I've just got an iPhone 12 Mini. It still feels big compared to the SE1 I was using, so wouldn't want anything bigger. I hope I have upgrade options in the future, unlike the none there were between the SE and Mini.

The price and the size are what kept me from ever upgrading my SE1.

The Mini isn't "Mini-enough" for those of us who love the SE1.

I loved my SE1. Sturdy as an ox. No case and dropped many times with nary a scratch. I tried the SE2 but soon gave it to my wife and went Android for the first time. That was two years ago and I am still enjoying my Samsung Galaxy S10e.

It would have been amazing if Apple re-released the original SE1 with a current gen A14 chip, same screen but with True Tone and wide colour, increase the ram to 3GB and camera improved with computational photography at £399. They could easily do this and make a lot of people happy. I would buy one on day 1.

I'm with you. They'll never do it for us, which makes me sad.
I don't need any form factor change or FaceID or any of that.

Literally just spec bump the existing chassis and components.
That's all I want.

Battery capacity might be an issue though, with the same form factor.

Are the newer chips more power hungry?

I would have thought the opposite -- that with newer chips and smaller process sizes they could be squeezing better efficiency out of the same physical amount of space.

I’m pretty sure the newer bionic chips, especially the A14 on its smaller die, would be more battery efficient than the A9, which should theoretically increase the 1624 mh battery life on an updated SE.

I sure hope it live on somehow. Whether it’s an se model that gets released in 2 year from now. It would be very hard for me to go up a size after growing really comfortable with the size of the mini.
I think the mini may indeed end up being repurposed as an SE once the 8 form factor is no longer viable to use. If it really is proving less popular than the other 12 models, that's one way for Apple to avoid the SE cannibalising sales too much!

The newer chips should be more power efficient. But whether it is sufficient to overcome the increase in computation load in the newer iOS and apps is another issue.

My SE has pretty bad battery life even for light usage.

OGSE?

You get a new battery?
When I did that on mine, it was a revelation.

I've had a phenomenal experience and great battery life on iOS 14 with my SE1.
Happy as a clam on that front honestly.

Yup OGSE. It's at 87%. I think my battery also runs through cycles very quickly. A small drop in battery health becomes quite significant because the battery capacity is so small.

I'd go new and see if you are happier - can be very cheap and easy if you are comfy doing it yourself

It made a world of difference for me.

I love the mini. But I use the phone too much so battery life doesn’t work for me. Will I get the 14, heck yeah.

I would gladly give up MagSafe for a thicker battery.
I would gladly give up Magsafe for nothing, a thicker battery would be a bonus. I have a family member with a pacemaker and dementia, so they don’t remember to keep the phone away from their chest. In fact there is a tendency to put a phone nearby when looking at a screen because of bifocal glasses. I dare not use my Mini to show family photos shared on Facebook. Pacemaker, dementia, and bifocals are all age related, and not uncommon as a combination.

I agree. Having a MagSafe battery pack its too thick. Id rather just fast charge using a portable PD charger than a slow MagSafe battery pack. I could give up MagSafe for big battery.

Anyone else not using wireless charging at all?

I did for a while but now have had two iPhones with broken lightning ports after a while. Without warranty this would be a very expensive repair I reckon, wireless charging saves the day.
In the case of my 8+, this option provided additional life to the device for about two years before I finally upgraded.

I have never ever used wireless charging on my 8+, SE2 or 12 mini, I just find it inefficient and just prefer to use mains, but you have made a very good point. Wireless charging would be a lifesaver if ever the lightning port stops working.

Frankly I don’t really see the point of it. It’s not really wireless is when it’s still tethered to the wall. Plus, it’s not that difficult to plug in a lightning cable.

It’s like Apple needed to add another feature to the iPhone 12. And they figure magnets and stainless steel always grabs an Apple users attention.

Of course at the same time generate a ton of revenue with wallets and cases.

Yeah I’m not sure fond of the tech either but it’s a good alternative if needed. This particular 8+ has been through everything from fast to wireless charging randomly and in its fourth year now the battery health reads 86%.

Will Apple ever release a relatively basic iPhone with bells and whistles removed?

  • mini form factor
  • No wireless charging
  • No MagSafe
  • Single-lens camera system
  • Touch ID
  • LCD screen

I hope so. Don't forget, it should also have a decent processor like they did with the SE.

• No 5G (although one can turn it off)

• A14 or higher processor (maybe even A13 would suffice)
