Mmmm.... what am I missing? I just did a conversion using Yahoo Finance.

Euro 269 = US$ 373.399

Apple Store US iPhone: US$ 399

The UK iPhone, including VAT is US$ 25 less than in the US before sales tax of around $32.... it cost you $57 less than in the US.

The EURO is what you missed.. its GBP 269, Euro amount hasn't been announced yet

Unlock UK iphone?

I see that the iphone will be sold in Apple Stores in the UK. Would it not be possible to purchase one like this and then unlock it, and do away with commiting to an O2 contract?

I believe steve announced the iPhone with £269 not 269 euro...

For me, iPhone itself is fantastic. Just wish I can have a PAYG option.
Well... probably I will unlock it when I get it.
Can't wait!!!

Remarkable.

For a Mac rumours site, there are certainly some grossly uninformed and miserable 'UK Apple fans ' here.

If you havent USED the iPhone, dont say squat until you actually know of what you talk.
The iPhone works rather well on EDGE, and as you have been told a thousand times before, '3G' isnt really very widespread anywhere and battery life is crap.

EDGE is from 2 to 10 times faster than dialup, and in reality, Broadband in the UK, is, oddly enough, REAL useage, about, er...2 to 10 times faster than dial-up.

Its not about some fantasy '3G' hyper-speed nonsense, its about the EXPERIENCE of being able to do so much, so beautifully and so QUICKLY on the most amazing piece of tech EVER made.

Try it, oh negativos, and lets see what you have to say then.

Yes, I have two of them, unlocked by AnySim in Canada, where the data plans are so expensive that its impossible. STILL the iphone, without EDGE, or any data plan, is better than ANYTHING else out there.

Comparing the iPhone to the Nokia N95 is very funny - when you USE an iPhone, you will sell your N95.....

The only bad thing about iPhone is the name - this is NOT to be compared to 'phones' - this is a completely new device.
You'll see.....

In the UK we use pounds not euros, convert 269 UK pounds into dollars you get 537 dollars.

Due to what I had heard from people in the industry, I posted back in April, the phone would be around £300 - I was pleased to see that minimum cost per month suggested to me was a good deal less accurate than what I had been told about the cost of the phone.

Personally, I've got no idea how well the iPhone will do over here - but the people I know in the industry reckon it's going to do well and I'll see if I can get any info re: early interest.

Umm, yea. For better of worse, the UK uses pounds, not Euros. Thus:

UK£ 269 = 542.2502 U.S. dollars. Therefore it's about US$540 for an iPhone with value added tax.

In the US, the phone is $399 plus $25-$35 depending on the state. So we'll say about $430 in the States, versus $542 for the UK.

In the Eurozone however, it's supposed to go for €399, which sucks because:

€ 399 = 553.4529 U.S. dollars. Thus another $10 in the Eurozone.

I like O2, I've been with them before and had no problem, I moved to 3 because they were cheaper. the £35 tariff is rubbish but for £45 you can get a lot more. Apple and O2 are probably having a laugh at my expense but, I've been waiting since Jan to get my hands on one, and I'm getting one on the 9th Nov, infact I've just booked the day off work!

Yes, so long as the unlocks keep up with Apple's firmware and software updates.

I just bought an iPhone off eBay for £275 total and plan to unlock it. I'm confident the unlock team will be able to keep up, though I may have to wait a couple of weeks to do so. Not a big deal to me so long as the thing can play music on the tube and can make phone calls. I'm going to go with T Mobile pay as you go, since it's only 12p to anyone anytime, and they charge a maximum of £1 a day for unlimited internet (well up to 1GB a month). T-Mobile in London is said to have EDGE, and if not it will still work, albeit lower in GPRS. However based on my current usage of email/web on my current phone I don't believe this will become an issue for me. I'm a light phone user and rarely top-up more than £10 a month except when I go to the continent. I love the idea of replacing two things in my pocket with one!

I figured this was a good deal since it was only marginally more than I'd pay at the Apple Store and I'm getting it very early. I don't understand the 6 week delay as we know the damn phones are ready? o well.

The most boring Apple event ever, just a price plan, who carries and launch date. Very dull.

Actually most of the Apple press events in the UK are very much along these lines, so I don't quite know what you would be expecting. Normally, it's a shortish, low-key presentation, followed by the chance to chat with the execs - usually the pastries on offer are the best thing.

Although I would have no use for an iPhone, I still use a Nokia 3310 :eek:I think it's a fantastic product and at 269 pounds thats not a bad price I was expecting much higher.

Well I was kinda expecting some news on TV and movies on iTunes UK but I admit that was only a hope and not likely.

I went into Birmingham on my lunch break to get an iPod Touch (I can't wait until November!) and there were plenty of people stood around the tills nagging about the iPhone - 'When? Where?' etc.

Bagged myself an 8gb and 16gb Touch (one for the partner!). They are sooooo thin.

RE: The announcement earlier. Exactly what I expected - and whilst the £35 plan might seem a big much for only 200 minutes, the £45 isn't bad at all when you consider what you're getting. Around Birmingham and Nottingham (where I am mainly) there are plenty of Cloud hotspots - which makes the inclusion of that a huge bonus. Roll on November 9th, I can't wait.

No, the whiniest thread was those americans who misunderstand the cell phone market and think their iPhones should retain their value, and that Apple have no right to drop the price.

Wow, this is the whiniest thread I have seen in my entire life.

As for me, I'll be staying with the Nokia N95 8GB which quite frankly blows the iPhone out of the water feature-wise.

ER, NO it really doesnt do anything of the kind.

That kind of comment, from someone who hasnt USED an iPhone, is just silly.
Typically 'dog in the manger' British negativity. Who needs it?

Remarkable.

Comparing the iPhone to the Nokia N95 is very funny - when you USE an iPhone, you will sell your N95.....

As I said in my last post, embedded OS X and multitouch are fantastic and are the future for sure. Everything else about the iPhone is sub-par - there's no getting away from it.

No, the N95 hasn't got the user experience of the iPhone (although it's well thought-out) but it's a far better overall tool if you want a swiss-army knife phone. Oh, and it's free/almost free with countless £30-35 unlimited data contracts.

Unless you had no wish for 80% of the N95's features you WOULD miss it if you got an iPhone instead.

No, the iPhone should be, and is comparable to other phones.

Its a cell phone, and therefore can be compared - its not apple and oranges. The iPhone is a cell phone with a pretty UI on top. Period.

Some Apple customers really like to believe their and their products are so special and that makes them different from any thing else on the planet. Utter rubbish;.

It may be unbelievable to some people, but the iPhone isn't for everyone - it isn't a silver bullet, and some people may prefer their n95 ( not limited to ) over an iPhone... maybe the features on their n95 ( or whatever device they have ) they can't live without, such as radio, or GPS, or 3rd party applications etc.

The only bad thing about iPhone is the name - this is NOT to be compared to 'phones' - this is a completely new device.

And oh what the hell are you talking about? 8-meg is the standard now. Even if you only get five or six megs on your line, that's still WAY more than "2 to 10" times faster than dial up!

Stop glossing the issue. 3G has been the mobile standard in large cities across Europe for several years now. Fabricate it as much as you like. WiFi is faster, yes, but few and far between here, unless you spend most of your time in the city, I'm afraid.

I'll be there to get one! Cant wait :)

and if you're not happy with the price or whats being offered, then shut up and don't buy one! No-one is forcing you to, lol

Well I was kinda expecting some news on TV and movies on iTunes UK but I admit that was only a hope and not likely.

Know what you mean - that would have fitted well, but these type of events are very specific in the UK, plus you tend to have a pretty safe idea about what's going to be 'announced', so they're really best as a way of networking rather than finding out anything exciting.

Well I have mixed feelings about this mornings announcement. £269 for the device is fine since it comes with iPod capabilities. The only thing that really bugs me is the tariffs - if they are giving every tariff unlimited data then why should you have to get a iPhone tariff and not just one of the normal ones? My guess is that apple has squeezed so much out of o2 that they cannot afford to give users the full amount of mins / texts. If this is true - boo apple!
