Cognitive dissonance must also apply to everyone else that's grown accustomed to the notch, pill, and hole-punch selfie-cameras. Those physical elements are obviously present at all times. The crease, however, blends away when content is displayed. You may still notice the crease at an angle, but to someone viewing directly, the screen's brightness easily overpowers any reflections from the crease, thus why most people don't notice it. They're speaking the truth.

I like the idea of different designs (it’s good to try new concepts), but this is not for me.
The phone will be too expensive, too thick when closed with a screen that’s too small, when opened the screen is still to small (smaller than an iPad Mini which is barely usable for my use case), Touch ID, lack of telephoto lense, and way too fragile.
This forum is gonna have so many threads about is this normal or a defect? Also, I’m guessing AppleCare+ is going to be more expensive too.
Hopefully by version 2/3 they will figure it out. Looking forward to the 18 Pro though and excited to hear reviews once it’s released.

My flight instructor uses an iPad Mini w/ cellular to run a flight app (Garmin Pilot) for GPS navigation, live weather, ADS-B aircraft tracking & traffic collision alerts.
I was thinking of getting the folding iPhone for that purpose....
Ahh yes, I use an iPad in MSFS24 to look at the flight planner for landing procedures once I'm in the pattern for landing. Isn't that how you are supposed to fly? Figure out how a plane works after you've taken off?

I used the Fold 8 today for a few hours (my brothers) and was not impressed. The hinge had a clicking noise sometimes. The screen when closed is cramped and it’s thick. Screen is better when open, but it’s still small and most things had a large letterbox. The crease was easily visible to me most of the times too.
It’s cool, but still don’t see the appeal of the device. Too many compromises for me at least.

I don't quite understand the comment. How does a closed Fold 8 feel cramped when it's wider than an iPhone 17 Pro Max? Does the Pro Max also feel cramped? As for thickness, the Fold 8 is barely 1 mm thicker than the Pro Max.
Perhaps you're referring to the Fold 8 Ultra? The Ultra is a littler narrower than the Pro Max, but they're both practically the same thickness (8.9mm versus 8.8mm, respectively).

The Fold screen was smaller than my 17 Pro in it’s closed state. I dont know the specs, but it was obvious when we used them side by side. He had a case on the Fold so maybe that added thickness. I have the Pro, not the Max. Either way the Fold is thicker than my 17 Pro and the Pro is already too thick in my opinion.
The fold is a nicely built phone except for the hinge noise, but for my use case it doesnt work. Just wanted to post some brief impressions for people who might be on the fence bc I expect the iPhone Fold to be very similar.

If you were hearing noise on the hinge it's definitely the case not the phone bc it doesn't make any noise closing and opening, Fold 8 is slim and definitely over iPhone, crease is the best ever on Samsung foldable too barely noticeable

It had to be his case, because the Fold was clearly thicker. I’ve never used a foldable for as long as I did today, but the crease was always noticeable during normal usage. Maybe it’s one of those things that over time the brain stops seeing it?
I think there is an issue with his hinge. My concern isnt the noise per se, but the durability. The phone is a week old with very light usage. At a minimum, I’d 100% recommend AppleCare on the device.

It's definitely something that a foldable user will not see the more you use it, there are a few of us over here that have been using them for a while so we are definitely in the category haha. I always get insurance on my foldables so I highly recommend that, I have one case that has the noise that makes it seem like it's the hinge, by chance does your brother have a case that has hinge protection? Because usually you those are the ones that make a little noise opening and closing as well as make the phone seem thicker.
For those first time buyers with the upcoming iPhone Ultra fold I recommend watching Jerry's video, these phones will surprise you with durability.

The case did have hinge protection so maybe that’s the issue. The crease was noticeable though. I saw it without trying to see it, but I’d imagine it has to get better over time. Only other thing for me is the 4x3 aspect ratio had huge black bars on all videos which seemed to negate the larger screen size.

If Apple can get developers with apps more on board to help with screen ratio that will be a big move, that's definitely one thing that can improve currently to use the screen real estate, I like to use apps side by side with sometimes 3 on open screen and tab back and forth, that is one of the positives and if you rotate the phone makes book and reading awesome. You get a versatile phone. I can't wait to see Apples Ultra and hopefully they have good user experiences

I can barely use 3 apps on my M5 11” iPad Pro bc the screen is too small. Not sure what Apple can do with a smaller screen size on the foldable. On paper it sounds good, but <8” is just way to small for any productivity apps for my use cases.

My TriFold opens up to 10 inches so 3 apps (or more) is quite comfortable. The experience was still great though back when I had the 7.6" screen of my Fold 4/5/6 because whether two apps on the cover screen, or three apps on the inner screen, each window is still larger (and way higher resolution) than early iPhones.
Of course it depends on what apps you're using, but for messaging, social, email, or streaming, the three-app layout is more than sufficient for me.
