Um, I saw it mentioned in this thread, so I have to ask: Why does anyone buy the stock iPhone headphones when they are going bad? You have a 1 year warranty (or had one if you bought June 29th), USE IT! I've gotten Apple to send me new headphones at least 12 times since I got my iPhone, all the while sending my old ones back to them. Seriously, wtf people?

I didn't know that Apple covered the headphones that came with it until after I sorta adulterated them and made the hybrid of those and the Apple in-ear headphones....

But when my shiny new 3G iPhone comes, I'll know now :D

Well you must be talking to me, since I'm the only one who technically said he bought new stock iPhone headphones. But you must have missed my last post too, when I said the headphones weren't technically broken. Or do you get yours replaced even if they just look bad, like mine? And if so, how? Do you have to send yours in before getting the new ones? I don't want to be without mine for even one day...

When I had mine replaced because the right ear produced distorted sound, I just filled in an online form, and a couple of days later new ones arrived. You keep the broken ones too. Apple are good with warranty etc. I was really happy with the service.

Yea dude. It's a standard sheet. Just fill it in, saying you are getting garbled noise from one earphone, and they'll send you new ones in like 1 day flat. Then, you put your old ones in that same packet and send it back to them. It's painless. Google "iPod depot' and thats the page you use to fill out the stuff.

That's good to know -- but do you keep the old headphones or not? Conflicting reports here. ;)

Also - don't know how I feel about sending back new headphones that aren't "technically" broken, but just look terrible. I don't want Apple to think I'm screwing them unfairly, and then they don't help me later when I REALLY need something broken replaced... :p

Yes, you keep your old ones. In my case, they didn't ask about them at all. I just had to explain the default in an online form. I did this twice too, as it happened to both sets of headphones. No issues whatsoever.

FYI - I just went to Apple's online form right now and filled out all the info required to get new headphones under warranty. However -- and I don't know if this is new since Petoz did this -- they specifically require that you return your old headphones, and that you enter your credit card information just in case you don't.

Important: You must return your defective part to Apple. When you receive your replacement part, please check your box or envelope for return shipping instructions. If you do not return the defective part, we will charge a non-return penalty to your credit card.

Followed by a box you must click that reads:

Yes, I agree to pay $ 29.00 if I do not return my defective part within 10 business days.

So returning IS required, if you don't want to be charged.
Here's hoping they look at my headphones and consider them defective enough not to charge me!
