Apple locked in the SMS tones so that when someone gets a text, everyone knows it's an iPhone. Sort of like a viral advertising thing. That and yet another example of 100% control.

It's so ***** idiotic that Steve controls it down to that granular of a level.

Reminds me of how everyone can recognize the T-Mobile/Nokia jingle.

What I find to be unbelievable is how I can't take a photo from within a new email message to attach a photo like I can in the SMS/MMS window. I have to start with a photo in my camera roll to attach a photo to my email message? Nuts.

Likewise: because you use a feature does not mean everyone else does too or should use it as well. Everybody uses their iPhone differently but there are similarities. A lot of people in this thread are overreacting and I must say quite a lot are the stereotypical American: they have no knowledge whatsoever about other countries besides the USA. They're flat out wrong: the rest of the world is bigger than the USA. Apple has to satisfy an awful lot of users so they'll be looking at similarities worldwide. Somehow people seem to be forgetting this very important fact.

Other phones have had quite a lot of features the iPhone didn't or still doesn't have (configuring the blips and bleeps, bluetooth profiles, etc.). That's the way it is with the iPhone. After 4 years you'd think people would know this by now. It's not other users you have to convince, it's Apple, after all it's their OS. Quite a pointless discussion about the blips and bleeps if you ask me.

Yes, I'd like to set my own blips and bleeps for sms, calendar and mail, not just my ringtone. However, it's not in iOS 4.2 (nor in any previous version) which this thread is about...

Ontopic: I've seen reports about iOS 4.2 fixing the proximity issue and making the iPhone 3G faster. Those are even better than extra sms tones!

And, praytell, what does YOUR post have to do with the features in 4.2? Most of it is a rant stereotyping Americans...
And, in case you want to know what the connection is between sms tones and 4.2, there were earlier reports that 4.2 contained additional sms tones that could be assigned to contacts on an individual basis. AND there were some early reports that indicated that there appeared to be some placeholders for possible custom made tones.
No one is FORCING you to use custom tones should they be offered. Feel free to keep your phone set up using the default tone.
"A lot of people in this thread are overreacting." You might want to look in the mirror...

I thought you could copy and paste pics to emails too.

Same diff. Archaic.

The way it needs to be done is the same as it's done in the MMS window. You can take a photo or choose from the camera roll at the same time you're composing the MMS. The way it is now is very unintuitive. Very "un-apple-like".

Because I work with private clients every day. I assign them various tones depending upon what I am doing for them. Some things are urgent. Some things are not.
I am in meetings a lot during the day. Sometimes, I will get messages from people and what they need from me is time critical. But if I'm in a meeting with someone else, it's great to get a tone that tells me I have something urgent to deal with as opposed to a message from a client that isn't an urgent issue, or a family member, or a friend...Make sense?

ya it makes sense but it also doesn't at the same time.

oh you sound very professional with all your meetings so perhaps you can enlighten me here... i don't know what kind of meetings you go to, but aren't you usually required to put your phone on silent? it's actually very rude that your phone goes off in the middle of a meeting.

i deal with a lot of people during the day too. i treat every alert equally. wanna know why? well, i guess i could assign an alert for my family, friends etc. however, if a family member sends me a text and i think it's urgent, i go out of my way only to read "hey what time will you be home" -- that's not important or urgent at all.

whatever helps you sleep at night though.

Hey make sure everyone explains to acfusion why you need and would like that feature on your phone. Maybe he will approve it's use for the next firmware update. :D

you're hilarious. do you do stand up comedy?

i was just asking how someone would use this feature, trying to see if i could take advantage of it because it didn't make sense, and it still doesn't (with the examples that were given)

wow, so you have no need for it, who cares. there are others who have uses for it. am sure there are other things on the iPhone you don't use, there are things that you probably use that others don't. so what? people here have shown how they make use of this feature as you requested, and you still moan...

ok for the ****in 10th time, i understand that. do you have comprehension issues?

I see the iPad got a brightness bar in the iPod control dock but this is not in the phone. Would have loved this as I keep the brightness quite low and have to always crank it up to watch video.

Just start you email, jump over to pictures, copy a pic, then go back to your email, and paste it in. works great....

I'm guessing no more updates till iOS 5 then, given that we topped out at 3.1.3 (3.2.2 if you count iPad) in the previous generation?

noob question..how did you guys get the 4.2 update? mine is still stuck with 4.1 and when i connect to iTunes it says it's updated.isn't 4.2 update going to be later this month? so how did you guys manage to have the print button in your iPhones? lol

Developers are given early access to the next versions of iOS/OS X via separate channels in the form of betas and GMs, so they can test their application's compatibility with the impending update.
