i think the Apple route is the best

the best way i've broken it down in my head was:

Apple:

$199 one-time fee for replacement

3rd party:

$xx.xx/month, but if your phone doesn't break, they still have your money.


at least with Apple, if your phone doesn't break, you're not out any money.

Someone posted a very detailed and realistic way of how squaretrade handles claims the other day, and the gist of it was they will do everything they can first to fix your phone before they replace or cut you such a large check.

of course.. that's like dealing with ANY insurance company.

no insurance company wants to give out money, they will always look for alternatives.

for example: car insurance.
