iPhone lock/sleep button ending calls

This is entirely new to me. I always lock my phone during a call. Is this a software issuer related to beta 5?

Are you using an iPhone 4? That is exactly what it does on this phone. I don't remember having that problem with the 3G.

The lock/sleep button only ends calls if I'm not using speakerphone. If I am, the device simply locks.

Any particular reason for locking it when you answer a call? The proximity sensor should shut off the screen so your face doesn't accidentally press anything.
