Like I said, they are simple devices but they can fail. If they are problematic then they need changing out - sad but true. Not a difficult job if you know what you are doing.

I've had a similar issue with my 3G. I accidentally tossed my phone out the window, onto the road while pointing out directions. The LCD cracked and the home button required a bit of force to work.

I eventually got the screen replaced (3rd party) after about 5-6 months of putting up with it. The guy went and cleaned up some lint and dirt from around the home button and ever since it's been working nearly normal. It just requires, I'd say, roughly twice the force a perfectly functioning iPhone needs.

home button won't work. was fine until i had my screen fixed.

Faulty home buttons are also being reported in Italy. Corriere della Sera newspaper has just posted an article regarding a few customers returning their iphone 3G because of this. Really hope it's an isolated issue or a temporary software responsiveness issue.

now apple won't touch it, beacuse i switched to tmobile. any ideas???
i have to press the home button so hard and several times before it works!!

My 3GS is less responsive than my 1st Gen iPod touch was. Its kinda more ... spongy than the touch, it prefers a square or a more deliberate push. I took it as a design alteration, doesnt really bother me.

Iphone home button problem, I think it works.

I have the very same problem as you all here, I've had my iPhone for over a year working just fine, but recently past couple weeks the home button started to give me problems, had to push too hard in order to work. I've been taking my iPhone to the gym using an arm band and I notice sometimes it ends wet from sweat, and problably moist too as I live and work near the beach. To make the story short, one guy post on this forum a tip which it worked well for me too, which is taking the sim card out, and cleaning the out put jacket for the headphones and the charger/sync connector with pressured air (which was east for me as I work at a dive shop, so I used one the tanks full of compressed air) ;-) and so far is working as new... Give it a try, I really don't think is software issues, good luck!

My home button has the opposite option, its like its down too tight, and it doesnt feel like it clicks in far enough, so I hit it again, always brining me to the camera by mistake (double tap home button option)

My button is mushy and does not have a satisfying click, but atleast its not loose or unresponsive, its too responsive (thinking ive double tapped it)

update

I was able to buy the part which has the home button (Apple iPhone 2G Data Connector Charger Port With Flex Cable Ribbon, sold e.g. here.
The website I bought it from did not warn me that it requires soldering to the the speaker and the microphone. I will try my luck now...

My First Entry in a Forum !
I am mainly a good Fixit Person - Also a Mechanical Engineer.
I have a 2004 Apple PowerBook G4 12", and I bought an iPhone 3GS on 9/23/09.
I LOVE my iPhone ! I operated it for this past month, and my first thought was, Uh Oh ! - The Home Button is used so often ! - I hope Apple made it better than all those lousy buttons on TV Remotes !
My Home Button HB works just fine, but for kicks, I thought I would Google for problems.
I found many different problems and repairs ...

Opened up my phone and the exact same pin was broken off!
If many of the phones are having this exact same problem , how do we get Apple to acknowledge the problem and replace/ repair it after the 1 year warranty? any ideas?
also check that thread for jjsmith's post about getting to the home page rather easily even without a home button.

There seem to be several different similar problems discussed here. I have a fairly new 3Gs and recently the home button started to give me problems, my phone sorta freezes or nothing happens after pressing the Home button. I tried the solution posted earlier - clean out the charger/sync connector with pressured air. So far it is working like new. I'd say that this is an easy first step. Good luck!

iphone button not working

I fix mine by blowing air into the port you plug the charger into and this fix it.

I need some iphone home button help

So I think I've thought of everything that could possibly make my home button stop working on my iphone 3g without a warranty. I don't know much but I thought ok, software or hardware? So I restored my iphone and it upgraded to 3.1.3 the new one that's out. Long story short after a few tries nothing worked. Now recently it had been crappin out on me every once in a while and I would reboot it and it usually started working. That's why I thought it was software. But nothing works. I've even tried to jailbreak it so I can get one of those home button alternate apps off Cydia but I can't because first I had to get back on 3.1.2 because there's no 3.1.3 jailbreak yet and even if there was I have no 3G coverage bc I live in bumf#$k pembroke, nc and the nearest At&T 3G spot is maybe fayetteville nc like 45 minutes away. So without that I can't upload Cydia on my iphone and I can't get wifi bc for some reason that aint showing up either. Even though I HAVE a wifi adress, it won't even show up on my available networks. SO no jailbreak for temp. ihome button which sucks bc I could live with that.

SO now on to hardware. I've opened it up. I've had just a little experience with swictching ipod hardware like harddrives and stuff so I felt like I could probably open it up and see if I could clean any connects up or anything. SO I looked it up and figured out how to open it, opened it and cleaned up with a toothbrush and tried not to break anything and put it back together fine just to reboot and it still not work.

I need help. Please. All I can do is text and call ppl that i've texted. If I want to get back to the home screen I need to reboot and that sucks bc I can't do crap. EVER. I'm in desperate need of some solution that my dumbass hasn't seen. Please pLease please and thanks email me if You'd like bc it'll be easier to get it than checking this post all the time.

Gracias mi amigos

MacResq

The probelm with our iTouch was a physical one. A little hunting around and I found a place that'll fix it for $50--MacResq. Beats $150 at the Apple store!

iphone home button not working!

Ive had my 3g iphone for about a year and a half. The other day I was working outdoors all day in a rain storm with full rain gear on. had my iphone in my pants pocket all day... didn't get wet, but I guess all the humidity got to it... next morning I tried the home button and it would not do anything! Only way to navigate from application to application was to turn the phone off and back on... I found this forum and read various fixes... I tried the easiest one first that several people recommended...
and guess what! IT WORKED!

BLOW INTO THE CHARGING PORT FOR A SECOND AND VIOLA! IT WORKS! Haven't had a problem since! The button works fine now!

I would recommend this first!

Home button completely not working

I too have the same problem with my iPhone, i bought it off a friend with the button totally not working, i have found a way round it but it really decreases my battery life, I have tried pressing it in different places and hitting it, and nothing has happened, it has got a crack near where the charger port is, but that works,

Any suggestions, thanks,

send me an email at ha_crespin11@hotmail.co.uk

I have the same problem. It's unresponsive and sometimes when I push it once, my speed dial comes up (I have that set for double press). I did a full system restore so I don't think it's software releated. I think I'm going to take it to the Apple store because this isn't working like it used to and my wifes doesn't act this way.

Hi, i know your post was a really long time back but i'm having this exact problem with my iphone 3G and regardless of whether i upgrade to the iPhone4 i want to have the home button problem fixed. I am absolutely sure this is not software related since i've restored to factory settings many times. I think my home button just needs to be cleaned from the inside but i'm not sure. How did u manage to resolve this problem?

solution to cause of most of these problems

Hi, i know your post was a really long time back but i'm having this exact problem with my iphone 3G and regardless of whether i upgrade to the iPhone4 i want to have the home button problem fixed. I was searching for an answer to this problem and decided to just "explore" inside to try and find the solution. I work for an eBay company refurbishing and repairing phones. The process is pretty simple and only requires the screen to be lifted up and a mere 3 more screws beyond that. It is hard to explain or post a video of because I cannot do so on my work's dime and do not own an iPhone. It involves making sure the two small gold contacts from the Home button on the LCD assembly touch the 2 small gold pads on the lower black section that is visible when the screen is removed. If you are in the Orlando, FL area I would be glad to show you how and work with you to create a video. Apple would say this would void the warranty, but honestly they would never be able to know you opened the phone. I have done this successfully on 3 out of 3 iPhone 3G's so far. Please email me at igcomputerservices@gmail.com if you would like the help. If you can figure it out on your own from the info I have posted then awesome! =) Good luck!

If you havent found a solution to this...

Its because there is no straightforward easily solution. Unless it's doing this right out of the box, then its just because LIKE EVERY PRODUCT its wearing and tearing. Many people who are having this issue mostly have a screen crack or something else wrong with it.

If you replace the screen and digitizer all at once, whether it be third party repair or not, you get a new homebotton and everything is fixed.

There are many people who can do it in about 15 minutes and for less then 100 us dollars.

Is there a way around the menu button?

My home button doesnt work either but its out of warranty so is there a way to install an app that can help me go around the menu button? I understand jailbreaking can do something to that affect but I just dont think I am that tech savy. thanks for your help:confused::)

I had this problem with my iphone 3G
i figured it was a problem with a build up of dust so some quick sharps blows of air through the cable dock at the bottom seemed to fix the problem
i often do this to fix reception problems as well

Issue fixed thanks to jtchance217

Thank You soooo much jtchance217!!! Had all the same issues as you did and doing what you (slammed the lower part of the phone lightly but firmly (did it against a corner of a sofa)) did fixed my phone!!!!!:):):):):):):):):):):):)
