The best part about the new SMS tones that Apple is releasing in 4.2 is that each one of them sounds like absolute garbage. So happy I jailbroke and put in professional (and louder) e-mail and SMS tones.

Teenagers text. Business people e-mail.

Professionals keep their phones on vibrate.

Instead of ring/text tones, how about vibrate patterns?

I could not disagree with you more on the "Business people e-mail" remark. Literally every single person I know that works in business texts on a regular bases. Yes, they e-mail fellow co-workers, but they also text. I'm just gonna assume that you were assuming this.

My boss doesn't even know how to send texts on her BB, but she sends e-mails all day long.

I wonder why Apple gives so much importance to text tones?

Don't they know people e-mail these days?

Why can't you assign a different EMAIL tone for your contacts? You can do that with one of those free blackberry curves they give you when you sign up for a contract.

Email is so early-to-mid 00's. We need unique Facebook Friend tones

You actually missed my point entirely. The general argument above is that one group emails and the other texts. I argue any professional would have their phone on vibrate.

My daughter sent 1089 texts last month, I imagine she'll find it quite useful

I don't have custom text tones on my 3GS running the 4.2 GM. Hmmm. Not like I would have used them, most likely, but just an observation.

My teenager sent 3000 texts last month. Do businessmen send 3000 emails per month? I admit, I don't know. I'm going to assume that's about right. There are more teenagers than businessmen.

Wow, this thread went way out of line.
We can disagree without acting childish and calling eachother names.
I think the more customization options Apple gives to the user the better.
Sure some might use texts more while others emails but at least give the user the option to change things without having to JB. It shouldnt be that hard, and instead of adding more text tones just let us create our own like they did with ringtones and have the option to select email alerts.
This whole argument about kids text and "professionals" Email is silly. Everyone uses their phone different, it would just be nice to have more options thats all.
Thats why I JB, I can change anything I want without waiting for Apple to decide what I need or want and when I will get it:)

i don't see why assigning different tones to different contacts is a huge deal.

are you really gonna react to a msg coming from 1 contact than the other?

Yes, actually that is exactly what happens for me when I assign custom tones to different people. As I've said in a variety of contexts, just because you may not use a particular feature doesn't negate its importance to others. And lets be real here- this is a feature that has been available on cell phones for YEARS. No reason why it shouldn't be available as an option on the iPhone.

ya i understand, but you still didn't answer the question

why are you going to react differently to other people?

well for me personally, i'll set my best mates and family to their own sms tones and the rest will get the bog standard, so therefore if it's someone important, i'll reply straight away, if i hear a the standard tone, i won't rush to read or reply. plus if my phone is the other side of the room, nice to know who is texting when i can't see the phone.. :)

but not everyone is the same, so you probably will say it's pointless still

Because I work with private clients every day. I assign them various tones depending upon what I am doing for them. Some things are urgent. Some things are not.
I am in meetings a lot during the day. Sometimes, I will get messages from people and what they need from me is time critical. But if I'm in a meeting with someone else, it's great to get a tone that tells me I have something urgent to deal with as opposed to a message from a client that isn't an urgent issue, or a family member, or a friend...Make sense?

Hey make sure everyone explains to acfusion why you need and would like that feature on your phone. Maybe he will approve it's use for the next firmware update. :D

Thanks for this! Honestly, I thought the exact same thing, but decided to give a serious answer in the remote hope that there would be penetration through thick cranial matter!:D

Likewise: because you use a feature does not mean everyone else does too or should use it as well. Everybody uses their iPhone differently but there are similarities. A lot of people in this thread are overreacting and I must say quite a lot are the stereotypical American: they have no knowledge whatsoever about other countries besides the USA. They're flat out wrong: the rest of the world is bigger than the USA. Apple has to satisfy an awful lot of users so they'll be looking at similarities worldwide. Somehow people seem to be forgetting this very important fact.

Other phones have had quite a lot of features the iPhone didn't or still doesn't have (configuring the blips and bleeps, bluetooth profiles, etc.). That's the way it is with the iPhone. After 4 years you'd think people would know this by now. It's not other users you have to convince, it's Apple, after all it's their OS. Quite a pointless discussion about the blips and bleeps if you ask me.

Yes, I'd like to set my own blips and bleeps for sms, calendar and mail, not just my ringtone. However, it's not in iOS 4.2 (nor in any previous version) which this thread is about...

Ontopic: I've seen reports about iOS 4.2 fixing the proximity issue and making the iPhone 3G faster. Those are even better than extra sms tones!

What dosn't work

Just found out double tapping the arrow in txt doesn't automatically turn on cap lock. Bummer for those of us that like to shout!!!!
