-precise hinge that aligns two fixed screens so that their edges are not noticeable.

Other than Apple's 1+ Billion active and repeat customers who have propelled Apple to becoming one of the most successful consumer tech companies in the world.

“Whether the reduction in hinge price will reduce retail price or simply bolster Apple's margins is an open question.”

It’s never an open question with Tim.

I travel a lot (20-30 countries a year).

A foldable appeals to me because I hate lugging more gadgets than necessary.

I've always wanted a device the size of a tablet, but that can fit in my pocket. One that I could have multiple apps open on, or just one that I'm not relegated to the mobile experience when using a browser, maps, photos, email, or word processing app.

A phone can't do that. Neither can a tablet. But a foldable phone can.

And I will absolutely pay a premium price for that.
Well, I can see some people seeing it as purchasing two devices in one, an iPhone and an iPad mini to justify paying close to $3K (for a higher storage capacity phone).

Two predictions:

1. The iPhone foldable will not launch in 2026 - Apple delays almost everything anymore. It's really sad.
2. If/when the iPhone foldable does launch, it will bring foldables closer to being mainstream than they've ever been before.

Emotionally, there seems interest in Apple’s take on a foldable - at least in this niche corner of the internet. What I’m more curious to see is if consumer wallets (and the required economy) are ready to hop into a $2,499 foldable iPhone with enough gusto to justify the initiative/platform. Or will we be reading similar “Apple Cuts Production” headlines that we have for iPhone Air?

First-gen Apple foldable with insane engineering, a premium build, and a price that matches the tech? Yeah, sign me up. Sorry it intimidates you, not everyone is stuck in 2014. Some of us actually like living in the future instead of whatever bargain bin timeline doubters are shopping in.
Yeah let Apple drives you in what it wants your future to be Lol

Foldables aren’t supposed to replace slab phones they’re just the next form factor. Pretending they’re useless because they’re new is the same tired take people had about smartphones, tablets, and literally every leap forward. If someone needs a power point to understand why a phone that expands is useful, that’s on them, not the tech. An Apple foldable doesn’t need your permission to exist. Some of us like seeing tech move forward instead of waiting for the world to freeze exactly where we’re comfortable.
That last line is the kicker. Slow-clap worthy.

Think it will launch towards the end of 2026 at $1999. Would like to have a screen size similar to Z Fold when unfolded. Will be fantastic if it has a telephoto lens but looks unlikely for the first couple of generations.

I could be wrong, but I think Apple will sell enough of foldables (if it is a book-style foldable) to continue production. With people being able to finance their phones over 3 years now at 0%, they will have no trouble upping their monthly payment slightly to justify getting their shiny new iPhone foldable. Once the sheep start seeing other people with an iPhone foldable, they will stop at nothing to get their own. Mark my words on this. The Cult of Mac (and iPhone) is alive and well.

I just want a flip! No one is talking about a flip! 😢
I have both the Z Fold 7 and the Z Flip 7 FE (I don't care about the slightly larger outer display, etc. on the Z Flip 7), and I even though my Flip 7 FE is my backup phone and I would admittedly never use it as my primary, I will say they have come along way on the flips since the Flip 4. That version was unusable garbage in my opinion. All in all, I don't really see the need for the flips when we have folds, but to each their own. It does make for a good backup, when you are in the foldable game. :)

Haha. I think you’re probably right. it’s difficult to factor in the power of the early adopters. Though - and maybe it’s just me - I feel like that power peaked a decade ago. Now it’s just sheer volume that drives the bus. Once in the ecosystem, the base grows exponentially.

Yeah, I think you are on point there. It will be interesting to see how it goes, that is for sure!

I sort of have experience in this area, now we are talking, 35 years ago, but Hewlett-Packard came out with a line of folding calculators. The HP 18C, 19B II, which were sweet financial calculators, and the 28C, 28S, scientific calculators. I have all of them in my collection. I eagerly purchased the HP-28C when it came out in 1988, and loved it. We carried it in our briefcases and had it sitting on our desks, where we could flip it open to use it. But it was not liked by the field engineers, as it was not easy to use in the field. Apps did not yet exist, but push buttons did, and the keys on the secondary keyboard were not easy to use in hand. Engineers stuck with the HP-41, 45, and 48.

I have pointed out more than once that the Cúvee emulator of the HP41CX on an iPhone Pro Max is about the same size as the original calculator. I have talked with pilots and have no interest in a folding iPhone. They want an updated iPad mini. They are presently getting an 11" iPads with cell phone because it has been updated.
