i would have thought the pricing would be cheaper in China for Chinese consumers. ie a more stripped down iphone with no wifi = Cheaper.

hell they are made in china, less transport costs as well and no currency exchange as well.

Funny I would have thought the same.

May be a stupid question...

But is the App Store available in China? Wasn't sure if the govt would allow it.

What a terrible start to what could have been a fantastic launch.

First, there is no Wi-fi. Then the government allows it, which makes the iPhone already out of date, so people will hold off on buying one until the next version.

Second, there are iPhones on the street already that have WiFi and cost less.

People aren't stupid, no matter where they live.

I hope Apple does sell a bunch, but it doesn't look like they will.

What do you expect from a country trying to keep this product from taking over competing products it sanctions?

Personally, the Chinese Government deserves all the bad press on such tactics it can get.

i'd expect apple to just disable the wifi through software rather than physically removing the hardware. this would have made sense since we all know how unbalanced the chinese government is.

Wow, what a disaster, and after all the effort Apple put into launching the iPhone in China. I don't see them selling as much as projected, especially because of the imminent arrival of the wifi-enabled model.

Could someone turn the lazy susan so I can reach the fried rice?

Chineese

The cell phones in China are like light years a head of iphone...

I have heard this before; however I've never heard any examples of what makes them "light years a head [sic]". Typically, any time the topic comes up, it is extended to something like: "Oh yeah! ALL their electronics are waaay better!"

Does anyone have any examples, specifically, but not limited to, cell phone technology superiority?

i think that was the point. Chinese like to promote Chinese products and do what they can to give themselves competitive advantage. It's no cooincidence that the rule was changed after a gimped iPhone was already made.

The cell phones in China are like light years a head of iphone... And maybe Apple will see that people don't wanna be tied down by contracts with sucky service... If I have a great working iphone without a contract then why would I want to go to on a contract being tied down and no WiFi.. AND MORE MONEY?? Yeah.. No thank you... :apple:

I always hear that, but I think it's a bunch of crap. Explain to my how and why China would be privy to devices that are so far and above anything that the rest of the world has. I just don't buy it, sorry.

Like sudo rm -rf / said, either provide examples or the claim is absolutely bogus.

The Chinese government should be required to buy those no-wifi phones (lawsuit, court order), and Chinese politicians should be forced to use the no-wifi phones while the general public gets to use wifi phones. APPLE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO TAKE THE LOSS FOR THE STUPID DECISIONS OF THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT!!!

LOL.

Yeah, that's what should happen.

Apple knew what they were getting themselves into when they decided to pursue the Chinese market.

Well there are no examples because the statement is wrong. Their cell phone selection is about the same as it is in the US and Europe.

Cellphones in Korea and Japan possibly have more capabilities than we do in the west, but not China.

I apologize if you're joking, if not - you're an idiot.

You can't re-enable HARDWARE that isn't there. Just like how my 2001 Toyota can't get "HD Radio" through a software update; you need a physical HD Radio for that.

Who's to say Apple didnt disable the wifi in software only?

Dont be so quick to assume the phone is missing the hardware

I'm guessing you mean the higher pricing?

Was it China Unicom pricing or was it Apple setting the price wanting to recoup some of the lost revenue from pirated iPhones?

Do you mean actually physically stolen phones? Because otherwise Apple got something, somewhere.

You mean like this fine peice of kit?

What if WiFi is re-enabled with a firmware update?
;)

I'm with you.. if Apple was lobbying the Chinese gov to ease up on the WiFi restriction AND they felt it was only a matter of time, the smart move for them would've been to leave all the hardware in place and disable WiFi via a firmware change. This would be a heck of a lot cheaper (and less risky) than removing it from the design already in use globally.

IF there is a parts breakdown of the particular 3gs model being sold by unicom with pics showing no radio then all bets are off. Otherwise maybe not so dumb.

It's also cheaper for Apple to let the end users do the firmware change than incurring the expense of reworking finished goods themselves.

Only time will tell who's the bigger fool.

If you f*uck with Chinese you have 0 chance of doing any business there in the future. Trust me you don't sue there anyone...

Asia has the same crap we do.

Actually thats not true. There are many brands / models that only available in Asia. Asia has very different mobile culture then western countries. Consumers in Asia expect different type of services as well as phone features. Also the design aesthetics are different.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

We also heard the same thing about the Japanese market. The iPhone turned out to be a hit there as well.
