I suspect they'll require a digital signature, which will be free if your app goes on iTunes but cost something (probably $50-$100) if you don't add it to the iTunes Store.

Naaa... You will probably have to apply to get (or buy) a digital cert from apple. There's no way that apple is going to review and verify every application.

I would have no problem paying $5-$10 for a decent iPhone app. The first one I'll be looking for is some sort of Task management..since Apple doesn't seem to think we need that.

I never said they should NOT be free. I was arguing it was ridiculous for people to demand they be free or bitch if they are not free.

NeoOffice btw if you want free office. It's funny when people pay for Office when something better is out for free.

Is NeoOffice the best free office alternative for Mac...in your opinion?

The fear for me is that Apple will only permit apps they've reviewed and placed in the iTunes store themselves, allowing them to control pricing (meaning, despite whatever the developer wishes, Apple will charge *something*), but more worryingly, deny access to any app that solves a problem they don't want solved. Like let's say AT&T doesn't want a chat client available because they don't want people using that rather than texting.. Apple just says, "sorry, we won't allow it on iTunes" and that's that, no app. That sort of thing.

Reminds me of BREW

I wrote a program, can i run it on my verizon wireless mobile phone? Sure if you pay qualcomm 4000$ to get it signed and pay verizon to let you install it on your phone.

Why should Apple give something away for free:confused:
When everybody will pay for the software....

Can't wait!!! - And it's good news for AAPL too:D

Apple would be making a mistake if the SDK is not opened up to the open source community. This is what we mean by FREE. Some developers actually believe in open source. Nothing wrong with that. Maybe I want Thunderbird or Firefox on my iPhone.

It does everything I have ever needed to do in Office with all the same functionality and it will save and read files from before Office 97. I'm always open to suggestions if someone knows of a better one.

With all of the talk of software, there is another major aspect to the "software" developers kit: HARDWARE, specifically non audio-out hardware, more the type of hardware that only will work for the touch and iphone.

While many 3rd party applications have already been written for jailbroken iphones/ipods, they are somewhat limited due to the fact that they're not Apple sanctioned. Hardware is even more at a loss, because few companies are going to invest in making a product that could be made useless at any moment and attacks Apple's 3rd party positions.

However, being able to write 3rd party apps could open up this arena. Hardware, and the software to run in with the SDK, could bring powerful new options to the iphone/ipod touch.

Personally, I'd like to see a portable keyboard so that taking notes on the ipod/iphone is as easy as on a laptop, just far more portable. I'm not going to go into the endless hardware options out there (feel free to post more on that below), but we all know they're out there.

So, lets hope for that the SDK allows for a product we KNOW won't be for free, hardware.

Mine too. I highly highly doubt they're going to allow full access to everything.

It would be amazing if they did though, but I doubt it.

Skype?
iChat?
Different Music App?
Streaming Music App?
Competiting Music Store App?

There's no way they'd allow these.

The SDK will not give you access to EDGE. Wifi only.

People that think apps like a Slingplayer will only be a couple bucks (or free) have to be crazy. The other mobile versions of Slingplayer are $20-30 dollars, why would the iPhone one be any different? Any serious application will cost money, no doubt about it.

And I would pay for a good app. But I would not pay for an app that accessed the internet unless it also allowed access over EDGE. For instance, a streaming audio app.

I would pay for some apps, but I hoep some are free. Some of those apps offered for Jailbroken phones that basically do nothing (pair of 'boobs' shaking, snow across the screen like a xmas globe, etc) are not worth even $1. I'd pay up to $5 for a good app, maybe $10 if I needed for a Slingplayer.

That's kinda what the sdk is for. There won't be any more of those pointless apps.

I couldn't agree more. I'd like to see a barcode reader. Imagine the retail possibilities.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A102 Safari/419.3)

Cool. I can't wait until we see some nice apps.

Clues in Invitation?

I mean the first two are pretty obvious...Enterprise and SDK. The last one looks like it could be a clue of another software update on the 6th. Maybe they will include new apps??

We will also probably see iTunes 8.

I think they wont charge anything is the app is free. Look at itunes there are a lot of content that is free. I think that the worry should be in the fact that they might not allow chat clients.

Why would you want a large, power consuming x86 CPU inside the iPhone? <snip> It's got to the point where I think that people still crowing for crippled x86 CPUs in their iPhone are a bit bonkers. Now if you had said something about a larger form factor, maybe a tablet ...

As Hattig says, Intel might get it down to maybe 0.5W by the end of the year. If they're lucky. Silverthorne is slated for 2009, and a Tablet or above at that. Though there are Silverthorne Apple products coming out this year ;)

Yeah... All the sales people in the Apple stores could use them to ring up sales and print (optional) to a BT printer.

1) barcode read items
2) capture contact info from customer's iP/T, if available
3) auth CC if necessary
4) input customer signature via touchscreen
5) email or print receipt

Crap...

Pages of responses are coming in at 2x the rate I can read the prior messages.

This one announcement may just choke the internet !
