So, theoretically a manufacturer could simply buy the platform and pop it into a device for an instant iPhone killer.
This will never be understood. There is no such thing as an instant iPhone killer.

Moto betting all on 'ultimate' phone?
Motorola is placing nearly all its faith in a high-technology phone whose success or failure may determine the outcome of the company, according to a tip sent to BGR. The unnamed device (likely a future ZINE model) would have a previously hinted-at 8-megapixel camera but should also have true GPS and other features meant to draw attention in the crowded high-end field. It will also be one of the first devices to ship with NVIDIA's Tegra APX 2500 processor and should be fast enough to produce advanced 3D as well as HD-resolution video, according to the claims.

The phone has long been rumored to incorporate a touchscreen, though this is no longer certain; the operating system is also unconfirmed but may be a variant of the UIQ interface found on the Z10 and virtually all Sony Ericsson phones.

A release date is unclear for the phone but is tentatively set for October and will be watched very closely, the claimed leak suggests. The launch will be considered a "last stand" for the mobile phone division at Motorola and could see the branch sold to outsiders entirely, letting the American telecoms company focus on mobile broadband, DVRs, and other more profitable businesses.

The company has seen steadily worsening losses and accompanying steep drops in marketshare within the past two years as customers either flock to high-end media phones, such as the iPhone, or else to less expensive devices that accomplish the same tasks as the RAZR series once did. More users switched from RAZRs to iPhones than from any other individual phone model.

So there is potential for it coming in a couple of months. Motorola really needs to pull something out of the bag to keep in any way competitive.

But quite why the CEO is trying to sell against rather than to Apple is something that will have to be explained -
"Nvidia has traditionally specialized in graphics technology, most famously with its GeForce graphics chips which are used in everything from budget PCs to gaming systems. Apple itself makes a GeForce 8800 GS an option in high-end iMac configurations."

(And also in teh

Huang says he expects Tegra to sell to "anyone who wants an alternative like the iPhone," including PC companies such as Dell. The MID concept has been heavily promoted by CPU maker Intel, which builds its own competing chips, such as the Atom. In recent months the two companies have increasingly drifted farther apart, partly due to Intel's dismissal of the concept of separate graphics processors.

NVidia really wants to have the GPU separate ,for obvious reasons, and wants a slice of the smartphone and MID market.
The Tegra is itself an all-in-one, integrated SoC, with the 800MHz ARM CPU, GeForce GPU, and other bits and bobs already mentioned, packed into a coin sized package -
"The chipset is 1/10th the size of Intel's Atom and is ultra-low power. A single charge can allow the user to run audio for 130 hours or HD video for up to 30 hours."

Seeing as Intel hasn't shown if it's accelerated it's Atom schedule, this might be a fly in Intel's ointment as it's taking on the low power end of Atom, in which Intel still needs a lot of work on.

Quoting from here -
2 varieties to start, Tegra 600 & Tegra 650.
"Both chips can run games like Quake 3 with full filters and anti-aliasing at rates of more than 40 FPS"
Which is admittedly going to give the a run for it's money.

"Products will be built atop Windows CE or Windows Mobile, though the company isn't ruling out other operating systems, like Android."

"The chipmaker expects to see media players, MIDs, and GPS units using the chipset by the end of 2008, with ODM smartphones in Q1 2009."

Excellent reply. Again, this is good for the market and keeps the bar up. Good for Nvidia. I hope Apple is taking note that the next iPhone better keep up or people will be jumping ship. As I mentioned before... hardly ten years away.

Nvidia wants to bring the fight by early 2009. From the stuff i've been looking up about Snow Leopard, and Intel's vs Nvidia, AMD, ATi, etc - graphics and CPU are going to have an almighty dog fight very soon. Haven't really totally groked it yet, but the thread is up on the Mac OS X forum if you're curious.
